The Bay of Bengal Initiative for Multi-Sectoral Technical and Economic Cooperation (BIMSTEC) is a regional multilateral organisation. HQ: BANGLADESH . Its members lie in the littoral and adjacent areas of the Bay of Bengal constituting a contiguous regional unity. Bay of Bengal (BoB) is the largest Bay in the World. It includes 7 countries = BBIN, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Thailand. BoB is the largest bay in the World. It has 1.5 billion, 21% of World's population and a GDP of 2.5 trillion. BIMSTEC was estbalished in 1997 in Bangkok. 1st Meet held at Bangkok in 2004. 2nd in Delhi, India in 2008. 3rd in 2014 in Naypyidaw, Myanmar. 4th Summit held in 2018 Kathmandu, Nepal. 2020 Summit was to be held in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Kathmandu Declaration, 2018 • It focusses on o Issue of Terrorism and Transnational organized crimes = great threat to international peace and security. o Connectivity among member nations - Trade, Economic, Digital, Export, People to People connectivity. • Called for identifying and holding accountable states and non-states entities that encourage, support or finance terrorism, provides sanctuaries to terrorists and falsely extol their virtues. • Establishment of the BIMSTEC Grid Interconnection - optimization of using energy resources in the region and promotion of efficient and secure operationn of power system. • This Kathmandu meet will be another milestone for India after the BRICS- BIMSTEC Outreach Summit that India hosted in 2016. • India will host the International Buddhist Conclave in 2020. • For research in Art and Culture in BoB, India would set up a Center for BoB Studies at Nalanda University. 3 Fast-Track EPFO Batch-2021 INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANIZATION (ILO) Established in 1919 by the Treaty of Versailles as an affiliated agency of the League of Nations. League of Nations was disbanded in 1946 and powers and functions of ILO transferred to United Nations . Became the first affiliated specialized agency of the United Nations in 1946. Headquarters: Geneva, Switzerland Received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1969. o For improving peace among classes. o Pursuing decent work and justice for workers. o Providing technical assistance to other developing nations. The organization has played a key role: o Ensuring labour rights during the Great Depression of 1929. o Decolonization process. o The creation of Solidarno?? (trade union) in Poland. o The victory over apartheid in South Africa. It is the only tripartite U.N. agency. It brings together governments, employers and workers of 187 member States, to set labour standards, develop policies and devise programmes promoting decent work for all women and men. BRICS SUMMIT: Established in 2006 Member Countries: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa • 10thSummit 2018 – Johannesburg, SouthAfrica • 11th Summit 2019 –Brazil • 12th Summit 2020- Saint Petersburg,Russia • It is an association of 5 major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. • All five are G-20 members. • Originally, BRICS was envisioned to usher in reforms in the global financial governance. • At a broader level, it was to pursue democratisation of international relations and provide developing nations a greater say in global governance. 4 Fast-Track EPFO Batch-2021 • The expanded agenda now includes several non-financial issues from climate change and terror to women empowerment, human trafficking and so on. • It represents over 40% of the world's population and accounts for 22% of global GDP. • The 11th summit of the grouping was held in Brasilia, Brazil. • Theme - 'Economic Growth for an Innovative Future' • 12th summit was scheduled to take place in July 2020 in Saint Petersburg, Russia. • Theme – BRICS Partnership for Global Stability, Shared Security and Innovative Growth • 13th Summit - India • Yet to take place • Theme for XIII BRICS Summit – “BRICS@15: Intra-BRICS Cooperation” G 20 SUMMIT: • It was established in 2003, HQ: Cancun, Mexico. • Member Countries: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy , Japan, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea, Turkey, United Kingdom, United States, European Union • Background: It was started in 1999 as a meeting of Finance Ministers and Central Bank Governors in the aftermath of the Southeast Asian (Tiger economies) financial crisis. Key Objectives- • The Group of Twenty (G20) is the premier forum for its members’ international economic cooperation and decision-making. • It is deliberating forum for the governments and central bank governors from 20 major economies on economic issues and other important development challenges. 5 Fast-Track EPFO Batch-2021 • In 2008, the first G20 Leaders’ Summit was held in Washington DC, US. The group had played a key role in responding to the global financial crisis. • It comprises total 19 countries plus the European Union (EU), representing 85% of global GDP, 80% of international trade, 65% of world’s population. Its members include Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, China, India, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, South Korea, Mexico, Saudi Arabia, Russia, Turkey, South Africa, UK, US and EU. • It was established for studying, reviewing, and promoting high-level discussion of policy issues pertaining to the promotion of international financial stability. India Specific- • India is a founding member of G-20 • 2018 – Argentina, Buenos Aires • 2019 – Japan (14thmeeting) • 2020 – SaudiArabia • 2021- Osaka,Japan • 2022 – India G 7 SUMMIT: • Established on 1975 • The Group of Seven (G7) is an informal bloc of industrialized democracies— Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States—that meets annually to discuss issues such as global economic governance, international security, and energy policy. • Russia belonged to the forum from 1998 through 2014—then the Group of Eight (G8)—but was suspended after its annexation of Crimea in March of that year. It has 67 members from the Asia Pacific region. This bank was modeled on the lines of the world bank. Japan holds the largest share in ADB with 15.677%, followed by U.S.A (15.567%), China (6.473%), and India (5.812%). The aim of the ADB is social development by reducing poverty in the Asia Pacific with inclusive growth, sustainable growth, and regional integration. This is carried out through an 80% investment in the public sector. ADB invests in infrastructure, health, public administration system, helping nations to reduce the impact of climate change and to manage natural resources. • 51st 2018 – Manila,Philipines • 52nd 2019 – Nadi, Fiji • 53rd 2020- Incheon, Republic of Korea NATO Summit: • NATO stands for the North Atlantic Treaty Organization which is also called the North Atlantic Alliance. • It is an intergovernmental military alliance based on the North Atlantic Treaty which was signed on 4 April 1949. • The organization constitutes a system of collective defence whereby its member states agree to mutual defence in response to an attack by a non-member external party. • NATO’s headquarters are located at Boulevard Leopold III in the city of Brussels, Belgium, where the Supreme Allied Commander resides. Even though World War 2 had come to an end, the deteriorating relations between two former allies, the United States and the USSR would eventually lead to the Cold War. • The USSR sought to expand its influence in Europe through the spread of communism, while the US saw the ideology of the USSR as a threat to its way of life. Hence it saw the need to form NATO. NATO Members NATO has 30 member countries with Montenegro as its newest member. It became a part of NATO in 2017.
