Preschool & Pre-K Israel’s Unfaithfulness – Judges 1-3 Story Point: God’s people forgot about Him. Summary: Joshua died, and without a leader, the Israelites began to disobey God. God wanted them to love and obey Him, so He gave them a new leader called a judge. Othniel was the first judge and led the Israelites into battle. God helped them win and gave them peace. When Othniel died, the Israelites forgot about God again and worshiped false gods. God let the king of Moab defeat them so that they would turn back to Him. The Israelites cried out to God to save them, and He chose Ehud to save them. Ehud went to the king of Moab with a gift, and when he was alone with the king, Ehud killed him. Ehud became their new leader, and Israel once again had peace in the land. When Ehud died, the Israelites forgot about God again! When they remembered, they cried out to God to save them. God heard them again and sent them a third judge, Shamgar, to save them. Questions: Big Picture Question: What is repentance? Repentance is turning away from sin and turning to Jesus. 1. When Joshua died, what did the Israelites do? (They forgot about God.) 2. When the Israelites remembered how good it had been when they loved and obeyed God, what did they do? (They cried out to God to save them.) 3. How did God answer His people’s cries for help? (He sent them a judge to help them.) 4. What did the Israelites do after each judge died? (They forgot about God again.) 5. Memorize 1 John 1:9a as a family: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us.” Christ Connection: After God’s people sinned, the judges helped God’s people obey God again. But the judges could not change the people’s hearts and make them love God. God had a plan. He sent His Son, Jesus, to change His people’s hearts and save them from sin forever. As You Wake, Drive, Eat, and Go to Sleep nd Kindergarten – 2 Grade Israel’s Unfaithfulness – Judges 1-3 Story Point: God’s people repeatedly turned from Him. Summary: When Joshua died, the Israelites disobeyed God and worshiped false gods. Out of anger, God allowed an enemy king to take over Israel. The people cried out to God to save them. God raised up Othniel as a judge to rule over them. He led the Israelites to obey God for 40 years, and God gave them peace. When Othniel died, the people disobeyed God again, and God allowed the king of Moab to attack Israel and defeat them. Again, they cried out to God to save them. God raised up Ehud to defeat and kill the king of Moab. He then became the leader of Israel, and the people obeyed God for 80 years and had peace in the land. When Ehud died, the people disobeyed God yet again. They turned away from Him, and God allowed them to be attacked once more. The people cried out to God to save them, and God raised up a third judge, Shamgar, to save them. Questions: Big Picture Question: What is repentance? Repentance is turning away from sin and turning to Jesus. 1. What did the Israelites do that angered God? ( Disobeyed His commands and worshiped other gods.) 2. Did God abandon the people for their sin? (No, he sent them judges to help them when they repented.) 3. Why do you think the people kept turning from God? (Explain that it is a result of sin, and we all have the tendency to do the same thing. If we do not keep our eyes fixed on God, we can all fall away.) 4. How do we know God still loves us even when we sin? (The Bible tells us so. Ultimately, because of His great love for us, He sent Jesus, so that we could be forgiven on that sin and live with Him.) Christ Connection: The judges saved the people from the consequences of their sin, but not the cause of it. God’s plan was to one day send a true Deliverer – Jesus, His own Son – to be the King of His people. Jesus saves people from sin forever. When the judge died, they turned away from God and worshiped other gods, and God would punish them. They would follow God again when a new judge came.) 2. What did the Israelites need to be rescued from their enemies? (They needed a savior, one of the judges. The judges pointed to the ultimate Savior, King Jesus.) 3. How does Jesus deliver sinners? (Take some time to share the gospel with your children.) Christ Connection: The judges saved the people from the consequences of their sin, but not the cause of it.
