Last Game: The Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (20-29) fell to the Mississippi Braves (22-27) by an 8-4 score in the fourth game of the five-game series at Trustmark Park on Saturday night. Jacksonville right-handed starting Cody Poteet (2-5) suffered his second straight loss, working two and two-thirds innings where he allowed a season- high seven runs (all earned) on eight hits with a walk and two . Mississippi right-handed starting pitcher Andres Santiago (3-0) earned the victory with seven innings of work where he allowed a run on five hits with no walks and eight strikeouts. The M-Braves started the scoring in the first with a two-run double by Tyler Marlette to lead 2-0. Mississippi added a run when an error by Jacksonville shortstop Mason Davis brought home Travis Demeritte to put the lead at 3-0. Mississippi doubled the lead in the next inning, with Luis Valenzuela hitting an RBI double before Tyler Neslony’s two-run double put the lead at 6-0. After Alex Jackson started the third inning with a double, Luis Marte brought him home on an RBI single two batters later to grow the lead to 7-0. Monte Harrison got Jacksonville on the scoreboard to lead off the fourth inning, as he blasted his seventh home run of the season over the center field wall to put the score at 7-1. Mississippi quickly got the run back, as Marlette hit an RBI single in the bottom of the fourth to put the Braves advantage at 8-1. Harrison drove in his second run of the game in the eighth inning on an RBI single to put the score at 8-2. Graves made two rehab starts with the Hammerheads, going 0-1 with a 6.43 ERA in his seven innings of work. Graves started the season on Miami’s 60-day disabled list due to a left oblique strain. Graves pitched in three games for the Marlins during spring training before his injury. Graves was selected by the Marlins from the in the Major League phase of the 2017 . Graves has pitched above the Double-A level in his career, and he was originally selected by the A’s in the third round of the 2014 draft from the University of Missouri.

The Goal? A Series Win: With the Jumbo Shrimp and M-Braves splitting the first four games of this series, today brings a rubber match to determine the series winner. This is only the second rubber match of the season for the Jumbo Shrimp, as they won their previous winner-take series Game Five on April 25 winning 4-2 over the Tennessee Smokies on the road. The Jumbo Shrimp are 4-5 in terms of series wins and losses, including a mark of 2-3 in road series so far this season.

Home Run Harrison: MLB.com’s No. 1 Miami Marlins Monte Harrison has homered twice in this series against the M-Braves, and now leads Jacksonville with seven home runs this season. Harrison is tied with New Orleans’ Jonathan Rodriguez for the Marlins organizational lead in homers, and he hit 21 last year with Brewers.

Norwood Streaking: John Norwood carries a seven-game hitting streak into today’s game against the M-Braves. Over his streak, Norwood is hitting .391 (9-for- 23) with five runs batted in (all during this series). Norwood has hit safely in eight of the last 10 games, and is hitting .313 with 7 RBI in the past 10 games.

Gotta Southern League Player of the Week: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp outfielder Cade Gotta has been named the Southern League Player of the Week for May 14-20, announced by the league office on Monday morning. Gotta over the past week hit .423 (11-for-26) with eight extra-base hits, five runs batted in, four doubles, three triples (in three consecutive games from May 14-16), a home run, three walks, and seven runs scored. Over the past week, Gotta led the league in extra-base hits (8), total bases (24), triples (3), slugging percentage (.923), on-base plus slugging percentage (1.406), and was tied for the league lead in doubles (4). Gotta has continued his strong play into this series against the M-Braves going 6-for-12 with an RBI, a double, and four runs scored.

Goodbye Braves: Today’s game wraps up the first of four series this season and the only one in the first half of the year between the Jumbo Shrimp and the Mississippi Braves. Jacksonville will make a return trip to Trustmark Park to begin the second half from June 21-26, and the Braves will visit Jacksonville from August 8-12 as well as the final series of the year from August 30 to September 3. Last season the Jumbo Shrimp posted a winning 12-8 record against the Braves, going 5-5 in 10 games at Trustmark Park, then going 7-3 against the Braves in Jacksonville.

SMOKIES LOSS: Duval suffered his second straight loss and fourth of the season as he fell to the Tennessee Smokies on Friday May 11 at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville. Duval worked six innings where he allowed four runs (all earned) on five hits with a walk and a season-high eight strikeouts as Jacksonville lost the finale of the series 7-2. All of the runs that Duval allowed came in the top of the second inning.

MINOR LEAGUE CAMPING PROJECT: During this past offseason, Duval lived in an RV given to him by his mom to use as a home, he was trying to avoid signing a lease for the offseason. Duval lived in the RV with his friend and trainer Kevin Mixon, with the 29- foot motorhome parked just outside of Salinas, California and near their training facility. The RV did not have a shower or toilet, but found ways to make it doable. Duval detailed his offseason in the RV with a blog “The Minor League Offseason Camping Project” which can be found online at minorleaguecampingproject.wordpress.com., and he has continued blogging into the 2018 season, giving insights on his experience as a Jumbo Shrimp pitcher.

#43 MAX DUVAL RHP | 6-5, 235 lbs | Born: April. 15, 1991 in San Luis Obispo, California. 27 years old. Signed by the Marlins as a minor league free agent on July 28, 2017. 2017 Highlights: Started the season pitching for the Evansville Otters in the independent Frontier League. With Evansville, Duval went 8-2 with a 2.28 ERA in 14 starts, striking out 113 batters in 87 innings of work and he won the 2017 Frontier League Brian Tollberg Award for Most Valuable Pitcher, and he was also a Frontier League All-Star. After he signed with the Marlins on July 28, he went 4-0 with a 2.09 ERA in six starts for the Single-A Greensboro Grasshoppers. Came within two outs of a seven inning perfect game on August 9, 2017. He retired the first 19 batters he faced before ultimately allowing a run on two hits with seven strikeouts in a complete game win. 2016 Highlights: Started the season pitching for the Evansville Otters in the independent Frontier League, where he was 4-1 with a 4.40 ERA in seven starts. Signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks as a minor league free agent on June 23, 2016. Pitched at four different levels of the Diamondbacks organization, making one relief outing with High-A Visalia where he was 1-0 with a 9.64 ERA, going 2-6 with a 3.02 ERA in 10 starts for the Single-A Kane County Cougars, then with Short Season Hillsboro had no wins or losses and a 7.36 ERA in two appearances and one start, then also two appearances and a start for the AZL Diamondbacks, going 1-1 with a 1.13 ERA in two appearances and one start. All of his moving around different affiliates mainly happened in a 14-day span in late June and early July. 2015 Highlights: Split the season pitching in the Frontier League, making four appearances with the Shaumberg Boomers where he had no wins or losses and a 13.50 ERA. He also pithed for the Frontier Greys, where he was 1-3 with a 3.51 ERA in 15 appearances and eight starts. The Greys were a team that played strictly road games in the Frontier League, hence the name Greys after the traditional road jersey color. 2014 Highlights: Duval made his debut pitching for the Schaumburg Boomers in the independent Frontier League, with no wins or losses and a 6.75 ERA in three relief outings. College: Started college career at Cuesta College before transferring to Hawaii for his junior season. At Hawaii in 2012 he hit .186 with one home run and 18 RBI as an infielder. At the plate in 2013, Duval hit .192 with no homers and 3 RBI. He also pitched that season, with no wins or losses and a 6.48 ERA in six games in relief. After college considered quitting baseball but mom encouraged him to keep playing, which landed him in independent baseball to give pitching a real chance.
