Earthquake*in*Solukhumbu* Text and concept prepared for KKERG by: Ang Rita Sherpa (Khunde-5) May$2015$ EARTHQUAKE IN SOLUKHUMBU & KHUMBU On April 25th, a 7.9 magnitude earthquake struck whole Nepal. The earthquake has cause massive damage and the government reports that at least 9000 have died and approximately 12000 injured and missing. Now the situation seems to slowly be improving; and some immediate relief efforts are under way from different angles. The Khunde & Khumjung Earthquake Relief Group (KKERG) was formed with the goal to support the earthquake victims. These photos are compiled by KKERG on behalf of Khumjung and Namche VDCs. INTRODUCTION Investigations into the candidacy of the TENGBOCHE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT took place between November 20th and 30th, 2001 in Nepal. (Institute for Tourism and Development) the data concerning the concept, aims and success of the project as stated in the contest documents could be verified without any problems – with the following results: The expert appraiser proposes that the TENGBOCHE DEVELOPMENT PROJECT be awarded the TO DO!-prize. 2. BACKGROUND 2.1 THE COUNTRY The Kingdom of Nepal is situated between the region of Tibet annexed by China in the North and India in the South. It stretches from east to west along the southern slopes of the Himalayas with a length of just under 900 km and a width of up to 250 km. With its area of 147 181 square kilometres – corresponding to the surface of Austria and Switzerland together – it has a population of just under 25 million people (census of July 2001).1 About 82 percent of Nepal’s population make their living out of farming. The per capita income per year is around 220 US dollars. With this, Nepal ranks among the poorest and least developed countries in the world with almost half of its population living below the poverty line.

GOKYO CHOLA PASS (Including Everest Base Camp) ITINERARY/ INCLUSIONS/ EXCLUSIONS Day 01: Arrive and are met at Tribhuvan International Airport. Transferred to your hotel and briefed on the process for the trip. The remainder of the day is at your leisure. We recommend trying dinner at OR2K Restaurant in the Thamel area. Day 02: Kathmandu city sightseeing. Photo © Stan Stevens Stan Stevens December 2008 Executive Summary Sherpa community and conservation leaders gathered on May 25, 2008 in Khumjung, the largest of the many Sherpa villages in the traditional Sherpa territory of Khumbu in the Mt. Everest region which are enclaves of Sherpa land within Sagarmatha (Chomolungma/Mt. Everest) National Park (SNP). Most had walked for hours from other regional villages. They had gathered at the request of prominent elected local conservation leaders for an informal discussion about maintaining and strengthening their conservation of their sacred lands and community livelihood commons in a place which for them is a homeland, sacred valley, and Buddhist sanctuary (beyul) which as Sherpas they have responsibility to care for. They had come from nearly all of the many villages which were legally protected as private, Sherpa lands in the 1970s when the rest of Khumbu Sherpa lands were nationalized and incorporated into Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park (SNP) and World Heritage Site and the national forest to the south of it. These Sherpa villages, which have never been part of SNP or the SNP World Heritage Site, were declared part of the SNP Buffer Zone in 2002 together with the Sherpa commons of lower Khumbu which earlier had been made part of Nepal’s national forest.

Everest View Trek Overview Everest View Trek Everest View Trek is the easiest and most scenic way to see Mount Everest face to face. This is the most popular trek for those who either do not have enough time or are inexperienced in high altitude trekking. If you have dreamed of seeing Mount Everest in person, but are not willing to take on the Everest Base Camp Trek, this trail is perfect for you. The Everest View Trek leads through the beautiful little Sherpa settlements of Lukla, Phakding, Namche Bazaar, Khumjung, and Tengboche. The trail follows the same route as the Everest Base Camp up to Tengboche. In fact, by the end of the trek, you will have hiked on 70% of the Everest Base Camp trail. After landing at the Lukla Airport, the trail passes little Sherpa settlements until Phakding. Then, you follow the Dudhkoshi River up to the highest bridge, cross it, and climb more to Namche Bazaar, the biggest city of the Everest region. On this day, you enter the world's highest national park – Sagarmatha National Park. The park is lush with vegetation, rhododendron forest, pine trees, and birch tree. Most people stops in Namche Bazaar for a day of acclimatization and exploration. On our acclimatization day, you’ll hike to the wonderful Sagarmatha National Park Viewpoint, which offers an awesome view of the Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Amadablam, Nuptse, and many more Himalaya peaks.
