Shout-out to Artemy, who's Spider-Woman: Shifting Gears Vol. 2: Civil War II review convinced me to carry on with this series despite my doubts over the title. Trades that collect event tie-ins have a such a bad reputation that I was ready to skip this one, but fortunately I made the right call in the end. It boasts a likeable lead cast and slick visuals, making the great dialogue and natural humour the icing on Shout-out to Artemy, who's great review convinced me to carry on with this series despite my doubts over the title. It boasts a likeable lead cast and slick visuals, making the great dialogue and natural humour the icing on the cake. Even the aforementioned tie-ins work well as they test Jessica Drew's friendship with Captain Marvel, which was firmly established during Baby Talk. It makes the story that much more engaging, enough to overlook the slight dip in the quality of the art during the second half. I may not be reading many Marvel books these days, but as long as the ones I do read are as good as Spider-Woman then you'll get no complaints from me. It's safe to say that I wont need any recommendations before picking up the next volume. View 1 comment. Sep 06, Wing Kee rated it really liked it. One of the better Civil War II tie ins. World: Fantastic funky art with great splash pages. The world building is great, it's small and intimate and all about characters which I like. Story: Spider-Woman: Shifting Gears Vol. 2: Civil War II non tie in stuff were absolutely fantastic and all about character. The small moments with Roger and others is classic. It's great. The tie in was also fantastic and that's saying a lot. The core of it being about Carol and Jessica makes it so much more. This is just a simple story and it's fun. Characters: Spider-Woman: Shifting Gears Vol. 2: Civil War II love Jess and her personal voice but it's also the people around her that is fantastic. I love the banter the chemistry and wit it's great. Just a great fun series. Onward to the next book! Jul 17, Chad rated it really liked it. Jessica checks out Ulysses's predictions to see if they are legit, then tries to process what happened to Bruce Banner. The last issue is a stand alone story at the beach. Jess takes the day off while Porcupine fights Sandman. Jessica deals with her emotions over Bruce Banner and Carol Danvers in a real way. Sorry nothing bad or ugly here, just superhero comics at its best. Jan 13, Artemy rated it really liked it Shelves: marvelcomicsbest-of Although I don't care about the event itself, this particular volume is OK to read as a stand-alone, because you get caught up on all the important stuff as you read the comic although beware, this volume apparently does spoil a major thing in the main event. I don't know why, but it seems like Marvel really tries to ma Dennis Hopeless continues his excellent run on Spider-Woman with this Civil War 2 tie-in. I don't know why, but it seems like Marvel really tries to make readers hate Carol, because everywhere she shows up nowadays she acts like an insufferable asshole with fascistic tendencies. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that it was a great and emotional read, even if Carol comes off as a very hateful person. The other two issues are just regular fun superhero adventure stories that also deal with Jessica's recent motherhood, nothing too special, but not bad, either. I am surprised by how much I like the baby storyline, but it actually works really well. Spider-Woman keeps being one of the best Marvel titles right now, and one of the very few that are worth reading. I Spider-Woman: Shifting Gears Vol. 2: Civil War II it will stay around for Spider-Woman: Shifting Gears Vol. 2: Civil War II while longer, because I absolutely can't get enough of Jessica Drew. View 2 comments. That was super fun. Jan 11, James DeSantis rated it really liked it. I dunno why I stopped reading this. Hopeless is a solid writer and I love Spider-woman. Any, few years late, I finally am jumping back on it. Jess is just trying to be the best mom she can be. The first couple of issues is her balancing being a superhero and a mom. It's both funny and works well to build her character. Then we get dragged into the civil war 2 event. Now at first I wasn't feeling it but when a major moment happens in Civil War 2 and someone dies, emotions are felt throughout. The I dunno why I stopped reading this. The last issue is a day at the beach with Roger, Jess, and the kids. Overall, this is pretty great. At first I didn't love the start of the civil war tie in but the emotional filled moments between Carol and Jess and another character worked really well. There's a intense battle that gave me a couple of chills. The comic also remains super fun and Jess is a fantastic main character with Roger as an amazing support cast. The kids are also adorable. Last but not least, the last issue is too cute, and I loved it. Sad last volume is next but this was great. Jun 23, Baba rated it liked it Shelves: spiderverse. Single mother, private investigator and spider woman, Jessica Drew's soap opera style season five really works well, balancing single parenthood and crime fighting! Also my fave ever book by Dennis not so Hopeless. A great read with a surprising twist in the end of the series! Spider-Woman: Shifting Gears Vol. 2: Civil War I - BookXcess Online Well done! It gave me perhaps the most heartbreaking panel of the entire CW2 saga when an angry Spider Woman confronts her best friend Captain Marvel. The artist Spider-Woman: Shifting Gears Vol. 2: Civil War II the two points of view and contrasting emotions perfectly. Spider Woman needs a revamp to bring her back into the public's consciousness; I think this volume helps to progress her there. This volume of the series takes on the Civil War II event in a way that you can appreciate without reading the main event and if you're not reading the main event, you're lucky, since that's written by the worst writer in the industry. Jessica Spider-Woman: Shifting Gears Vol. 2: Civil War II finds herself staying out of the dispute between Tony Stark and her closest friend Carol Danvers, at least until the latter asks a favour. She may be a mom now, but Jessica Drew is still kicking butt and taking names as the sensational Spider-Woman -- ably assisted by the babysitting Porcupine! And parenthood won't stop her from tangling with the baddest fish in the sea: Tiger Shark! But when the Marvel Universe erupts in a second civil war, Jess has plenty of reasons to stay on the sidelines this time. First, she has history with the major players on both sides. Then, of course, there's her bouncing baby boy to consider. But Spider-Woman has never been one to be benched for long -- and when a startling new case lands in her lap, keeping herself out of the conflict becomes impossible.

  • An Analysis of Ms. Marvel's Kamala Khan
The “Worlding” of the Muslim Superheroine: An Analysis of Ms. Marvel’s Kamala Khan SAFIYYA HOSEIN Muslim women have been a source of speculation for Western audiences from time immemorial. At first eroticized in harem paintings, they later became the quintessential image of subservience: a weakling to be pitied and rescued from savage Brown men. Current depictions of Muslim women have ranged from the oppressed archetype in mainstream media with films such as The Stoning of Soraya M (2008) to comedic veiled characters in shows like Little Mosque on the Prairie (2012). One segment of media that has recently offered promising attempts for destabilizing their image has been comics and graphic novels which have published graphic memoirs that speak to the complexity of Muslim identity as well as superhero comics that offer a range of Muslim characters from a variety of cultures with different levels of religiosity. This paper explores the emergence of the Muslim superheroine in comic books by analyzing the most developed Muslimah (Muslim female) superhero: the rebooted Ms. Marvel superhero, Kamala Khan, from the Marvel Comics Ms. Marvel series. The analysis illustrates how the reconfiguration of the Muslim female archetype through the “worlding” of the Muslim superhero continues to perpetuate an imperialist agenda for the Third World. This paper uses Gayatri Spivak’s “worlding” which examines the “othered” natives and the global South as defined through Eurocentric terms by imperialists and colonizers. By interrogating Kamala’s representation, I argue that her portrayal as a “moderate” Muslim superheroine with Western progressive values can have the effect of reinforcing Safiyya Hosein is a Ph.D.
