This paraphrase from Shakespeare'sAs YouLike It is one of many dramatic references or conventions that Shelley's first-person narrator employs in writing her epistolary memoir. Indulging an excessively introspective sensi- bility, Mathilda constructs her autobiography as a dramatic tragedy that reveals an egocentric view of life as a stage on which she, a tragic actress,performs the leading role as an incest victim.2 "All the world's a stage" may indeed be an apt metaphor to describe life; however, Shelley's text suggests that, if the metaphor loses its analogic function, as it does for Mathilda, the result can be disastrous.
