Willy Wonka (As a Female Character), a Narrator in the Velveteen Rabbit, Fiona in Once Upon a Time, and Most Recently Mary Lennox in the Secret Garden Kara von aschwege (edith) Kara is a BIG fan of multitasking, so she is beyond excited to be making four debuts at once with this production- Scottish Rite, Art In Relation, Children’s Theatre of Long Beach, AND her first Gilbert & Sullivan! Originally from Omaha, NE, Kara received a BFA in Music Theatre Performance from Viterbo University in La Crosse, WI. Her career has taken her from the Las Vegas Strip to Carnegie Hall and around the globe! Favorite roles include: Cathy (The Last 5 Years), Sara Jane Moore (Assassins), Beggar Woman (Sweeney Todd), Sally (You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown), and Smitty (H2$). When not on a theatrical stage, Kara enjoys playing the role of front woman in her San Diego-based rock cover band, CHEAP DATE, and vocalist in her acoustic duo, 3 Mile Radius, where she gets to play with her guitarist beau, Chris! Kara is a recent transplant from New York, where she was fortunate to have performed under Judith Clurman with Essential Voices USA for the NYPops: Rodgers & Hammerstein concert featuring Kelli O’Hara, Paulo Szot and Aaron Lazar. Thank you to the creative team for taking a chance on the new kid in town, to Steven Schnurman for keeping her voice in shape, and to her family for their endless support. For Dr. Benser, who knew I’d “make my money singing opera, because I’ve got those big cheeks with all that space for resonance.” ENJOY! www.karavonaschwege.com @kvonaschwege @3mileradiusduo anthony Barrios (Pirate “charles dontcomeBacK nunca”) Anthony is honored and humbled to have been accepted into this cast, and has learned a lot from the diverse experience of these brilliant performers. Anthony is a professional bassist, vocalist, and songwriter who studied at the Musician’s Institute in Hollywood. He built a solid repertoire of experience in rock bands, Delta Blues, and jazz ensembles in Los Angeles, eventually becoming a hired gun for tours featuring classic pop and soul groups. A fan of musicals since childhood and always up for a challenge, he finally made his way over to a musical theater debut in The Pirates of Penzance. When he is not performing he enjoys writing, woodworking, and being a father to Hazel. He informally continues studies in philosophy, law, and science while compiling material for at least two books. He is flattered that Sean and Becky would assume he would somehow figure out how to keep up with such accomplished talent. sara BraKe (constaBle “rocKy shore”) Sara Brake is so grateful to have the opportunity to appear in this production of Pirates of Penzance. This will be her sixth show with CTLB with previous roles in The Velveteen Rabbit, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat, The Secret Garden, and Twelfth Night. She will be attending Renaissance High School next year, so that she can further improve her acting and singing skills. The cast and crew have worked very hard on this amazing show and Sara hopes you enjoy it. sara cooPer(constaBle “Apollo shortcaKe”) studied music and theatre at the Orange County High School of the Arts, followed by conservatory with Irvine Valley College. She aims to attend Cal State Long Beach this coming year, for a major in Jazz Vocals. Sara enjoys sushi, ice cream, and long walks to rehearsal - especially if there are cats to pet along the way! She has had a blast being a policeman in this production, and hopes you have just as much fun watching the show! amBra costanza (daughter) Ambra was bitten by the acting bug as a Kindergartener when she played a caterpillar morphing into a butterfly in the elementary school production of Alice in Wonderland. Since that time, she has acted in over 16 school and CTLB productions. She has been the lead in several productions, including playing Willy Wonka (as a female character), a narrator in the Velveteen Rabbit, Fiona in Once Upon a Time, and most recently Mary Lennox in The Secret Garden. When she is not acting or studying for a part, Ambra enjoys participating in her school band as a percussionist, taking photographs, hanging out with friends, and dancing “en pointe” with her dance company. Ferdie directo (Pirate nauseous narwhalson) Ferdie is thrilled to be part of his second production with Art-In- relation, CTLB & the Scottish Rite Theatre. His first production was in The Christmas Carol where he played Mr. Fezziwig. Other favorite roles: The Emcee in 2 Queens Burlesque (South Coast Chorale), one of the FABULOUS 8 in Beyond The Fence:A tribute to Matthew Shepard (South Coast Chorale) and Milky White & Lucinda in Into The Woods (steampunk theatre company). Such a wonderful cast to work with, especially his bestie, Jon Peterson and his dear friend Andi Jones! And of course my fantastic pirate mateys! Thank you Jon, Jonas and Sean for letting me play in the sandbox again! Ella Dodgen HALANA FAUTSCH (DAUGHTER-WANDA) Halana is 14 years old in her final year of Middle School. Halana has had multiple lead roles, playing Veruca Salt in her 4th grade production of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, playing Alice in her 7th grade production of Alice in Wonderland Through the Looking Glass, and will be playing Jasmine in her 8th grade production of Aladdin. matthew Fernandez (Pirate one eyed- angelFish murray) began acting in middle school as King Azaz in “The Phantom Tollbooth”. During high school, he began to experiment with other forms of entertainment such as broadway and filming, being in a number of plays and student films during his four years as a students. As of now, he continues to search for more acting opportunities after appearing in theater shows and films at Santa Ana College and Long Beach. His previous work for CTLB was portraying Ruben in “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat”. Kelly Lynn George (Sergeant of Police) Kelly is honored and thrilled to share the stage with the talented cast of The Pirates of Penzance and is particularly excited to be playing the Sergeant of Police, one of her favorite characters in the show. Recent credits include: The Christmas Carol with Art in Relation / CTLB, Footloose (Glendale Centre Theater), and Flash Gordon (Underground Theater Company). She was also recently seen with Amazon’s Sneaky Pete star Libe Barer and directed by Sundance Ignite Fellowship winner Laura Holliday in the short film Disfluency, which premiered at Hollywood’s TCL Chinese Theater and won Grand Jury Prize at the Harvard Film Festival. She is also a former performer with Disneyland Resort. In addition to theatre performance, Kelly spent several years performing nationally as a labor singer at political events. She also has performed at the Gardenia Supper Club in Hollywood. Training includes: CSUF and South Coast Repertory. Many thanks to the Art In Relation / CTLB and the Scottish Rite Cathedral team for this opportunity. The Sergeant hopes you enjoy the show. Tarantara! Anne Gundry - (Constable Izzy Stumblemore) Anne, a life-long theatre-goer, found her passion for acting later in life. At the insistence of her sweetheart, David, she joined an adult community musical theatre class at the Jewish Community Center directed by Sean McMullen. From being too shy to “sing out, Louise” to belting out songs in “Working,” Anne was bitten by the acting bug and the rest is history. Her favorite roles include Mrs. Medlock in “Secret Garden,” Miss Spider in “James and the Giant Peach,” Mrs. Van Daan in “The Diary of Anne Frank,” and Maria in “Twelfth Night.” Anne is also a Founding Board member of Children’s Theatre of Long Beach who believes in CTLB’s mission to create “extraordinary theatre experiences that educate, challenge, and inspire young people.” When not on stage, you can find her at Poly High School teaching AP Biology and AP Research. She enjoys reading, playing with her dog, Zippy, and absolutely adores dancing with her fiancée, David (yes, the same David). She would like to thank David and her two adult children, Kate and Reigh, for their encouragement and support. She would also like to thank her very talented and hard-working theatre family for a really wonderful voyage on “Pirates.” Bryce Hamilton (Mabel) Bryce is thrilled to be singing this incredible score and to be working with this wonderful cast and creative team. She received her BFA in Musical Theatre from Santa Fe University of Art and Design. You may have seen her in past CTLB productions including The Secret Garden as Rose, Buddy’s Big Day Out! as Maxi, and Twelfth Night as Olivia. She was most recently in Sister Act at Simi Valley Cultural Arts Center as Sister Mary Patrick. In addition to performing Bryce works as a Director for CTLB’s After School Outreach Program. She would like to thank Jen, Jonas, Cameron, and Sean for this incredible “first rate opportunity”. To keep up with Bryce’s performances you can visit her website www.brycehamilton.rocks. She sends her love to her Mom, Dad, and sister Rory. david hillinger (Pirate toothless trout toe smythe, iii) David, along with his honey, Anne, is a founding board member of the Children’s Theatre of Long Beach and participated in their very first show, Willy Wonka, as Grandpa Joe. It has been as honor and a joy being involved with CTLB both onstage and as part of its support team. Favorite CTLB shows have been James and the Giant Peach (Centipede), The Diary of Anne Frank (Mr. Van Daan), The Secret Garden (Major Holmes and his ghost), Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (Butler and Levi), and Twelfth Night (Antonio).

  • The Music Industry Is One of the Largest Cultural Industries and Makes a Significant Contribution to the World-Economy
THE CARIBBEAN MUSIC INDUSTRY Prepared by DR. KEITH NURSE Institute of International Relations The University of the West Indies St Augustine Trinidad & Tobago Prepared for Caribbean Export Development Agency Barbados April 2001 CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION The rapid growth of an intellectual property and copyright economy, suggests that there is a window of opportunity in the realm of cultural industries for Caribbean economies. The cultural industries sector is one of the fastest growing sectors in the world-economy. In the United States, cultural industries account for approximately 40% of copyright industries, which contributes 6% of GDP, 5% of employment and has become the number one export sector, surpassing rivals like the auto industry (IIPA 2000). The music industry is one of the largest cultural industries and makes a significant contribution to the world-economy. The rate of growth for this sector during the 1980s and 1990s was between three and five times more than the growth rate for world exports (UNCTAD/ILO 1995)1. For example, the music industry in the UK has proven to be dynamic and competitive, relative to other sectors in the economy (Lewis 1995). In developing countries, the music industry has long been valued for its contribution to cultural identity (Nettl, 1997; Robinson et. al., 1991). However, there have been few studies of the music industry from an economic standpoint, despite the fact that a large number of developing countries have been involved in the production and export of music. In the Caribbean the music industry, however, remains largely undocumented, with a few notable exceptions (Bourne, C and S.M.

Rock and roll, blues, country, rhythm and blues, jazz, pop, techno, and hip hop are among the country's most internationally-renowned genres. The United States has the world's largest music industry and its music is heard around the world. Since theWWW.BSSVE.IN beginning of the 20th century, some forms of American popular music have gained a near global audience. Native Americans were the earliest inhabitants of the United States and played its first music. Beginning in the 17th century, immigrants from the United Kingdom, Ireland, Spain, Germany and France began arriving in large numbers, bringing with them new styles and instruments. African slaves brought musical traditions, and each subsequent wave of immigrants contributed to a melting pot. Much of modern popular music can trace its roots to the emergence in the late 19th century of African American blues and the growth of gospel music in the 1920s. The African American basis for popular music used elements derived from European and indigenous musics.
