  • Land-Use Efficiency in Shandong (China)
sustainability Article Land-Use Efficiency in Shandong (China): Empirical Analysis Based on a Super-SBM Model Yayuan Pang and Xinjun Wang * Department of Environmental Science and Engineering, Fudan University, Shanghai 200433, China; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected] Received: 20 November 2020; Accepted: 14 December 2020; Published: 18 December 2020 Abstract: A reasonable evaluation of land-use efficiency is an important issue in land use and development. By using a super-SBM model, the construction and cultivated land-use efficiency of 17 cities in Shandong from 2006 to 2018 were estimated and the spatial-temporal variation was analyzed. The results showed that: (1) The land use efficiency levels were quite different, and low-efficiency cities impacted the overall development process. (2) The efficiency values of construction land generally fluctuated and rose, meaning that room remains for future efficiency improvements. Cultivated land generally showed a high utilization efficiency, but it fluctuated and decreased. (3) The construction land-use efficiency was highest in the midland region, especially in Laiwu city, followed by the eastern region and Qingdao city, and the western region. The spatial variation in cultivated land presented a trend of “high in the middle, low in the periphery,” centered on Jinan and Yantai city. (4) Pure technical efficiency was the main restriction driving inefficient utilization in the western region, while scale efficiency played that role in the east. Based on the findings, policy suggestions were proposed to improve the land-use efficiency in Shandong and promote urban sustainable development. Keywords: land use; efficiency level; super-SBM model; Shandong Province; construction land; cultivated land 1.

The regional forest background annual mean AOT was 0.467 with a standard deviation of 0.339, (Std.) and variance of AOT in 17 cities (Fig.1) are presented in Table 1. which was much higher than the background continental AOT level of 0.10. Higher AOT values for the In order to better understand the AOT values in different cities, percent days with AOT≤0.5, 1.0≥AOT>0.5 and study region were mainly found in the spring and summer, especially from May to August, while the AOT>1.0 respectively in each cities were calculated (Fig.2). (a) (b) (c) (d) lowest mean aerosol values were seen in November and December. Urban areas all have obviously higher mean AOT values than the rural areas resulting from intense anthropogenic sources. Given that the forest background AOT represents the natural background level, anthropogenic emissions and C secondary aerosol generation contribute approximately 0.352 to the aerosol loading in this region.

Art Around the Belly: Tracing the Cultural Significance and Artistic Value of Belt Hooks in Ancient China by Kara Kaifang Ma A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Kara Kaifang Ma 2014 ! Art Around the Belly: Tracing the Cultural Significance and Artistic Value of Belt Hooks in Ancient China Kara Kaifang Ma Master of Arts Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto 2014 Abstract The belt hook was used to fasten garments in ancient China long before the existence of belt buckles or plaques. Its use first appeared more than five thousand years ago and can be prevalently observed in paintings, on statuettes, and even on the famous Terracotta Army. Although it was such a common personal ornament, little has been written on this subject. My thesis will explore, through excavation data, coupled by my research on the extensive collection of belt hooks at the Royal Ontario Museum, how the examination of these ancient Chinese ornaments can not only reveal the status and wealth of its wearer, but also the cultural complexities and social advancements of that time. ! ! ! !ii Acknowledgments I would like to express my deepest gratitude to Dr. Chen Shen, my supervisor and mentor, who’s expertise and passion for his field has led me to pursue a career in East Asian Studies. Thank you for always pushing me to do better, the completion of my Master’s would not have been possible without your continuing support, guidance, and encouragement.

FLATH Introduction For most people, the written texts of history are only pale reflections of the history they see in their everyday surroundings. An ancient building, a local museum, a statue in a park, or even a notable landscape can carry historical narratives in ways that are more immediate and lasting than any well-re- searched discourse on history. Yet these publicly accessible historical represen- tations are also highly selective in the subjects they portray. Visitors often leave with little more than an impression of the event, person, or place represented by the site, and perhaps a souvenir or T-shirt as evidence of their historical experience. So although the historical site is a poor representation of the actual past, the immediacy and stature of historical monuments and museums imbue them with a strong capacity to configure history in the present. This discussion considers how the past informs the present through the preserved and monumentally represented remains of provincial Chinese history. China, as we are frequently reminded, has the world’s longest continu- ous history and probably the greatest number of historical sites.
