Lawrence and the cultural heritage of Eastwood and the surrounding area, which inspired so much of his work. A celebration of the life and The University works of the writer D.H. Lawrence of Nottingham is proud to support together with the mining and Nottinghamshire’s heritage cultural heritage of his birthplace Welcome to the 8th Annual D.H. Lawrence Festival In this the centenary year of the publication of ‘The White Peacock’. Come and join us for a range of walks, talks, performances and family activities to celebrate Lawrence’s life and work, many themed around ‘The White Peacock’ and Lawrence’s love of the local countryside. Events will run from Friday 9th to Sunday 18th September 2011 with the Exhibition in the gallery continuing until the end of September. This shorter festival period is mainly due to the uncertain future we were facing up until March 2011, when the University of Nottingham kindly donated a sum of money to assist in funding Durban House for the next two years. Tea Shop Local Artist Mike Tomlinson exhibits art work with a Lawrence theme, including maps and pieces produced specifically for the Festival including ‘The Ram Inn’, ‘Moorgreen Resevoir’ and ‘Felley Mill, the latter featured in the White Peacock and ‘Strelley Mill’. 3 Annual Membership and Festival bookings We now offer annual memberships so that if you are going to visit us more than once, you may want to take advantage of this. Annual members can enjoy unlimited access* to tours at the Birthplace Museum and the Exhibition at Durban House, free craft sessions, invitations and discounts to special event, seasonal discounts on gifts and memorabilia and the ability to pre-book many events in advance of the general public. LAWRENCE FESTIVAL 2011 Lawrence’s Birthday Celebrations Sunday 11th September Durban House and The Birthplace Museum Come and join us for a day of Victorian family activities, to celebrate ‘Bert’s birthday’ at Durban House and the Birthplace Museum. Listen to the barrel organ, have a go on the coconut shy and see our Punch and Judy show amongst other things. The fun starts at 11am and goes on until 3pm. Punch and Judy – Birthplace Museum 11.30am and 1.00pm Places limited and operate on ticket basis, first come first served – tickets from Durban House on the day. The D.H. Lawrence ‘Birthday Lecture’ by Keith Sagar and Leo Salter 3.00pm - Durban House Keith Sagar - ‘How to Live: The End of Lawrence’s Quest’. A condensed version of the Harry T. Moore Memorial Lecture given at the International Lawrence Conference in Santa Fe in 2005. There will also be a chance to buy Keith’s new book, a selection of Souvenirs at ‘Festival offer prices’ and refreshements. 6.00pm - 7.15pm Dr Leo Salter, President of the Royal Society of Chemistry’s • Keith Sagar Environment, Sustainability and Energy Division continues with the Birthday Lecture with a talk entitled “D H Lawrence and Environmental Destruction. Booking required as spaces limited. £5.00 (includes glass of wine/refreshments) £2.50 DHL Annual Members 5 Festival Walks and Tours Saturday 10th September Lawrence’s Footsteps A guided walk (also as part of the Broxtowe Walking Festival) around Felley Mill and Brinsley visiting Lawrence Country to see the views which inspired Lawrence in much of his writing. Walk length approx 6 miles, walking shoes required. Start 10.15am - approximately 5 hours finishing at Durban house for afternoon tea. £6.00 per person, includes afternoon tea and Lawrence Country Guide - £2.00 Annual Members. Birthplace Museum Guided tours as part of Heritage Open Weekend. Free entry but booking required. Tours run at 11.15am/12.45pm/1.45pm/2.45pm and bookings will be taken from 10.30am on the day by calling 01773 717353 or visiting Durban House. Durban House will also be open 10.00-4.00pm. Wednesday 14th September Blue Line Trail Walk Start 6.00pm Guided walk around the Blue Line trail in Eastwood, taking in the Breech House (additional donation on the night) and Lawrence’s other houses. Booking advised. Cost £5.00 to include soup supper on return to Durban House. Birthplace Museum Evening tours 5.00pm/6.00pm Booking required. LAWRENCE FESTIVAL 2011 Festival Lectures and Reading Groups Thursday 15th September ‘The Chambers Family and Haggs Farm’ Clive Leivers Durban House Heritage Centre. 4.30pm - 6.00pm Come and listen to a talk by Clive Leivers, Chairman of the Haggs Farm Preservation Society about life at Arno Vale Farm and the Chambers emigration to Canada. Information will also be available on the work of the ‘Friends of Haggs Farm and the Preservation Society’. Admission Free. Donations to Haggs Farm appreciated. Reading Group on D. H. Lawrence’s short story ‘New Eve and Old Adam’ Durban House Heritage Centre, Eastwood. 6.30pm - 7.30pm Dr Andrew Harrison and Dr Kevin Harvey, from the School of English Studies at the University of Nottingham, will lead a discussion of ‘New Eve and Old Adam’, a fascinating experimental short story written by Lawrence in 1913. Everybody is welcome to attend. Copies of the story will be made available for collection from the reception at Durban House ahead of the event. Soup supper will be available plus a range of drinks including wine. 7 Beauvale Priory Sketching Day to Create Original Leaflet Illustrations Thursday 15th September 10.00 until 4.00 pm Spend a relaxing day at Beauvale Priory, working alongside local artist Mike Tomlinson to capture this inspiring building and landscape in pencil, paint or pastel. We are hoping to recruit a team of local artists who will help us create a visual archive of the site as it is in 2011. Mike will begin the day with a quick tour of the site, explaining the history of each area. He will then be ‘on hand’ throughout the day with practical help, hints and tips about how to get the best out of your artwork. We hope to use a selection of the images created in a new leaflet about the history of the site. Following the workshop we will ask to keep the artwork and get it electronically scanned and then the original work will be returned to you. No images would be used in the leaflet without first getting your consent. The price of the workshop includes lunch and an accompanying drink served in the newly open, on site Tea Rooms. Hot and cold drinks and snacks are also available to buy throughout the day. Participants should bring their own preferred materials and a drawing board/easel.

    1 Introduction Welcome to our fourth volume of ‘100 Walks from the Poppy and Pint’. This volume contains Spring Walks for you to enjoy now that the lockdown has eased. I hope that you find it useful. You will find 49 walks in this volume bringing the total number of walks in the series to 150! This volume is quite different to the other volumes. These walks have been specially selected from a wider radius of Lady Bay. This gives us more choice, more variety, and the chance to showcase different areas. Most of the walks start within 30 minutes’ drive from the Poppy and Pint and most are relatively short walks of around two to three hours. All have been chosen because they hold one or more points of interest. Moreover, the paths are quiet, they are varied, and all are on good, waymarked paths. This makes them ideal spring walks just after the lockdown. Being out on the trail in the open air anywhere lifts the spirits, is good for the soul, and gives our lives a different perspective. I think we always feel better when we come back from a walk! Do try it and see! This is the fourth volume of walks to complement Volumes One, Two and Three. Unfortunately, it is not possible to put these four volumes into one tome as the subsequent size of the file would be too big to e mail! When I set myself the challenge of researching and creating 100 local walks, I never actually thought it was possible.

    Minutes of Annesley & Felley Parish Council meeting held virtually via Zoom on 7th September 2020 at 7.00pm. It was agreed that three quotes will be obtained for “earth bunding” around the Middle Land. 5.2 a) Quote approved to purchase, from Golden Valley Light Railway, an old railway coal wagon for £250 + VAT. b) Quote approved for transportation and refurbishment of £472 + VAT c) Other decisions - site location, sign writing and site preparation - to be confirmed. d) ADC to be asked to establish whether a 9 foot x 4 foot concrete base can be installed to site the wagon on the land on Annesley Cutting near to the Cemetery. 5.3 “Information” signage to be attached to the Pit Wheel on Annesley Cutting.
