The U.S. economy encountered headwinds, including a partial government shutdown and transient deterioration in consumer senti- ment, but nonetheless continued to recover, buoyed by a Federal Reserve pivot to interest rate increases in addition to robust employ- ment and income environments and growth in capital investment. The European economy slowed mildly, largely in response to a downshift in exports, softness in domestic demand and a U.K. eco- nomic slowdown. Additionally, the European economic outlook turned murkier, clouded in part by fraught Brexit negotiations between the United Kingdom and the EU. The Chinese economy continued to slow in the wake of deterioration in consumer sentiment and stagnant infrastructure investment despite government efforts to bolster the economy with stimulus measures, including tax cuts and subsidies. China is in the midst of rebalancing its economy from investment-led to consumption-led growth while shifting its growth strategy from a quantitative to a qualitative focus.

machine learning & knowledge extraction Article Real-Time Vehicle Make and Model Recognition System Muhammad Asif Manzoor *, Yasser Morgan and Abdul Bais Faculty of Engineering and Applied Science, University of Regina, Regina, SK S4S 0A2, Canada; [email protected] (Y.M.); [email protected] (A.B.) * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 29 January 2019; Accepted: 15 April 2019; Published: 17 April 2019 Abstract: A Vehicle Make and Model Recognition (VMMR) system can provide great value in terms of vehicle monitoring and identification based on vehicle appearance in addition to the vehicles’ attached license plate typical recognition. A real-time VMMR system is an important component of many applications such as automatic vehicle surveillance, traffic management, driver assistance systems, traffic behavior analysis, and traffic monitoring, etc. A VMMR system has a unique set of challenges and issues. Few of the challenges are image acquisition, variations in illuminations and weather, occlusions, shadows, reflections, large variety of vehicles, inter-class and intra-class similarities, addition/deletion of vehicles’ models over time, etc. In this work, we present a unique and robust real-time VMMR system which can handle the challenges described above and recognize vehicles with high accuracy. We extract image features from vehicle images and create feature vectors to represent the dataset. We use two classification algorithms, Random Forest (RF) and Support Vector Machine (SVM), in our work. We use a realistic dataset to test and evaluate the proposed VMMR system. The vehicles’ images in the dataset reflect real-world situations. The proposed VMMR system recognizes vehicles on the basis of make, model, and generation (manufacturing years) while the existing VMMR systems can only identify the make and model.

  • Asean NCAP's Success and Challenges in Promoting Safer
Transport and Communications Bulletin for Asia and the Pacific No. 89, 2019 ASEAN NCAP’S SUCCESS AND CHALLENGES IN PROMOTING SAFER VEHICLES IN THE ESCAP REGION Khairil Anwar Abu Kassim, Ahmad, Jawi and Ishak Abstract Starting from 2011, ASEAN NCAP has been mandated to carry out crash tests on new cars in the ESCAP region, particularly Southeast Asia. With a total population of over 630 million, the 10 countries comprising ASEAN have seen passenger vehicle sales reach over three million units. To date, 90 percent of the vehicles sold in ASEAN market have been tested by ASEAN NCAP. Their safety aspects have been greatly improved over time. But aside from the safety of car occupants, ASEAN NCAP is also concerned with the safety of vulnerable road users. In November 2018, ASEAN NCAP announced its latest road map which focuses on the safety of motorcyclists in the region. ASEAN NCAP’s efforts have also been recognized by the Malaysian government, as of next year, all car dealers are to showcase the star rating issued by ASEAN NCAP on the car’s front windshield and side mirror in all showroom and sales centres in Malaysia. This is to educate buyers to choose the models that give priority to the best rating. The current paper shall provide an overview of the results produced by ASEAN NCAP, including its success and challenges to elevate the safety standards of passenger vehicles in the Southeast Asian market. In addition, the last section will describe ASEAN NCAP road map which guides its journey toward achieving SDG targets 3.6 and 11.2.

  • Umw Toyota Motor Announces Special Service Campaign to Replace Airbag Sensor for Toyota and Lexus Models
UMW TOYOTA MOTOR ANNOUNCES SPECIAL SERVICE CAMPAIGN TO REPLACE AIRBAG SENSOR FOR TOYOTA AND LEXUS MODELS Shah Alam, 1st February 2018 - Safety of our customers is always Toyota’s top priority. UMW Toyota Motor Sdn Bhd (UMWT), distributor of Toyota and Lexus vehicles in Malaysia, today announced a Special Service Campaign (SSC) to inspect and if required, replace the airbag sensor of certain units of the Toyota Corolla Altis, Lexus NX and Lexus RX model. This SSC is announced following the move by Toyota Motor Corporation (TMC) to start a global Special Service Campaign regarding an Airbag Sensor which was announced on 31st January. Based on information received from TMC, the number of affected are 2,800 units of Toyota Corolla Altis, and around 500 units of Lexus NX and Lexus RX. These cars were manufactured from June 2015 to January 2016 and distributed by UMWT and Lexus Malaysia. The defect relates to manufacturing issues as there are possibilities that the insulation of Integrated Circuit (IC) chips in affected Pressure sensors and G sensors could peel off over time, creating an open circuit in the IC chip. If this were to occur, the airbag warning light will illuminate. Further, the side/curtain airbags and/or front airbags can become deactivated and will not deploy when required to. This could increase the risk of injury to the occupants in the event of a crash. TMC is currently working on obtaining the necessary parts for the SSC and when the parts are available, UMWT will notify affected owners to request them to bring their cars to an authorised Toyota or Lexus authorized service centre to make the necessary replacements.
