The Southern Region includes: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Puerto Rico, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and Virginia. The region has several large land-grant universities with influence beyond the region and want to play a significant role in the well-being of the population. There is an urgent need for the people of the South to increase their consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables. With the exception of Florida (26.4%), Virginia (27.2%), and North Carolina (29.4%), obesity prevalence in the South is over 30% and ranks number 1 in obesity and diabetes. Mississippi and Virginia reported over 35% of their population, as obese. The current trend nationwide is a decrease in consumption of fresh fruits and vegetables, due partly to an increase in consumption of processed foods. In addition, in the South, most consumers do not know the benefits of organic foods yet the market trends for organic food production and consumption is increasing everywhere but the South. The U.S. organic sales reached $52.5 billion in 2018 and represented 6.3% over the previous year. The organic food sales on the other hand reached $47.9 billion with 5.9% increase over 2017. Producers and market participants in the South should, take therefore advantage of the production and marketing of organic fruits and vegetables in order to increase producers’ and market participants’ income. The Southeast United States has favorable rainfall for agriculture and has a suitable climate for food production. The abundant rainfall and long growing seasons of the Southeast, though favorable for crop production, present some unique challenges to organic production. In the South, environmental conditions are favorable for rapid mineralization of organic crop residues, disease outbreaks, weed competition, and insect proliferation. Thus, for a successful organic farming enterprise, a special attention to agro-ecosystem research is required. Such a research must address pest and disease control, soil/soil health, and appropriate crop varieties for the South to include incorporation of cover crops into rotations, improved and sustainable utilization of animal manures to eliminate the need for inorganic agro-chemicals, and development of IPM techniques for important common vegetable crops. These activities fit well into the land-grant mission of instruction, research, and service. To conduct this research work, however, land-grant institutions in the South must attract federal dollars to develop research programs that address production and consumption needs of constituents in the South. During the past decade (2009 – 2019), the Organic Research and Education Initiative Program funded 183 proposals throughout the four SARE regions; out of this number, only 33 were funded in the Southern SARE region and the vast majority of the proposals dealt with pest issues. In 2009, only two proposals tallying 1.2 million were funded in the Southern SARE region whereas six and eight proposals tallying $7.5 and $7.9 million were 4 funded in the north central and the northeastern regions, respectively, during the same period. The same trend persisted through 2014 with two proposals funded for a total of $1.5 million for the Southern SARE and seven proposals funded at $9.6 million for the North Central SARE region. In 2015, 2016, and 2017, the Southern SARE region was very competitive in attracting federal research dollars, but in 2019 only two proposals totaling $2.1 million were funded in the Southern SARE region, whereas nine were funded in the North Central SARE region for nearly $12 million. Moreover, state-level support for organic agriculture in the South is not strong compared with state support in Minnesota, Wisconsin, Washington, California, Iowa, and Vermont where states have a strong commitment to organics and offer countless services such as education trainings, informal advice to organic growers, technical assistance, conferences, organic advisory committees, and language access. To strengthen organic farming activities in the South, we must attract more federal research dollars, educate consumers and producers, show commitment to organic farming, enact policies that encourage organic transition, increase state research support for universities, and offer technical trainings for county officers and form specialized organic county personnel to guide organic growers. Additional Notes: Southern region soils tend to have lower inherent fertility than soils in cooler climates. During the discussion following the presentation, it was noted that the Specialty Crop Block Grant awards in the Southern region include few projects that pertain to organic systems.     Risk assessment of Gratiana boliviana (Chrysomelidae), a potential biocontrol agent of tropical soda apple, Solanum viarum (Solanaceae) in the USA J. Medal,1,2 D. Gandolfo,3 F. McKay3 and J. Cuda1 Summary Solanum viarum (Solanaceae), known by the common name tropical soda apple, is a perennial prickly weed native to north-eastern Argentina, south-eastern Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay, that has been spreading at an alarming rate in the USA during the 1990s. First detected in the USA in 1988, it has already invaded more than 1 million acres (ca. 400,000 ha) of improved pastures and woody areas in nine states. Initial field explorations in South America for potential biocontrol agents were initiated in June 1994 by University of Florida researchers in collaboration with Brazilian and Argentinean scientists. The leaf beetle Gratiana boliviana (Chrysomelidae) was evaluated as a potential biocontrol agent of tropical soda apple. The only known hosts of this insect are S. viarum and Solanum palinacanthum. Open field experiments and field surveys were conducted to assess the risk of G. boliviana using Solanum melongena (eggplant) as an alternative host. In an open field (choice-test) planted with tropical soda apple and eggplant there was no feeding or oviposition by G. boliviana adults on eggplant. Surveys conducted (1997–2002) of 34 unsprayed fields of eggplant confirmed that this crop is not a host of G. boliviana. Based on these results, the Florida quarantine host-specificity tests, the open field tests in Argentina, and the lack of unfavourable host records in the scientific literature, we concluded that G.

To develop a bioherbicide agent that could be integrated with mowing, a recommended management practice for TSA, we screened several isolates of bacterial pathogens of Solanaceous plants and established that a Ralstonia solanacearum (=Pseudomonas solanacearum) (RS) isolate (10 Q, Race 1), originally from tomato, was capable of killing TSA without affecting tomato. RS is a xylem-invading, wilt-causing pathogen that when applied to cut main stems of TSA prevented regrowth and killed TSA plants under greenhouse conditions. To determine the effectiveness of this model bacterial bioherbicide agent under field conditions, a novel application method using a wet- blade mower was tested. Whereas wet-blade systems are used to deliver chemical herbicides and plant growth regulators to target weeds while mowing, none has been tested to deliver a biocontrol agent. We used the Burch Wet BladeTM mower system (BWB) and conducted the study in a pasture with 18% TSA coverage.

In the greenhouse, both the 20% and 40% vermicompost substitution rates decreased damage by cucumber beetles to cucumber foliage and hornworms to tomato foliage significantly.

    Hornworms (Order: Lepidoptera, Family: Sphingidae) Tomato hornworm (Manduca quinquemaculata (Haworth)) Tobacco hornworm (Manduca sexta (Linnaeus)) Description: Adult: These two species are similar in appearance. Both are large moths with a wingspan of 80 to 130 mm. The front wings are larger and much longer than the hind wings. Both species are grayish-brown or dull-gray moths with the abdomen marked by a series of orange-yellow spots down each side (six paired spots on the tobacco hornworm and 5 paired spots on the tomato hornworm). The abdomen tapers to a point. Immature stages: Eggs are spherical to oval and 1.25 to 1.5 mm in diameter. They are light green or yellow when laid and turn white at maturity. The larva is cylindrical, with 5 pair of prolegs (4 abdominal plus anal prolegs) and three pair of thoracic legs. Tobacco hornworm adult. Young larvae are yellowish-white but turn green with white diagonal markings on each side of abdominal segments. The most striking characteristic of these larvae is the presence of a thick pointed structure or ‘horn’ projecting backward from the top of the last abdominal segment. Last instar larvae are large, averaging about 8 cm in length. The large brown to reddish-brown pupae (45-60 mm long) possess a pronounced maxillary loop, which looks similar to a flattened handle on a teacup. Biology: Life cycle: There are likely 2 to 4 generations of these pests in Tobacco hornworm larva with characteristic diagonal Georgia. Both species overwinter in the pupal stage. Baldwin1* Abstract Background: Plant-mediated RNAi (PMRi) silencing of insect genes has enormous potential for crop protection, but whether it works robustly under field conditions, particularly with lepidopteran pests, remains controversial. Wild tobacco Nicotiana attenuata and cultivated tobacco (N. tabacum) (Solanaceae) is attacked by two closely related specialist herbivores Manduca sexta and M. quinquemaculata (Lepidoptera, Sphingidae). When M. sexta larvae attack transgenic N. attenuata plants expressing double-stranded RNA(dsRNA) targeting M. sexta’s midgut-expressed genes, the nicotine-ingestion induced cytochrome P450 monooxygenase (invert repeat (ir)CYP6B46-plants) and the lyciumoside-IV-ingestion induced β-glucosidase1 (irBG1-plants), these larval genes which are important for the larvae’s response to ingested host toxins, are strongly silenced. Results: Here we show that the PMRi procedure also silences the homologous genes in native M. quinquemaculata larvae feeding on irCYP6B46 and irBG1-transgenic N. attenuata plants in nature. The PMRi lines shared 98 and 96% sequence similarity with M. quinquemaculata homologous coding sequences, and CYP6B46 and BG1 transcripts were reduced by ca. 90 and 80%, without reducing the transcripts of the larvae’s most similar, potential off-target genes. Conclusions: We conclude that the PMRi procedure can robustly and specifically silence genes in native congeneric insects that share sufficient sequence similarity and with the careful selection of targets, might protect crops from attack by congeneric-groups of insect pests.
