It’s almost been a year since our lives were challenged by the pandemic, but I have a sense of hope. At CET, ThinkTV and SOITA, we’ve persevered and we’ve learned lessons that I know we will build on for our future. More than ever, we will remain committed to our work in education. Our priorities and strategies will focus on what we can do better to serve our young learners and families for the long term. We will leverage our trusted programming, robust educational tools and our use of technology to remain a vital resource to parents, students and teachers. We will also continue to look to our colleagues across Ohio to collaborate, create and assess statewide services that will supplement education beyond the pandemic and provide services to those at greatest risk. We also will continue our commitment to local programming. On April 11th, we will air our local production Yom HaShoah: Remembering for Tomorrow – Carrying Our Stories Forward, created in partnership with The Nancy & David Wolf Holocaust & Humanity Center, which showcases the stories of survivors and shines a light on the value of promoting human rights. Additionally, we will be airing three new shows from local producers – Long Story Short, The Bearded Lady Project: Challenging the Face of Science and Science Around Cincy. You can find more information about those shows later in this magazine. We also continue our work on The Dayton Arcade (Part Two), Let Ohio Women Vote, The Art Show and SHOWCASE with Barbara Kellar. Of course, all of this is possible because of your support. We just concluded our March membership campaign in Cincinnati and Dayton and it ended strong thanks to your support and we have our Summer Action Auction coming on April 9. We also have a wonderful community of donors – individuals and corporations – who continue to support the work we do. There’s a lot to look forward to this spring and many ways to connect and enjoy your Public Television stations! I am proud to be a part of an organization that continues to look for ways to connect – to our families, our students, our teachers and to you. For more than 50 years, Public Television has been committed to curious learners of all ages and CET and ThinkTV will continue to look for new ways to serve you even better in the future. • International Bestselling Author Harlan Coben Launches Indie with Red Production Company
INTERNATIONAL BESTSELLING AUTHOR HARLAN COBEN LAUNCHES INDIE WITH RED PRODUCTION COMPANY NEW U.S.-BASED PRODUCTION COMPANY DEVELOPING DRAMA SIX YEARS NEW YORK, March 8, 2016: Award-winning and number one international bestselling author Harlan Coben is launching his own independent production company, in partnership with one of the UK’s most successful producers, RED Production Company. Coben will be joint CEO alongside RED founder Nicola Shindler with STUDIOCANAL handling international distribution of the original content. Final Twist Productions, which will be based in the U.S., will develop contemporary, thrilling drama for American broadcast networks. The new company is already in development on a major returning drama series, Six Years, adapted from Coben’s bestselling novel of the same name. The ambitious series tells the story of Jake, a college professor who six years earlier watched the love of his life, Natalie, marry another man. But, when Natalie’s husband is murdered and Jake goes to find her, he discovers that the grieving widow is not Nathalie at all, but a woman he's never seen before. As Jake seeks to uncover the truth and find his lost love, his search takes him on a dark and unforeseeable journey that puts his very life at risk. “Nicola and I had such a terrific experience creating The Five for Sky One. I couldn’t be prouder of what we’ve made,” said Harlan Coben. “Final Twist Productions will take our American-British teamwork to the next level by bringing Nicola’s daring new outlook and producing style to the USA.” “It has been a privilege to work with Harlan on developing, producing and delivering his first original screenplay,” added Nicola Shindler.

IT IS RECOMMENDED THAT THE READER USE 2-PAGE VIEW (BOOK FORMAT WITH SCROLLING ENABLED) IN ACROBAT READER OR BROWSER. “EVEN’ING IT OUT – A NEW PERSPECTIVE ON THE LAST TWO YEARS OF “THE TWILIGHT ZONE” Television Series (minus ‘THE’)” A Study in Three Parts by Andrew Ramage © 2019, The Twilight Zone Museum. All rights reserved. Preface With some hesitation at CBS, Cayuga Productions continued Twilight Zone for what would be its last season, with a thirty-six episode pipeline – a larger count than had been seen since its first year. Producer Bert Granet, who began producing in the previous season, was soon replaced by William Froug as he moved on to other projects. The fifth season has always been considered the weakest and, as one reviewer stated, “undisputably the worst.” Harsh criticism. The lopsidedness of Seasons 4 and 5 – with a smattering of episodes that egregiously deviated from the TZ mold, made for a series much-changed from the one everyone had come to know. A possible reason for this was an abundance of rather disdainful or at least less-likeable characters. Most were simply too hard to warm up to, or at the very least, identify with. But it wasn’t just TZ that was changing. Television was no longer as new a medium. “It was a period of great ferment,” said George Clayton Johnson. By 1963, the idyllic world of the 1950s was disappearing by the day. More grittily realistic and reality-based TV shows were imminent, as per the viewing audience’s demand and it was only a matter of time before the curtain came down on the kinds of shows everyone grew to love in the 50s.

  • Martin Balsam and the Refining of Male Character Acting in American Films, 1957-1976 John Thomas Mcguire, Siena College
Man In A Hat: Martin Balsam and the Refining of Male Character Acting in American Films, 1957-1976 John Thomas McGuire, Siena College [email protected] Volume 8. 1 (2020) | ISSN 2158-8724 (online) | DOI 10.5195/cinej.2020.235 | http://cinej.pitt.edu Abstract This article attempts a definition at what constitutes “character acting” in mainstream cinema in the United States and argues that throughout the peak of his film career—roughly, 1957 through 1976--Martin Balsam refined the definition of male character acting in American film, a parameter previously established by such skilled practitioners as Eugene Pallette and Claude Rains. Balsam did this through his ability to portray what can be termed “a man in a hat” portrayals: tartly humorous, reliable, and sometimes authoritative supporting characters, usually wearing a chapeau. This is clearly seen in such performances as the private investigator in Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960) and most interestingly, a partner in an unusual subway hijacking in Joseph Sargent’s The Taking of Pelham One, Two, Three (1974). Keywords: Character acting, male, in film, United States; Martin Balsam; Academy Award for Best Performance by a Supporting Actor; Claude Rains; Alfred Hitchcock; 20th Century film acting. • The Passing of Minnie Minoso and Remembrances by His Sox Teammates
The Passing of Minnie Minoso and Remembrances by His Sox Teammates By Mark Liptak Posted Monday, March 2, 2015 From the time he arrived to make his White Sox debut on May 1, 1951 until his passing early Sunday morning March 1, 2015, Saturnino Orestes Armas (Arrieta) “Minnie” Minoso loved Chicago, the White Sox and baseball. Minoso, the first Latin player to appear for the White Sox, reportedly was 90 years old although many feel he was actually older when he passed away in his car. Minoso had gone out Saturday night for a friend's birthday party when he appar- ently fell ill and pulled over in the Lakeview neigh- borhood, according to police and family. He was found early Sunday morning unresponsive. Minoso’s story is one of overcoming hardship and prejudice first in Cuba where he was born and raised and then in his day-to-day dealings with life in the 1950’s in America. He changed people’s atti- tudes by always being courteous and showing a smile regardless of the circumstances. Minnie played 17 games with the Indians in 1949 Minoso was one of the original "Go-Go" boys. Photo credit Associated Press. and 1951 when he was acquired by the Sox in a three way deal also involving the Athletics. The deal was driven by Sox G.M. Frank “Trader” Lane upon the recommendation of manager Paul Richards. Richards had first seen Minoso play in San Diego in the Pacific Coast League and immediately pushed for his acquisition. When all was said and done, Phila- delphia sent Lou Brissie to Cleveland; Cleveland sent Sam Zoldak and Ray Murray to Philadelphia; the Athletics sent Paul Lehner to the White Sox, the White Sox sent Gus Zernial and Dave Philley to Philadelphia and the Indians sent Minoso to the South Side of Chicago.

NEWS FROM NORD AN UPDATE FOR OUR MEMBERS AND FRIENDS SUMMER 2013 CELEBRATING 30 YEARS: EMPOWERING THE RARE DISEASE COMMUNITY! Saluting the heroes of 1983, recognizing major milestones, and looking to the future. Drugs of “LimiteD COMMERCIAL VALue” On June 29, 1979, a task force chaired by Marion Finkel, MD, of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), published a report calling for measures to address what it perceived as a significant public health issue. The issue was that drugs “of limited commercial value” – for small patient populations – were not being developed. The members of the task force came mostly from FDA and the National Institutes of Health (NIH). All served as volunteers. The report they produced called for directing more resources toward the research, development, and distribution of drugs for people with rare diseases. This helped set the stage for events that ultimately resulted in the Orphan Drug Act. Continued on page 4 Abbey Meyers (seated center) with Sen. Orrin Hatch and Rep. I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.
