GEEZERS ON WHEEZERS RIDE THE RED COAT TRAIL – Daily Route Information Day 4 – Wednesday August 2nd, Assiniboia to - Two Route Options and Several Choices 9:00 AM - Gather at 121 Steakhouse for meeting (opens 6:00 AM for breakfast). Option 1: - 9:30 - tour the museum (opens 9:00AM – admission $5.00). The museum features a classic car collection and the Prentice African Safari Exhibit. Another attraction in town to possibly check out is the Shurniak Art Gallery. - 10:00 – 11:00 AM - Leave Assiniboia heading north on Highway 2 for lunch in Mossbank. Restaurant suggestion: Bent Nail Café – 411 Main St. (Has a 5 Star Trip Advisor rating) - After lunch, you could tour the Mossbank and District Museum (on Main St.). It features a heritage blacksmith shop, a tribute to WWII gunnery, and a display on the Old Wives Lake Massacre. - From Mossbank head north of town for a 5 KM ride on a grid road to the Old Wives Lake Nature Area. It is a migratory bird sanctuary and shorebird reserve. There is a bird watching deck and gazebo, and for those wanting a stretch, there is a 2.4 KM self-guided walking tour, said to have lots of wildlife. - Return to Mossbank, and continue north on Highway 2 to Moose Jaw (72 KM). Thirteen KM before Moose Jaw you will see the Sukanen Museum on the west side of the highway. It features a large collection of cars, tractors, historic buildings, a grain elevator and an ocean-going ship built in the 1930s by a homesick homesteader wanting to return to Finland via the South River. If you have time you can visit the Sukanen Museum today (2 to 3 hrs. minimum time recommended), or return tomorrow – it’s also one of the Day 5 options. -Continue north from the Sukanen Museum on Highway 2. It goes through the centre of Moose Jaw (AKA Main St.) and exits to the TransCanada Highway on the north side of town. That’s close to our supper gathering spot the Prairie Oasis Tourist Complex (see below), and the Western Development Museum (location of wind-up tomorrow). Option 2: - Leave Assiniboia about 9:30 and go southwest on Highway 13 about 28 KM to the junction of Highway 36. - Turn north on the grid road and ride about 5 KM to the hamlet of Readlyn to tour a huge private collection of vintage cars, tractors, airplanes and horse-drawn equipment etc. etc. The Thompson family has five 50’X80’ buildings housing the larger items and 2 smaller sheds containing smaller antiques. Donations would be appreciated. Expect to spend at least 2 to 3 hours to get a good look at the collection. - After Readlyn, return to Assiniboia for lunch (decide where that day). After lunch ride to Moose Jaw via highway 2 as outlined above, (with the possibility of a stop in Mossbank and/or the Sukanen Museum).

*If you arrive early enough, there is also a lot to see in Moose Jaw. Check the “Activities for Non-riders” list before you get to town, and explore Moose Jaw on your own for the balance of the afternoon. *We encourage everyone to gather at the Prairie Oasis Tourist Complex for a 6:00 PM supper at the restaurant attached to the Tempo service station. (Prairie Oasis is on the north side of Moose Jaw at 955 Thatcher Dr. E, on the south side of Highway 1 – the Trans-). Although we will order off the menu and (depending on tour finances), pay for our own meals, the restaurant will seat us as a group, bring in extra staff, and give us a 10% discount if we let them know a couple of days ahead how many to expect. *The Prairie Oasis Tourist Complex has a campground, motel, Tempo service station, and a restaurant. Being next to the TransCanada, it’s not too far from the WD Museum and other hotels - a good central location. With the service station right there, the restaurant would also be a good place to congregate for breakfast and meeting tomorrow morning. *Camping facilities at Prairie Oasis look good for tenting and RVs - the motel is old school and plain. The manager said they would give individuals booking in (in either the motel or campground), a discount if they mentioned they were with Geezers on Wheezers. There are other hotels close by – e.g. the Best Western Plus is basically across the street at 350 Diefenbaker.
