• Mayer triumphed at Hamburg in 2014 for his first career title, clinching a final-set tiebreak in the championship match against then-No. 7 . He won his second of two career titles in the same city three years later, when he entered the 2017 main draw as a 138th-ranked and hoisted the trophy again. Mayer re-discovered the magic this year, improving his win-loss record at Hamburg to 15-2 after saving a match point against qualifier Jozef Kovalik in the semi-finals.

• Like Mayer, Basilashvili came into Hamburg with a losing record, having suffered a seven-match Tour-level losing streak earlier this season, which included two retirements due to a right shoulder injury. But after making it through the Hamburg qualifying, Basilashvili moved past seeded players and Pablo Carreno Busta in the earlier rounds, and then beat Nicolas Jarry in the semi-finals to reach his third career final and keep his hopes alive for a first singles title.

• In the doubles final, top seeds and Mate Pavic try to claim their fifth title of the year against last week’s Bastad champions and . Pavic won at Hamburg last year with , while Marach triumphed at Hamburg in 2011 with . By reaching the final, Marach and Pavic became the first team to qualify for the 2018 Nitto ATP Finals.

TOP 3 SEEDS LEAD HAMBURG FIELD INTO FRIDAY QUARTER-FINALS

• Only three seeded players made it into the German Tennis Championships 2018 quarter-finals, but they are the three Top 20 players who started the tournament. Heading the list is No. 1 seed and World No. 8 Dominic Thiem, who won his first two matches without dropping a set. Thiem leads the ATP World Tour in match wins in 2018, with 38 victories this year through his second-round win over . Thiem will face Nicolas Jarry for the first time in the quarter-finals. Chile’s Jarry, a first-time finalist at Sao Paulo this season, moved into the quarter-finals after No. 7 seed withdrew in advance of their second-round encounter, due to a left hip injury.

• No. 2 seed Diego Schwartzman, a Hamburg quarter-finalist for the second straight year, will meet his compatriot, defending champion Leonardo Mayer, in the last eight. Mayer has an excellent 13- 2 win-loss record at Hamburg over his career, as he has won both of his two career singles titles at the German Tennis Championships, hoisting the trophy in 2014 as well as last year. Schwartzman, though, seeks his second ATP World Tour 500 title of the year, after triumphing in Rio de Janeiro.

• No. 3 seed Pablo Carreno Busta reached the Hamburg quarter-finals for the first time after his second-round opponent, Aljaz Bedene, retired mid-match due to a lower back injury. Carreno Busta will take on Nikoloz Basilashvili, as the Georgian qualifier will try to reach his first Tour-level semi-final of the season after losing his three previous quarter-final matches of 2018. Also, in the only quarter-final featuring two unseeded players, qualifier Jozef Kovalik will play lucky loser Thiago Monteiro in a rematch of their final-round qualifying battle, which Kovalik won on Sunday.

TOP SEED THIEM TAKES ON MILLMAN IN HAMBURG SECOND ROUND

• Top seed Dominic Thiem will continue his quest for a third clay-court title of the year when he meets John Millman in the second round of the German Tennis Championships 2018 in Hamburg on Thursday. Thiem extended his clay-court record for the season to 27-6 after his first-round win over French teenager , and brings a 2-0 head-to-head record into his meeting with Millman. However, Australia’s Millman comes into Hamburg at a career-high ranking of No. 50, and has the experience of reaching his first ATP World Tour final earlier this year, at Budapest, on clay.

• No. 3 seed Pablo Carreno Busta has a familiar foe to contend with in the second round, as he takes on Aljaz Bedene. The two have met three times at Tour-level, each time on clay, and Bedene has emerged victorious twice, including a five-set win at Roland Garros in 2016. The third seed, though, won their most recent match, at Rome earlier this season. Carreno Busta is still looking for his first final of 2018; Bedene has one final appearance already this year, on clay at Buenos Aires.

• 2016 German Tennis Championships finalist opens Center Court on Thursday with his match against qualifier Nikoloz Basilashvili. Cuevas has a strong 11-5 win-loss record at Hamburg, also making the semi-finals in 2009 and the quarter-finals in 2015 (where he lost to ). Cuevas won his only prior meeting with Basilashvili, at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

DEFENDING CHAMP, YOUNG GERMANS ON CENTER STAGE IN HAMBURG

• Two young Germans will contest second-round matches at Hamburg on Wednesday. First, 23-year- old qualifier Daniel Masur picked up the first Tour-level win of his career over Top 50 compatriot , and will try for another against No. 2 seed Diego Schwartzman. World No. 12 Schwartzman attained several clay-court achievements this season, winning the Rio de Janeiro title and reaching the Roland Garros quarter-finals, and peaking at a career-high No. 11 ranking.

• Joining Masur in the second round is 17-year-old wild card Rudolf Molleker, who ousted 2014 Hamburg finalist and former World No. 3 David Ferrer for the second Tour-level win of his season and his career. Molleker sits at a career-high ranking of No. 272, having captured his first ATP Challenger Tour title in Heilbronn, Germany, in May. The teenager will face Slovakian qualifier Jozef Kovalik, who reached his first ATP World Tour semi-final at Sofia earlier this year.

• No. 8 seed meets lucky loser Thiago Monteiro for the second time this year, after Verdasco needed a final-set tiebreak to escape a struggle with in the opening round on Tuesday. Verdasco beat Monteiro in the first round at Buenos Aires earlier in the season.

• Finally, defending and two-time Hamburg champion Leonardo Mayer ends the Wednesday schedule with an intriguing encounter against former Top 10 player Gael Monfils. Mayer, who won the German Tennis Championships as a lucky loser last year, will face the Frenchman after Monfils stopped the winning streak of last week’s Umag titlist in the first round.

10 THINGS TO WATCH IN HAMBURG

1) Summer in Swing: The European clay-court circuit continues this week with ATP World Tour events in Hamburg and Gstaad, while the first hard-court event since March takes place in Atlanta. Roland Garros runner-up Dominic Thiem headlines the German Tennis Championships 2018.

2) Dominant Thiem: If Rafael Nadal is the king of clay, the 24-year-old Thiem is heir to the throne. Nadal is 50-2 on clay since April 2017 with losses to Thiem at 2017 Rome and 2018 Madrid. For his career, Thiem is 109-36 with eight titles on clay (.752) and 98-84 with two titles elsewhere (.538).

3) Big Strides: No. 2 seed Diego Schwartzman has achieved a new career-high ranking 17 times since 2017 began, peaking at No. 11 on 11 June 2018. The Roland Garros quarter-finalist is the highest-ranked player to stand 5-foot-7 or shorter since 5-foot-6 Harold Solomon was No. 10 on 27 July 1981. Schwartzman did not drop a set en route to the Rio de Janeiro title in February.

4) On the Surface: Like Schwartzman, No. 3 seed Pablo Carreno Busta is playing his 10th clay- court tournament of 2018. But the Spaniard is adept on other surfaces as well. His first two titles, maiden Grand Slam semi-final and only two ATP Masters 1000 semi-finals all came on hard courts.

5) Turning Point: No. 4 seed Damir Dzumhur ended 2017 on a 24-7 run, highlighted by his first two ATP World Tour titles at St. Petersburg and . But the 26-year-old Bosnian was 13-17 this season entering Antalya on 24 June. Dzumhur went on to win the third championship of his career.

6) No Place Like Home: Philipp Kohlschreiber of Germany has earned 30+ wins and enjoyed Top 50 finishes in each of the last 11 seasons. The key to Kohlschreiber’s success has come at home. The two-time Hamburg semi-finalist is 121-64 in Germany (.654) and 320-275 elsewhere (.538).

7) Sicilian Sensation: Marco Cecchinato broke through at Roland Garros to become Italy’s first Grand Slam semi-finalist in 40 years. The Budapest champion trailed by two sets in the first round before upsetting Carreno Busta, David Goffin and 2016 champion Novak Djokovic.

8) Back to the Breakthrough: Richard Gasquet bids for the biggest title of his career this week. The Frenchman reached his first of three ATP Masters 1000 finals as an 18-year-old at 2005 Hamburg. Gasquet returns for the first time since Hamburg became an ATP World Tour 500 event in 2009.

9) Tale of Two Mayers: Two rarities occurred at once when a pair of players ranked outside of the Top 100 and with the same last name reached the 2017 Hamburg final. Leonardo Mayer of Argentina, a 138th-ranked lucky loser, beat 101st-ranked Florian Mayer of Germany for his second Hamburg title. Both Mayers are back, with Florian set to make his final tournament appearance.

10) Dream Team: The greatest Austrian players of the 21st century will join forces for just the second time at the German Tennis Championships 2018. Thiem and former World No. 8 Jurgen Melzer received a wild card in doubles. They lost their only previous match as a team at 2016 Metz.
