Outdoor Track and Field DIVISION I MEN’S Highlights Florida takes fi rst national title: Florida took home its fi rst NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship on June 9, snapping a three-year title run by Texas A&M. The Gators also captured the indoor track and fi eld title in March. For the second straight year, the title came down to the fi nal race, the 1,600-meter relay. Florida, LSU and Texas A&M were all in contention. Florida anchor Tony McQuay gave the Gators the lead on the backstretch and the win in 3 minutes, 0.02 seconds. Florida fi nished with 50 points, followed by LSU (48) and Texas A&M (40). Florida, who’d won the last three indoor titles without matching it in outdoors, started the bell lap for the fi nal relay in second behind Southern California, with LSU right behind. If that would have held, the Gators and Tigers would have split the national title. But, McQuay put on a burst to move past Southern California’s Bryshon Nellum, while LSU anchor Riker Hylton stayed in third. Florida State’s Maurice Mitchell won his second straight 200-meter dash with a time of 20.40, the sixth win for the school in seven years in the event. That gave Florida State a brief lead in the team standings. But, that was the Seminoles’ last shot, and they fi nished fourth with 38 points. The 1,500 meters didn’t have any impact on the team race, but it might have been the best race of the meet. Indiana’s Andrew Bayer closed on BYU’s Miles Batty down the backstretch, but Batty appeared to hold the slightest of leads as both approached the fi nish line. Bayer and Batty leaned hard and tumbled harder, and Bayer leapt up and turned to the scoreboard to learn that his 3:43.82 had bested the still-fallen Batty by 1/100th of a second. ”I was set up with 200 meters to go and I was like ‘I’m not going to let this go, I’m going to fi ght to the end,”’ Bayer said. Illinois’ Andrew Riley swept the men’s 100 meters and 110-meter high hurdles, winning the hurdles in 13.53. In the 100-meter dash, Riley, Mitchell and Auburn’s Harry Adams crosed the fi nish line in a near-photo fi nish. Riley crossed in 10.272, two-thousandths of a second ahead of Adams and fi ve-thousandths faster than Mitchell. In the 800 meters, Charles Jock of UC Irvine used the memory of losing by four-hundredths of a second in 2011 as fuel to push himself to the win. Jock took charge early in the race and dared the fi eld to try to chase him down. No one did, as Jock won in 1:45.59 with Iowa’s Erik Sowinski second in 1:45.90. Florida’s McQuay set the best collegiate marks for 2012 in winning the 400-meter dash in 44.58. Southern Utah’s Cameron Levins swept the 5,000- and 10,000-meter races, winning the 5,000 in 13:40.05 and the 10,000 in 28:07.14. Kansas State’s Erik Kynard (high jump), Arizona State’s Jordan Clarke (shot put), Illinois State’s Tim Glover (javelin) and Virginia Tech’s Alexander Ziegler (hammer throw) all repeated in their respective fi eld events. Kynard won with a leap of 7 feet, 8 inches, while Clarke placed fi rst with a throw of 66-11¼. Glover had a toss of 268-0 and Ziegler prevailed with a heave of 248-7. Nebraska sophomore Chad Wright took the discus at 206-0 and Florida’s Omar Craddock won the triple jump at 55-6¼. Texas’ Marquise Goodwin won the long jump for the second time in three years with a leap of 27-0. Boise State’s Kurt Felix won the decathlon with 8,062 points. 2012 TEAM STANDINGS 21.
