AWARD-WINNING No. 75 Autumn 2007 CAMPAIGN CAMPAIGN FOR FOR REAL ALE REAL ALE www.camrabristol.org.uk PPIIINNNTSTSTS WWWEEESSSTT PPPMulti-award-winning newsletter of the Bristol & District Branch of CAMRA, the CampaignTT Tfor Real Ale From Brewery Tap to Colston Yard What a difference a year makes! Substitute one word, and the line from the old song What a difference a day makes seems apt when applied to the history of the ex-Smiles Brewery Tap. Many local people, including Bristol CAMRA members, were greatly shocked and bewildered at the wanton destruction which took place in July last year. A year on and we were delighted to hear that Butcombe Brewery had accepted the challenge of creating their own city- centre showpiece on the site of the former Tap. It is an exciting project for them, being their first ‘new-build’ outlet, and very different from their other two Bristol pubs, The Bell in Stokes Croft and The Prince of Wales in Westbury-on-Trym. This new venture, to be called ‘Colston Yard’, will be much larger than its predecessor, the trading floor occupying 2,200 square feet, with the basement housing the kitchens, cellar, etc., The wanton vandalism inflicted on the Brewery Tap by being of similar size. There will be a traditional bar selling, we are previous owners just a year ago Photo by Richard Brooks promised, a superb range of cask beers, alongside a number of authentic imported beers and lagers. A separate grill/restaurant is commenced, is expected to take up to four months with an also planned.

FREE Issue 147 Oct/Nov 2012 “Cheers!” Top row: THE EXETER ARMS, THE COACH & HORSES Bottom row: THE FLOWER POT, THE PEACOCK, THE ALEXANDRA Good Beer Guide details and more inside...! GOOD BEER GUIDE LAUNCHED - 5 new for Derby CAMRA has launched its 2013 Edition of the Good Beer Guide and unlike certain other local media we salute those new additions from Derby.... AS PROUD AS A PEACOCK Roger & Penny Myring are certainly no strangers to the Good Beer Guide having spent 12 years in it while they were licensees of the Smithfield but they are still proud of their achievement in getting the Peacock back into the guide for the first time in 15 years. Always known for their exceptional beer quality at the Smithy they have now transferred those skills to the Peacock were up 9 Real Ales can be tried from both the handpump and straight from the cask as well as Two Real Ciders/Perries. Also transferred from the Smithy were the ever popular Blues, Booze and BBQ’s evenings throughout the Summer and the famous Beer Festival which always was an end of season highlight. This attractive 18th century stone built, two roomed, roadside pub has certainly seen a new lease of life under their stewardship and it’s great to welcome them and the Peacock back to the guide once more. ALEXANDRA THE GREat What a great year it’s been for the Alex, a Derby CAMRA City Pub of the Year runner-up, the best mild pub award and now entry back into the 2013 Good Beer Guide after 2 years absence.

  • Nottingham CAMRA Timeline So, What Has Happened in the Years
Nottingham CAMRA Timeline So, what has happened in the years since CAMRA and its Nottingham Branch was formed? Year Events 1971 On the 16th of March, Michael Hardman, Graham Lees, Jim Makin and Bill Mellor formed the Campaign for Real Ale. Somewhat ironically the organisation’s birth took place in Kruger's Bar, Dunquin in the Dingle Peninsula of the Irish Republic.1 1972 Hardy’s Kimberley Brewery Limited changes its name to Hardys & Hansons 12 Limited, despite having merged with Hansons Limited in 1930. The Victoria Centre shopping centre is completed by Taylor Woodrow on the site of the old Victoria Railway Station, demolished in 1967.20 1973 The Nottingham Branch of CAMRA was formed on the 15th August at the Newcastle Arms in Basford. A Branch Committee was agreed upon and a vote held as to whether or not cheese sandwiches should be served at the next 2 meeting……….
