  • Sex Manuals in Malay Manuscripts As Another Transcript of Gender Relations
religions Article Sex Manuals in Malay Manuscripts as Another Transcript of Gender Relations Maznah Mohamad Department of Malay Studies, National University of Singapore, Singapore 119260, Singapore; [email protected] Abstract: This article interprets the narratives of sex manuals produced within the Malay-Indonesian archipelago before the coming of Western colonialism and the dawn of postcolonial Islamic resur- gence. In the collection of Malaysian libraries and museums, these manuscripts are largely classified as Kitab Jimak and Kitab Tib. They are all written in the Malay language with indigenous references, though the contents are likely derived from a common genre of texts transmitted from an early Arab-Islamic world and circulated within the region before the coming of European colonialism. The corpora of sexual knowledge in these texts emphasises the valorisation of sexual pleasure in conjugal relationships. Through an extensive list of prescriptions—from sexual techniques to diet, food taboos, medicine, pharmacopoeia, mantras, charms, and astrological knowledge—a near-sacral sexual expe- rience is aspired. Couples are guided in their attainment of pleasure (nikmat) through the adherence of Islamic ethics (akhlak), rules (hukum), and etiquette (tertib). The fulfilment of women’s desire in the process is central in these observances. Nevertheless, despite placing much emphasis on mutual pleasure, these texts also contain ambiguous and paradoxical pronouncements on the position of women, wavering from veneration to misogyny. The article also highlights how intertextual studies of similar texts throughout the Islamic world can be a new focus of studies on the early history of gender and sexuality in Islam. • The Tribadic Tradition: the Reception of an Ancient Discourse on Female Homosexuality
The Tribadic Tradition: The Reception of an Ancient Discourse on Female Homosexuality Thorsteinn Vilhjalmsson A dissertation submitted to the University of Bristol in accordance with the requirements of the degree of Master of Arts by advanced study in Classical Reception in the Faculty of Arts. School of Humanities, September 2015, 14995 words. Supervisors: Dr. Genevieve Liveley and Prof. Shane Butler. Abstract Near-continually from the 1st to the 19th centuries, the main word used for homosexual women was Greek: tribade. This word marked a discourse on female homosexuality with a defined set of tropes and characterizations, which, far from being “hidden from history”, was in wide use in the ancient world and beyond. Yet it was used only by men and the tropes associated with tribadism were all negative, describing little more than male fantasies; nowhere does a woman refer to herself as a tribade. Yet researching tribadism yields a unique insight into the constraints of women’s sexual lives in antiquity. It reveals, by the transhistorical character of the discourse, the deep anxieties of patriarchal society about women’s sexuality; it exposes the strategies by which that society asserts control over women’s lives, and the weaknesses of those same strategies. In this manner, examining the tribadic tradition gives a powerful insight into the structures of sex and power in antiquity and beyond. This dissertation traces the reception of the discourse of the tribade from antiquity into the Byzantine Middle Ages, starting with an excursus on Plato’s Symposium and its pioneering act of naming homosexual women, then moving onto the birth and flowering of the tribade in Greco-Roman literature from the 1st century on.

Journal of Abbasid Studies 4 (2017) 187-210 brill.com/jas Of Ladies and Lesbians and Books on Women from the Third/Ninth and Fourth/Tenth Centuries Pernilla Myrne University of Gothenburg, Sweden [email protected] Abstract Information about women in Abbasid society — and especially the subgroups of mutaẓarrifāt, ladies, and saḥḥaqāt, lesbians — is gathered from two extant sources that explicitly deal with the subject: al-Muwashshā, “The Painted Cloth,” by al-Washshāʾ (d. 325/936-7) and Jawāmiʿ al-ladhdha, composed some fifty years later by ʿAlī b. Naṣr al-Kātib. The Jawāmiʿ al-ladhdha is an erotic compendium that relies heavily on earlier sources, al-Muwashshā included; however, most of the works cited are lost. A survey of book-titles from the same period indicates that a good many books about women were written at the time. Representations of ladies and lesbians as they appear from the two sources and surveyed lists of book-titles suggest a complex picture of the lady- lesbian that changed over time. That some of the books dealing with the subject were still available some six-hundred years later shows that the erotic lore of the Abbasids continued to arouse interest for centuries. Keywords Abbasid culture – homosexuality – refinement – saḥq – slave-girls – ẓarīf Introduction The late fourth/tenth century erotic compendium Jawāmiʿ al-ladhdha, “Encyclopaedia of Pleasure,” contains several chapters on different types of love and intimate relations.1 A main division is made between heterosexuality 1 The Jawāmiʿ al-ladhdha, written by a certain ʿAlī b. Naṣr al-Kātib toward the end of the fourth/tenth century, is the earliest extant work of the kind.

The result is an extensive investigation of the sexual pleasures permitted for Mus- lims—particularly men, but also, to a certain degree, women. Women’s sexual behavior and obligations are treated by al-Suyūṭī in Shaqāʾiq al-utrunj and Nuzhat al-mutaʾammil, which rely partly on the same sources as Wishāḥ. 5 Al-Suyūṭī draws on an imposing number of earlier sources from different fields of knowledge, especially the hadiths, but also lexicography, historical anecdotes (akhbār), medicine, and erotology. In Wishāḥ and Shaqāʾiq al-utrunj, al-Suyūṭī acts 1 There is an edition ofAl-Wishāḥ by Ṭalʿat Ḥasan ʿAbd al-Qawī (Damascus, 2001).
