William Henry Jackson Photochrom Collection Ca William Henry Jackson Photochrom Collection ca. 1895-1908 and n.d. Decker Library, Maryland Institute College of Art Collection Overview Repository: Decker Library, Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, MD Reference Code: whjph Creator: William Henry Jackson and the Detroit Publishing Company. Title: William Henry Jackson Photochrom Collection Dates: ca. 1895-1908 and n.d. Quantity: 187 items Abstract: The collection consists of 187 photo-reproduction prints (most in color) made by the William Henry Jackson and the Detroit Photographic Company. Historical / Biographical Note: William Henry Jackson (1843-1942) was an American painter, photographer and publisher. Already an accomplished painter, Jackson served in the Civil War, after which he traveled in the United States and abroad as a photographer under the auspices of several corporate and governmental entities, producing a large quantity of documentary images. In the 1890s, Jackson joined the Detroit Publishing Co. and provided them with his stock of ~10,000 negatives, which became the bulk of the company’s inventory. From the negatives, the company produced for images for sale, ranging from postcards to mammoth-plate panoramas. The images form an extensive documentary archive of the United States and nearby geographical areas. The collection here utilizes the Photochrom process, where colorized images are produced from black-and-white photographic negatives via the direct photographic transfer of a negative onto lithographic printing plates. The process is a photographic variant of chromolithography, a broader term that refers to color lithography in general. 1 Provenance: Gift, Caroline B. Bowersox, 2014 and 2015. Accession: 2014.001.a, 2015.003a. Processed by: Katherine Cowan, 2015. Preferred citation: William Henry Jackson Photochrom Collection, ca. 1895-1908 and n.d. Decker Library, Maryland Institute College of Art. Alternative forms available: Numerous examples of William Henry Jackson Photochroms are digitized and available online through libraries in the U.S.A.. See Related Materials for one example (Library of Congress). Image samples are also included at the end of this document. Related materials: ● The Library of Congress holds visual materials pertaining to William Henry Jackson, including Photochrom examples from the Detroit Photographic Company, and other photographs by Jackson, as well as portraits of Jackson and his family and associates. Many of these are digitized. ● The Newberry Library in Chicago, IL has a collection of Photochroms, known as The W.H. Jackson Photochrom Print Collection, 1898-1906. Scope and content: 119 of the prints are 3.5 x 7 inches, 33 are 4.5 x 6.5 inches, and 35 are 5 x 7 inches. 31 are monochromatic, while the rest are in color. Most of the images are outdoor scenes. All but one of the prints have a publisher’s number and subject description printed at the lower left on the front or the back, and these numbers are used to organize the collection. Many are printed with “Detroit Photographic Co.” on the front lower right, some are printed “Copyright (date) by Detroit Photographic Co.” on front lower right, and a few say “Copyright, (date), by the Photochrom Co.” in that position. Bracketed dates in the inventory below reflect dates recorded on a listing supplied by the donor, but not printed on the actual item. 2 The listing provided by the donor identifies several of the images as being included in the following publication: Hughes, Jim, and William Henry Jackson. 1994. • Segment 25 of the Colorado Trail Starts at Little Molas Lake. Hikers
! COLORADO TRAIL (SECTION NORTHWEST OF LITTLE MOLAS LAKE), SILVERTON, COLORADO Segment 25 of the Colorado Trail starts at Little Molas Lake. Hikers (and mountain bikers) can also do day-trips on this part of the trail by starting from the Little Molas Lake parking area and heading northwest. The first part of this section of the Colorado Trail passes beneath Sultan Mountain and the Grand Turk. The views from this trail are spectacular, although the wildflowers aren't quite as nice as they were on the other two hikes we did in this area after this one (Coal Bank Pass and Snowdon Meadows). We had hoped to continue further along the trail than we did, but we were not yet aware how early in the afternoon thunderstorms can appear in this area (and the trail goes along an exposed ridge). ! ! Driving by the Hermosa Cliffs on our way north along the San Juan Skyway from Durango. ! " Engineer Mountain is visible for some distance on this drive. ! " This is the southwestern part of the ridge by Coal Bank Pass. ! " ! ! ! ! ! ! Looking southeast at what I think must be North Twilight Peak. Crater Lake should be in the small valley just to the left of the peak. ! " Looking north towards the North Lime Creek valley, which is just west of Sultan Mountain and the Grand Turk (which are two peaks visible in all three of my July 2017 trip reports from this area). ! " Looking north again, towards Molas Pass (right of center). ! " Looking northeast, with Snowdon Peak to the left in this photo (I am not sure what the peaks to the right of center and which are just barely visible in the background are called).

DESCRIRTORS *Federal Legislation: Legislators: Lobbying: Persuasive Discourse: *Photography: *Political Influences: *Recreation Legislation: United States History TDENTIFIERS *Jackson (William Henry): Photolonrnalism: *Yellowstone National Park ABSTRACT The photographs of William Henry Jackson taken during the 1971 survey of the Yellowstone region of Wyomingand Montana have often been cited as the first specific group of photographs used for successful persuasion.' Many historians credit Jackson's photographs is being the most influential factor in persuading Congress to designate the Yellowstone region as the nation's. first national park. But a closer examination of historical reports and congresSional accounts shows that these claims are exaggerated. Oral descriptions of the area from unofficial expeditions prior to the survey sounded unbelievable, but were consistent in many ways, thus lending the stories credibility before the Jackson photographs were taken. An article from a prominent newspaper applauding passage of the national park bill made no reference tOthe Jackson photographs. Jackson himself viewed his role as expedition photographer as supportive :,thee than primary. Although congressional members received the photographs as part of the Yellowstone lobbying effort, those members most influential in the passage of the'till were more likely persuaded by accounts from tamily, members in previous expeditions than by the photographs.

This is one of many related papers that were included in the 1968 NMGS Fall Field Conference Guidebook. Annual NMGS Fall Field Conference Guidebooks Every fall since 1950, the New Mexico Geological Society (NMGS) has held an annual Fall Field Conference that explores some region of New Mexico (or surrounding states). Always well attended, these conferences provide a guidebook to participants. Besides detailed road logs, the guidebooks contain many well written, edited, and peer-reviewed geoscience papers. These books have set the national standard for geologic guidebooks and are an essential geologic reference for anyone working in or around New Mexico. Free Downloads NMGS has decided to make peer-reviewed papers from our Fall Field Conference guidebooks available for free download. Non-members will have access to guidebook papers two years after publication. Members have access to all papers. This is in keeping with our mission of promoting interest, research, and cooperation regarding geology in New Mexico. However, guidebook sales represent a significant proportion of our operating budget. Therefore, only research papers are available for download. Road logs, mini-papers, maps, stratigraphic charts, and other selected content are available only in the printed guidebooks.
