IV ABSTRACT (AN)OTHER GENDER: A CROSS-CULTURAL ANALYSIS OF WAR-TORN FRANCE AND GREAT BRITAIN IN WHICHH SIMONE DE BEAUVOIR AND VIRGINIA WOOLF REDEFINE "WOMAN" Anna Stamp July 25,2011 This dissertation is a cross-cultural analysis of France and Great Britain during both the First World War and World War II in which Simone de Beauvoir and Virginia Woolf redefined "woman." Utilizing New Historicism, the first chapter begins with a focus on the evolution of the two cultures from the mid-nineteenth to early twentieth century France and Great Britain and discusses the ways in which the women's movement was both perpetuated and hindered by the volatile political and cultural climates of these two countries. The second chapter discusses the traditional woman as she was viewed in both French and British culture as depicted in the works of Simone de Beauvoir and Virginia Woolf. Specifically, the images of the mother, wife, hostess, and socialite are viewed in order to develop the definition of what a traditional woman was during the first half of the Twentieth Century in Great Britain and France. The third chapter lays the theoretical and philosophical ground work for the argument of An(Other) gender. Existentialism and phenomenology allow for a philosophical validation of this idea. Chapter four utilizes examples from Woolfs fictional works, such as Mrs. Dalloway, and Beauvoir's The Second Sex in order to analyze the definition of the traditional woman. This chapter is not comparing genres but rather re-visiting Woolfs works through the lens of Beauvoir's The Second Sex as she clearly describes the traditional role of women as dictated by patriarchal v domination. Chapter five seeks to explore Woolf and Beauvoir's attempts at (re )defining (an)other gender. Louis Althusser's Ideological State Apparatus (lSA) is used to contemplate the place of "woman" at the time of Woolf and Beauvoir both in the home and as an emerging figure in society. Specifically, the social paradigms were shifting, and the definitions of roles, especially those pertaining to gender, were being revised so as to fit the emergence of the New Woman. However, this emergence did not come without problems. The New Woman in society created great social and political anxieties in a largely patriarchal culture, and at times, this gender struggle began to reflect the battles being fought at the front during the First World War as well as World War Two. A cross-cultural analysis and definition arose out of the state of things in a war-tom world. Traditional gender roles were no longer efficacious or workable. Thus a new definition had to evolve. Virginia WooIrs polemical works A Room of One 's Own (1929) and Three Guineas (1938) question a woman's place in modem society. Woolf's fictional works such as Mrs. Dalloway (1925) and To The Lighthouse (1927) which depict the traditional woman through Clarissa Dalloway and Mrs. Ramsay, and Orlando (1928) in which gender boundaries are destroyed as Orlando lives as both a man and a woman, give insight into how the New Woman was viewed as the gender question was being posed during the first part of the twentieth century. 1 Simone de Beauvoir too in The Second Sex (1949) was working to redefine Woman as she sought to make sense of this new world in which women were entering a public sphere still dominated by patriarchy. Both Woolf and Beauvoir also utilized their personal experiences in their autobiographical writings such as Woolfs Moments of Being and Beauvoir's Memoirs ofa Dutiful Daughter, and each woman reflected upon the question "What did it mean to be a woman?" The balance of power in society shifted as war and industry prompted women to assume nontraditional roles in society, reshaping the world into a viable place for women. With a social upheaval

Althusser and ideological criticism of the arts RICHARD ELDRIDGE Louis Althusser's 1970 essay "Ideology and ideological state appar- atuses"1 is arguably the most influential and important document in contemporary critical practice and its theory. In one way this is puzzling, for the essay contains almost nothing that can be recog- nized as an argument. It does not put forward a causal theory of the rise and fall of forms of social life. It offers no deductions, and it contains only a few sketchily described examples of ideologies. The essay is instead filled with oracular pronouncements, couched in a terminology partly invented and partly cobbled together from the Marxist tradition and from Lacan. Yet there it is. Althusser's work receives more extended discussion — thirty-five consecutive pages, plus numerous occasional references — in Fredric Jameson's 1981 The Political Unconscious,2 perhaps the most important American text in so-called New Historicist criticism, than any of the literary works Jameson considers except Conrad's Lord Jim.

Patriarchy is identified by womanist and feminist scholars as one of the social practices that give men more privilege and maintain women in peripheral roles. This article examines how female characters in African patriarchal settings of two Ghanaian male and female novels, Asare Adei’s A Beautiful Daughter (2012) and Amma Darko’s The Housemaid (1998) have been able to face/cope with men’s oppressions through womanist and radical feminist theories. The findings have revealed that majority of the female characters are empowered economically and socially in the male and female fictional texts, and this has enabled them to combat men’s patriarchal oppressions. The female characters’ reactions vary from one another. Some of them made use of pacific ways such as dialogue, feminine solidarity or sisterhood in their attempts to address men’s patriarchal oppressions, while others have made use of violence against men and children in their quest for justice and equality.     420 Bargu Chapter 22 Machiavelli after Althusser Banu Bargu At the end of Machiavelli and Us, Louis Althusser salutes Machiavelli as ‘the greatest materialist philosopher in history’.1 Machiavelli, he posits, is the ‘equal of Spinoza, who declared him “acutissimus”, most acute’.2 But he quickly adds: ‘Spinoza considered him acutissimus in politics. He would appear not to have suspected that Machiavelli was also most incisive in materialist philosophy’.3 Formulated thus, what appears as an assertion of the parity of importance of both figures turns out to affirm Machiavelli’s indisputable, though unrecog- nised place in the history of philosophy. In positing Machiavelli on par with Spinoza, Althusser redefines him as a materialist philosopher. Further, by evok- ing the inadequacy of Spinoza’s appreciation of Machiavelli (limited, as it was, only to politics), Althusser also insinuates that Machiavelli is not only ‘most incisive in materialist philosophy’, but, in effect, the ‘most incisive’ materialist philosopher, whose importance went unsuspected or unrecognised or, at least, not fully recognised, by the greatest minds that came after him. This is a claim not to be taken lightly, if only because the same Althusser, rejecting the charge of structuralism, confesses to being ‘guilty of an equally powerful and compromising passion’ – that of being Spinozist.4 Explaining this passion, Althusser clarifies: ‘we made a detour via Spinoza in order to im- prove our understanding of Marx’s philosophy. September 1996 Re-Thinking Masculinity: Discourses of Gender and Power in Two Workplaces. Matthew Shepherd Abstract The proliferation of academic studies of men and 'masculinity' in the last twenty years has mirrored the growth of feminist studies of women and gender relations. This thesis reflects upon these theoretical developments and examines the expression of 'masculinity' amongst employees in two contrasting workplaces in Yorkshire. Adopting a Foucauldian approach, it is suggested that 'masculinity' should be analysed as a set of practices which create, maintain and reinforce inequalities between the sexes and that their achievement is situationally contingent. From this perspective, masculinity can only be understood within a framework of power, conceptualised as relational, productive and existent only in its exercise. Critical evaluation of the 'masculinity' literature demonstrates that conventional conceptualisations of 'masculinity' have produced methodological impasses, of which the most problematic is the conflation of 'masculinity' with the study of men. The thesis proposes an alternative framework which recognises that discourses of 'masculinity' relate to the words and actions of women as well as of men and that 'masculin~y' is most profitably understood as a series of discourses - transcending the scale of the individual - which set out the 'rules', expectations and conditions within which everyday gender relations take place. The empirical investigation of these ideas adopts a qualitative approach. In-depth, repeated interviews focusing upon participants' work experiences and home lives were carried out with men and women from the two workplaces - an academic department within a university and a manufacturer of metal products.

    The Frankfurt School’s Neo-Marxian Critiques of Capitalism and Consumer Culture Dustin Garlitz University of South Florida November 2005 1 In this study, I move to make the point that the critical theorists of the Frankfurt School, in their reinterpretation and extension of social philosopher Karl Marx, were responsible for the entry of two "key-terms" in the realm of cultural theory: "The Culture Industry” and “Aura”. The term “The Culture Industry” first appeared in the West-Coast collaboration of Institute members Max Horkheimer and Theodor W. Adorno titled Dialectic of Enlightenment (1944). The romantic notion of “Aura” first appeared in an essay by affiliate-member Walter Benjamin titled “The Work of Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction” (1936). Although the critical writings of the Frankfurt School are incredibly diverse and span the range of multiple traditional disciplines in the humanities and social sciences, I want to examine the social commentary of the Institute for Social Research from an interdisciplinary perspective, spanning cultural sociology to continental philosophy to psychoanalytic thought. This examination will place special emphasis on the Institute's legacy to the interdisciplinary field of contemporary cultural studies. I would like to pay a great deal of interest on the Institute’s critiques of ideology, specifically capitalism and political economy. "The Culture Industry" and "Aura" are important terms to consider in such a study1 because they are the very cultural consequences of unrestrained, stringent American capitalism: it is the capitalist marketplace which festishizes "aura" and standardizes art. Since a capitalist line of inquiry will be taken, it only makes sense to examine the Frankfurt School’s writings on consumer culture as well (consumer culture being derivative of the dominant ideology that we call "capitalism").

    Effects of the Agrégation de Philosophie on Twentieth- Century French Philosophy AL A N D . S C HRI ft much attention has been paid to developments in French philosophy over the past half century, and it has been frequently noted that the recent history of French philosophy differs significantly from its counterparts in England, Germany, and the United States. While many reasons for these differences have been suggested, in what follows I would like to suggest that there is an important and unique French institution—one with no equivalent in the English-speaking or German academic systems—that has had a significant impact on developments in French philosophy throughout the twentieth century. This institution is the Agrégation de Philosophie, and its effects are virtually unknown among philosophers outside France. Even within France—while knowledge of and experience with the agréga- tion is part of the intellectual formation and career of virtually every academic educated in France, including every philosopher teaching in a university and the majority of philosophers teaching the classe de philosophie in French lycées—French philosophers themselves seem relatively unaware and uninterested in the history of the agrégation and the effects that this history has had on philosophical practices in France. What I hope to do in the following pages is explain how the agréga- tion de philosophie works, and suggest that its impact on the education of French philosophy students and the teaching corps in both the university and lycée helps explain a number of developments in French philosophy over the past century. I will also explain why the French philosophical tradition differs from its American counterpart in some very significant ways.

Individuals learn to perform “appropriate” gendered behaviours, according to the social norms of their respective societies. One form of gender performativity is expressed through discourse. Within the field of ASL-to-English interpretation, very little has been written on gendered discourse styles. Because this field is made up predominantly of white females, issues of gender, race, class, and sexuality influence the final interpreted utterance.
