In spite of the district’s top-notch status in terms of high educational, human development index and humungous industrial productivity, given its geography, climate and certain other socio-political attributes, the district administration and its people have to co-exist with the probabilities of hazards like floods, cyclone, Tsunami, drought, heat wave, lightning and chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear emergencies. The Disastrous events in the recent past like the Tsunami of 2004, the catastrophic floods of year 2015, the cyclone of year 2016 and most recently the COVID-19 pandemic, will serve as a testament to the district’s vulnerability to such hazards. How the society responds to such vagaries of nature decides the magnitude and intensity of the destruction that may entail hazardous events. It is against this back drop, the roll of the District Disaster Management Authority can be ideally understood. The change in perspective from a relief- based approach to a more holistic disaster management approach has already begun to gain currency among the policy makers due to its substantial success in efficient handling of recent disasters across the globe. The need of the hour, therefore, is a comprehensive disaster management plan which is participative and people-friendly with the component of inter- departmental co-ordination at its crux. -

It is noted that the proposal is for setting up of 4000 MW Imported Coal Based Ultra Mega Power Project at villages Cheyyur Block B, Chitharkadu, Gangadevankupam, Panaiyur, Vedal, and Vilangadu, Taluk Cheyyur, District Kancheepuram, in Tamil Nadu. Land requirement will be 416.45 ha, out of which 342.62 ha is agriculture land, 9.83 ha is forest land and 64 ha is Poromboke and barren govt. land. Stage-I forestry clearance has been obtained. The co-ordinates of the site are located within Latitude 12018’15.70” N to 12019’15.38” N and Longitude 79057’58.33”E to 79059’17.91” E. Imported Coal requirement will be 12-14 MPTA at 90 %PLF. Ash and Sulphur contents in coal will be 10-12% and 0.8%. -

Department of History, Pondicherry Central University, Pondicherry – 605 014, India (Email: [email protected]) Received: 25 July 2019; Revised: 04 September 2019; Accepted: 09 October 2019 Heritage: Journal of Multidisciplinary Studies in Archaeology 7 (2019): 450‐462 Abstract: Studies on the status of Women in historical context exclusively based on the analysis of epigraphical sources are few and far between, particularly in the case of Tamil, Kannada and Kerala regions of India. This paper will analyse the position and roles of Jain women as recorded in early and medieval inscriptions of the ancient Tamilakam including Karnataka and Kerala regions of Peninsular India. The study shows that Jain women in the records were largely Nuns and religious teachers who played a significant role in the spiritual scenario of the society and period under discussion. Records mention them as Kuratti, Kanti and Kavundi. They were described as carving out caverns and endowing them to other monks and Nuns of the same sect. They also constructed temples and basties. They made munificent land grants and other endowments to the Jain establishments called Pallis. They played the role of chief priestesses of the temples. In certain cases, they even organized monasteries exclusively for the Nuns and involved in large scale missionary and other spiritual activities. They provided public utilities for the common people. These inscriptions also attest to the role of the lay Jaina woman followers such as queens, princesses, family members of the subordinate rulers, dancing girls, etc. -

Read Full License Page 1/19 Abstract Background The coastal population of Indian subcontinent experience variety of coastal hazards of which cyclone is the most destructive one. Most recently, on 20th May 2020, the super cyclone Amphan lashed with 155 km/h, as tall as a two-story building on the Eastern coast and state of West Bengal in India. In the following year 2021, another cyclonic storm, named Yaas, intensied in the Bay of Bengal in May, and it has ravaged many parts of the apex of the BoB coast. Over the decades, the devastating tropical cyclones of the Bay of Bengal (BoB) have thrashed thousands of lives and properties. Methods An empirical study to assess the coastal population's vulnerability and mortality along the east coastal districts of India is the need of the hour. Using a set of data the paper estimates the hazard exposure, sensitivity, and adaptability. Further, to understand the association between vulnerability and neonatal and under-5 mortality, regressions are applied. -

Janakarajan, Siddharth Hande & Nityanand Jayaraman July 2014 About the Contributors Community Environmental Monitoring, a program of The Other Media, extends scientific, legal and media advocacy support to communities opposed to pollution and wrongful alienation of land and natural resources. S. Janakarajan is a Retired Professor from Madras Institute of Development Studies and currently Professorial Associate at the Centre for Water and Development, SOAS, University of London and President, South Asia Consortium for Inter-disciplinary Water Studies (SaciWATERs), Hyderabad. His areas of interest include climate change, environment, water management, urban water, conflicts and conflict resolution and delta studies. At the time of writing, he is engaged in mapping the water bodies of Thiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts, Tamil Nadu, as a part of the project funded by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India. Siddharth Hande is a geo-spatial analyst, and an urban studies and New Media researcher who is currently working as a project assistant at the Indian Institute of Technology-Madras. Nityanand Jayaraman is an engineer-turned-environmental journalist who has spent more than 20 years covering industrial pollution, and coastal ecology and economies. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY A 4000 MW coal fired power plant is proposed to be set up under the Government of India's Ultra Mega Power Project (UMPP) scheme in Cheyyur Taluk of Kancheepuram district, Tamil Nadu. The coastal plant will run on imported coal that will be received at a captive jetty-cum-port in Panaiyur village. -

Cover photo: Shweta Narayan, 2013 Tamil Translation: J Muthuvel Background The Government of India has identified Cheyyur in Kanchipuram district, Tamil Nadu, as one of several sites for a 4000 MW ultra mega power plant (UMPP) using imported coal and super-critical technology. Super-critical technology claims to attain far higher thermal-electrical conversion efficiencies than sub-critical plants, thereby maximising the conversion of coal's embedded thermal energy into electricity.1 The coal would be brought in through a captive jetty-cum-port located between the fishing villages of Panaiyur Periakuppam and Panaiyur Chinnakuppam. The port will occupy a 650 metre shorefront. A coal stocking yard capable of storing 310,000 tonnes of coal will be constructed on 83 acres of coastal land abutting the two fishing villages. -

TamilNadu, which is supposed to be the next state to Rajasthan in average annual rain fall depends largely on the surface water irrigation as well as ground water irrigation. The state has used the surface and ground water potentials to the maximum limit and hence the future development and expansion depends only on the efficient and economical use of water potential and resources available. To achieve the water use efficiency it is necessary to improve and upgrade the existing conveyance system and also to introduce modern irrigation methods. With the above objectives a comprehensive programme has been proposed with Multi disciplinary approach. 1.1.2 DESCRIPTION OF THE VARAHANADHI BASIN: The Varahanadhi basin is one of the major river basins and is located in Villupuram, Thiruvannamalai, Kancheepuram and Cuddalore districts of Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. This basin has been divided into 3 sub-basins namely as follows; 1. Varahanadhi 2. Ongur 3. Nallavur 1.1.3 DESCRIPTION OF ONGUR SUB BASIN: The Ongur sub basin is located in Villupuram, Thiruvannamalai, and Kancheepuram districts of Tamil Nadu. The total area of the sub basin is 624sq.km. The Ongur sub basin is surrounded by Bay of Bengal in the east, Palar basin in the north, Nallavur sub basin in the south and Varahanathi sub basin in the west. There are 8 blocks in this sub basin of which 4 blocks are covered in full and the remaining blocks are partly covered. -
