I’m always happy to talk about skiing. INT: Can you state your birthdate please? DH: June 12, 1931. A long time ago. INT: Your address up here is 100 Forest Road Marquette. Your birth day? DH: I was born in St. Luke’s Hospital in Marquette. The building is still there on Hubbard Court and College. The oldest part of the hospital, it’s still there. INT: Before we get to skiing, I’d like to ask you about your years at University of Michigan. Why did you pick that particular university and your major? DH: I guess the main reason I went there is because I got an alumni scholarship to go to college and it was to the University of Michigan. Since then I’ve been very grateful that I went because I have tremendous admiration for the University of Michigan. It’s evident by my ??? down there. INT: What years did you go to the university? DH: First I graduated from John D. Pierce High School here in Marquette in 1949. Then that fall I went to the University of Michigan. I got my first degree in 1953, 4 years later.     Robert A. Keck Oconomowoc Ski Club Bob competed on 90 meter ski jumps from 1955-1978. He continued to compete on 70 meter ski jumps through 1993. And he competed on the 65 meter and smaller ski jumps through 2004, retiring from Master competition at the age of 66. 1949 Began ski jumping practice during recess and evenings on a junior jump in a gravel pit behind Oconomowoc High School at age of 13 1951 Southern Wisconsin Junior Ski Jumping Champion. Inducted into the U.S. Army. Stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado in the 10th Rocky Mountain Division. Petitioned the Pentagon/granted permission to compete in the U.S. as a member of an armed forces team with Walter Cherry, Peter Langlois, and Lenny Meyer 3rd place - North American Ski Jumping Championships - Iron Mt., Michigan. Competed for a decade in three classes (Jr., Senior, Masters) on the Pine Mountain 90meter ski jump.

    DICKINSON COUNTY HISTORY – SPORTS – PINE MOUNTAIN SKI SLIDE [Transcribed from Website by William J. Cummings] PINE MOUNTAIN SKI SLIDE IRON MOUNTAIN, DICKINSON COUNTY, MICHIGAN The Pine Mountain ski slide at one time was the highest artificial ski jump in the world. It was the culmination of constant interest of a small number of skiing enthusiasts, later augmented by a growing group of winter sport devotees in Iron Mountain and Kingsford. In 1929, an artificial slide was built on Hemlock Street, facing Brown Street, on land donated by E.G. Kingsford. The slide was built by local riders. Poor snow in 1930 dampened skiing enthusiasm, and nothing was done until 1933, when the original jumpers and a second group which had been riding Lightning Hill, combined, and, with funds contributed by local merchants and manufacturers, constructed the Devil's Hill Slide, the first all-metal slide in the Upper Peninsula. Shortly after the new slide had been put in use, riders, with the support of the Kiwanis Club, formed the Kiwanis Ski Club on January 5, 1934. The Devil's Hill Slide was dedicated January 21 of the same year before a crowd of 5,000 persons. Tournaments were held on Devil's Hill annually for the next four years. This slide was near Crystal Lake and was dismantled for scrap iron during World War II. The development of Pine Mountain was undertaken by the Dickinson County Board of Park Trustees in 1937 at the request of various civic and governmental bodies. Some work had been done earlier by Ted Kingsford and Harold Eskil, then Breitung Township supervisor, but the job was unable to be completed, so the deed to the property was given to the park group with the understanding that the park trustees complete the construction.
