Guy Wilkinson PhD Thesis (2017) CHAPTER IV INDIVIDUAL PLAYER CONTRIBUTIONS IN EUROPEAN SOCCER ABSTRACT This paper looks at applying new techniques to predict match outcomes in professional soccer. To achieve this models are used which measure the individual contributions of soccer players within their team. Using data from the top 25 European soccer leagues, the individual contribution of players is measured using high dimensional fixed effects models. Nine years of results are used to produce player, team and manager estimates. A further year of results is used to check for predictive accuracy. Since this has useful applications in player scouting the paper will also look at how well the models rank players. The findings show an average prediction rate of 45% with all methods showing similar rankings for player productivity. While the model highlights the most productive players there is a bias towards players who produce and prevent goals directly. This results in more attackers and defenders ranking highly than midfield players. There is potential for these techniques to be used against the betting market as most models produce better performance than many betting firms. Guy Wilkinson PhD Thesis (2017) 1. This methodology has proved to be useful in measuring the economic value of intangible talent in professional sport and in other entertainment industries. In our estimations – and in the elaboration of the rankings – two elements are taken into consideration: popularity (degree of interest aroused between the fans and the general public) and media value (the level of attention that the mass media pays). The calculations may be made at specific points in time during a season, or accumulating the news generated during a particular period: weeks, months, years, etc. Additionally, the homogeneity amongst the measurements allows for a comparison of the media value status of individuals, teams, institutions, etc. Together with the measurements and rankings, our database allows us to conduct analyses on a wide variety of economic and business problems: estimates of the market value (or “fair value”) of players’ transfer fees; calculation of the brand value of individuals, teams and leagues; valuation of the economic return from alliances between sponsors; image rights contracts of athletes and teams; and a great deal more. -

THE VALUE OF TOP FOOTBALL PLAYERS The 2013 summer transfer window saw Gareth Bale become the most expensive football player in the world, when he left Tottenham Hotspur for Real Madrid – for a record fee of more than £80m. An analysis of player valuations conducted by Frontier suggests that – even at the time of the deal – Bale’s footballing skills were worth just £66m. So did Real Madrid pay too much for its latest “Galáctico” – or wasn’t it all about the game? Football has long dominated the sports pages of European newspapers, but these days it can increasingly be found in the business pages as well. Europe’s largest clubs are collectively worth billions. Some, such as Manchester United and Borussia Dortmund, are now publicly-listed companies. The performance – or underperformance – of star signings can send clubs zinging up and down the financial charts as well as the football leagues. 2 Frontier Economics | February 2014 But how confident can clubs be that they are getting their money’s worth, when they sign expensive new players? To help address this question, Frontier has developed an economic model that estimates the value of players on the basis of their proven football skills, i.e. their performance so far. The model uses data collected from all transfers over £1m in the English Premier League and Spain’s La Liga – two of Europe’s richest leagues – over the past few seasons. -

View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by OpenstarTs “And maybe you can translate also what I say”: interpreters in football press conferences Annalisa Sandrelli UNINT - University of International Studies of Rome (Italy) Abstract Today most professional football teams are multilingual; at the same time, the increasing media exposure of this sport has led to a growing number of press conferences involving players and coaches with limited proficiency in the language of the country where they play. As a result, there is a niche market for interpreters in professional football. This paper presents a case study based on a small corpus of press conferences organised for the offi- cial presentation of new players: its aim is to describe communication dynamics, common practices and pitfalls and to discuss interpreter roles in such settings. Introduction As a consequence of globalisation in sports, in recent years professional football has been characterised by the increasing mobility of players, referred to by Baines (2013: 207) as elite migrant athletes. The trend is especially marked in the main Eu- ropean football leagues, the so-called Big 5 (England, France, Germany, Italy and Spain), but also affects most European countries and some “new” football coun- tries, such as China, India, the United Arab Emirates, the US and Canada. A recent survey has revealed that in the 2013-2014 season 62.93% of footballers playing in the English Premier League were foreign nationals, followed by 54.56 % in the Italian Serie A, 41.45% in the German Bundesliga, 39.02% in the Spanish Liga and 32.34% in the French Ligue 1.
