700 CLUB...With his goal in the first period against New Jersey 10/14, Joe Pavelski (320g, 380a) registered his 700th career NHL point. Pavelski became the fifth player in NHL history drafted 200th or later to amass 700 points over an NHL career (D. Taylor, 1,069 pts; H. Zetterberg, 960 pts; P. Demitra, 768 pts; S. Sullivan, 747 pts). Pavelski also became the third Sharks player to registered 700 points or more with the franchise (P. Marleau, 1,082; Joe Thornton, 974). Pavelski is six games from 900 career NHL games, and would become the 13th player to achieve the mark drafted 200 or later.

KANE'T BE BEAT...Evander Kane scored the opening goal of the 2018-19 regular season for the Sharks. Since his debut with the Sharks on 2/27 vs EDM, Kane has buried the puck 13 times in 23 total games, while adding six assists for 19 points. Kane leads all Sharks skaters in goals during that span and ranks T-sixth in goals among Western Conference players.

YOUNG MONEY...With his four assists on 10/9 @ PHI, Kevin Labanc became the youngest Sharks player in franchise history to log four assists in a single game (22 years, 301 days). Only four players in Sharks history have recorded four assists while also earning a +4 rating. He also tied a franchise record for most assists in a single game, set 20 times and last achieved by Joe Pavelski 3/15/11 @ DAL. Labanc set a personal best in assists in a single game, while recording his eighth career multi-assist contest, three of which he earned three assists or more. It was Labanc's second career four point contest.

A JUMBO LEAP...Joe Thornton is within reach of several key milestones atop the all-time NHL list. Entering tonight's contest 'Jumbo' Joe is five games from 1,500 career NHL games and would become the 19th skater in NHL history to appear in 1,500 contests. On the way to 1,500 NHL games, Thornton has tied Phil Housley (1,495) and would surpass Mike Modano (1,499) for 20th and 19th on the list respectively. Thornton needs two assists to tie Mario Lemieux (1,033) for 11th on the all-time assists list and is 29 points from Teemu Selanne (1,457) for 15th on the NHL's all-time points list. Among personal career milestones, Thornton is three goals from 400 career NHL goals.

KILLER INSTINCT...Through six games, the Sharks have tallied three shorthanded goals. All three came in the first five games of the season, marking the third time in franchise history the club has recorded three disadvantage goals in the first five games, last occurring during the 2008-09 season. Currently, the Sharks lead the NHL in shorthanded strikes and are T-second in SHG within the last two seasons (11).

BIG EAST...Starting with the Islanders on 10/8, the Sharks will face 10 opponents in the Eastern Conference over their next 12 games (West Teams: NSH, 10/23, ANA 10/28). In 2017-18, the Sharks went 16-13-3 in 32 games against Eastern Conference teams. San Jose is 1-2-1 this season vs. Eastern Conference teams.

DOMINANT DUO…On September 13, general manager Doug Wilson traded for two-time Norris Trophy Winner Erik Karlsson to bolster up the blueline. Karlsson now joins Brent Burns as active Sharks to have won the Norris Trophy in their career and are the only active club with multiple active recipients of the award. The Sharks become the ninth NHL team with multiple Norris Trophy winners in their lineup for a game, and the first since Scott Niedermayer and Chris Pronger with the in 2006-07 to 2008-09. With their combined effort on 10/9 @ PHI on Tomas Hertl's goal, Karlsson and Burns became the first pair of former Norris Trophy winners to combine on a goal during a regular-season game since Niedermayer and Pronger on 3/31/09 (w/ ANA). The Sharks hold the leading assist and point-getters among defensemen since the start of the 2013-14 season (Karlsson, 275 assists and 358 points; Burns 223 assists and 330 points). No other defenseman in the NHL has more than 300 points and both Burns and Karlsson rank first and third respectively in goals scored since the 2013-14 season.

MODEL OF CONSISTENCY…Since being named the team’s general manager on May 13, 2003, Doug Wilson has strategically built the San Jose Sharks into one of the ’s top franchises through strong drafting, shrewd trades and timely free agent signings. TONIGHT’S GAME SABRES at SHARKS • This is the first of two meetings between the Sabres and Sharks this season. • Next meeting: Tuesday, Nov. 7 in Buffalo • Last meeting: San Jose defeated Buffalo 3-2 in Buffalo on Oct. 28, 2017 • The Sabres are 6-3-1 in their last 10 games vs. the Sharks; 6-3-1 on the road • This is the 40th game all-time between Buffalo and San Jose; Buffalo has a 24-9-6 series record. • The Sabres are 7-7-5 on the road against the Sharks all-time.

THIS DAY IN SABRES HISTORY • The Sabres are 10-5-4 all-time on October 18. • October 18, 1970: Gerry Meehan scores the first ever Sabres goal at Buffalo Memorial Auditorium at 5:48 of the second period against Pittsburgh. • October 18, 2003: Mika Noronen stops all 20 Flames shots to record his second career shutout in a 2-0 Sabres win at Calgary.

THINGS YOU SHOULD KNOW • Tonight’s game is the third game of a five-game Pacific Division road trip that continues on Saturday at Los Angeles. • After San Jose came away with a pair of 3-2 wins last October, the Sabres are looking to avoid losing four straight games to the Sharks after having gone 10-0-1 in the previous 11 matchups between the teams. • Carter Hutton is 4-1-1 in his career against the Sharks, with a .955 save percentage and a 1.32 goals-against average. • Kyle Okposo has 14 points (5+9) in 12 career games against San Jose. • Jack Eichel has six points (1+5) in six career games against the Sharks, including at least a point in each of his last four. • Vladimir Sobotka has eight points (3+5) in his last eight games against San Jose. • Jason Pominville has points (3+2) in each of his last four games against San Jose. • Conor Sheary has three points (1+2) in three career games against the Sharks.

A FRESH FACE • On Oct. 4 vs. Boston, Rasmus Dahlin (18 years, 175 days) became the second-youngest player ever to appear in a game with the Sabres, behind only fellow No. 1 pick Pierre Turgeon (18 years, 41 days on Oct. 8, 1987 vs. Minnesota). • Dahlin skated 22:37 in his debut, marking the highest ice time recorded by a Sabres player making his NHL debut and the 21st- highest ice time by any NHL player in his first game since the league began tracking ice time in the 1997-98 season. • With his assist on Oct. 11 vs. Colorado, Dahlin became the second-youngest player (18 years, 175 days) in franchise history to record a point, behind only Turgeon (18 years, 44 days on Oct. 11, 1987 vs. Washington). • Dahlin scored his first NHL goal on Oct. 13 at Arizona, becoming the second-youngest player (18 years, 183 days) in franchise history to score, behind only Turgeon (Oct. 21, 1987 vs. Hartford). • He was the youngest defenseman in 23 years to score an NHL goal. His goal came exactly 34 years after Doug Bodger (18 years, 117 days) became the youngest defenseman in the expansion era (since 1967-68) to score his first NHL goal (Oct. 13, 1984). • With the goal, he also became the third-youngest defenseman in NHL history to record a game-winner, trailing only Craig Wolanin of the New Jersey Devils (12/9/85 at Minnesota) and Red Garrett of the New York Rangers (12/25/42 at Detroit).

CAPTAIN JACK • After being named on Oct. 3, Jack Eichel became the 19th full-season captain in franchise history and the 28th player to wear the captain’s “C” for at least a one-month period for the Sabres. • At 21 years of age, Eichel is the youngest captain in Sabres history, passing Jim Schoenfeld, who served as the team’s captain as a 23-year-old in the 1975-76 season.
