It took 7 years of labor, slowly clawing shovels of earth from the ground in a 363-mile trek across the wilderness of New York State. Through the use of many references, this paper attempts to describe this remarkable construction project. Additionally, it describes the early operation of the canal and its impact on the daily life on or near the canal‘s winding path across the state. -

"We", "Us", and "Our" refer to Canal & River Trust, including our employees and agents to whom these conditions apply, You agree to Canal and River Trust contacting emergency or rescue services if they feel the boat or crew is in danger and all fees to be "You" means the person or persons named in the booking confirmation, invoiced directly to you. "Boat" means the boat or vessel booked by you for a passage Passage may not be suitable for young children but children of all ages are through the Link, accepted provided that they are closely supervised at all times by a responsible adult. 4 CANALS AS AQUATIC CORRIDORS 4.1 INTRODUCTION The term 'corridor' can be used to describe two different situations. In the first, the corridor is simply a passage along which organisms travel. or along which propagules are dispersed. Thus, one can imagine a butterfly or a bird passing from one wood to another along a hedge, or a seed floating along a stream from one lake to another. The second situation is the corridor as a linear habitat in which organisms live and reproduce. This section of the report considers British canals as linear habitats for submerged and floating vascular plants. A study of the plants which have colonized canals is of interest for two reasons. Canals are of intrinsic importance, as they contain significant populations of many scarce or rare aquatic macrophytes. They are unstable habitats: if neglected they gradually become overgrown by emergent vegetation but if maintained and intensively used by boat traffic they also lose much of their botanical diversity (Murphy & Eaton 1983). The restoration of canals for pleasure boating has been a controversial issue in recent years, and the management of the Basingstoke Canal. in particular, has been a subject of heated debate (see Byfield 1990). Proposals to use canals as part of a national water grid may also need to be evaluated by conservationists, and a knowledge of the dispersal behaviour and colonizing ability of both native and alien species will be essential if the consequences of linking canals are to be predicted. 4.2 REPRODUCTION AND DISPERSAL IN THE AQUATIC ENVIRONMENT In considering aquatic corridors, an important feature of aquatic plants must be borne in mind: the prevalence of vegetative reproduction in many genera. -

Westcountry Rivers Trust Evidence Sharing Platform Trial Report and recommendations March 2016 The Evidence Sharing Platform trial is funded by the Defra Catchment Partnership Fund and the EU WaterLIFE programme Evidence Sharing Platform The Evidence Sharing Platform Project aimed to test online platforms to facilitate multi-way information sharing within the Environment Agency and between EA and the rest of the CaBA partnerships. In addition, through workshops and discussions, the Task & Finish Group established protocols, recommendations and guidance to enable community groups to more effectively input to River Basin Management Planning, an area where the EA and Defra have previously been taken to judicial review. Sharing of near real-time field work and monitoring plans to enable better coordination between CaBA partners will allow everyone involved to collaboratively deliver the updated river basin management plan in the most efficent fashion. Executive Summary In 2014/15 a number of organisations came together to trial the use of an online collaboration platform for increasing transparency of information sharing between partners involved in the Catchment Based Approach. The trial was part funded by the Catchment Partnership Fund, with match funding and time in kind from the Environment Agency, The Rivers Trust, Westcountry Rivers Trust, Ribble Rivers Trust and the Freshwater Biological Association. The Evidence Sharing Platform (ESP) Trial was set up to increase transparency and improve information sharing between all parties involved in the Catchment Based Approach (CaBA), and to ensure that local catchment plans and River Basin Management Plans are informed by the best available evidence. This report sets out the aims and objectives, technical issues encountered, solutions developed and recommendations for other CaBA partnerships wishing to adopt a similar approach. -

Lining a canal in the United Kingdom with a bituminous geomembrane M.TURLEY, Colas Limited, United Kingdom A GOSS, British Waterways ABSTRACT: As part of the continuing programme of improvements being carried out to the canal network in the UK by British Wa- terways, a section of the Llangollen canal in North Wales required relining due to leakage in the 200 year old structure. Engineers in British waterways’ headquarters in Leeds specified a bituminous geomembrane liner system, which enabled a simpler design to be adopted compared to other commonly used systems. Added complications on the site were the construction of a new concrete retain- ing wall along one bank and access for cattle from a pasture above the canal to the water by means of watering hole structures con- structed in concrete.
