It will be the first professional meeting between the two players. • Mayer triumphed at Hamburg in 2014 for his first career title, clinching a final-set tiebreak in the championship match against then-No. 7 David Ferrer. He won his second of two career titles in the same city three years later, when he entered the 2017 main draw as a 138th-ranked lucky loser and hoisted the trophy again. Mayer re-discovered the magic this year, improving his win-loss record at Hamburg to 15-2 after saving a match point against qualifier Jozef Kovalik in the semi-finals. • Like Mayer, Basilashvili came into Hamburg with a losing record, having suffered a seven-match Tour-level losing streak earlier this season, which included two retirements due to a right shoulder injury. But after making it through the Hamburg qualifying, Basilashvili moved past seeded players Philipp Kohlschreiber and Pablo Carreno Busta in the earlier rounds, and then beat Nicolas Jarry in the semi-finals to reach his third career final and keep his hopes alive for a first singles title. • In the doubles final, top seeds Oliver Marach and Mate Pavic try to claim their fifth title of the year against last week’s Bastad champions Julio Peralta and Horacio Zeballos. Pavic won at Hamburg last year with Ivan Dodig, while Marach triumphed at Hamburg in 2011 with Alexander Peya. By reaching the final, Marach and Pavic became the first team to qualify for the 2018 Nitto ATP Finals.
