38 Yizkor 11Jl' There is a time for everything, for all things under the sun: A time to be born and a time to die, a time to laugh and a time to cry. A time to dance and a time to mourn, a time to seek and a time to lose, A time to forget and a time to remember. This day in sacred convocation, we remember those who gave us life. We remember those who enriched our lives with love and beauty, kindness and compassion, thoughtfulness and understanding. We renew our bond with those who have gone the way of all earth. As we reflect upon those whose memory moves us this day, we seek consolation, and the strength and insight born of faith. Tender as a father with His children, God is merciful with God’s worshippers. God knows how we are fashioned, remembers that we are dust. Our days are as grass; we flourish as a flower in the field. The wind passes over it and it is gone, and no one can recognize where it grew. But God’s compassion for God’s worshippers, God’s righteousness to children’s children remain, age after age unchanging. Three score and ten our years may number, four score years if granted the vigor. Laden with trouble and travail, life quickly passes; it flies away. What are mortals, eternal God, that You should be mindful of them? What are mortals that You should take note of them, that You have made them little less than angels? The sound of infants attests to Your power, the magnificence of life reflects Your glory.

40 The heavens display Your splendor. What majesty is Yours throughout the world! Teach us to use all of our days, 0 Lord, that we may attain a heart of wisdom. Grant us of your love in the morning, that we may joyously sing all our days.

After Psalms 124:3-4, 90:6, and 90:12

When I stray from You, Adonai my life is as death; but when I cleave to You, even in death I have life. You embrace the souls of the living and the dead. The earth inherits that which perishes. The dust returns to dust; but the soul, which is God’s, is eternal. Adonai is compassionate to all creation, granting us a share in unending life. God has planted eternity within our soul, granting us a share in unending life. God redeems our life from the grave, joining us forever in the unending chain of life. May we preserve the memories of those we love and are now gone, through charity in deed and in thought. May we live unselfishly, in truth, and love and peace, so that we will be remembered as a blessing, as we lovingly remember, this day, those who live on in our hearts.

After Psalms 16:8-9 (Rabbi Jules Harlow)

The death of those we now remember left gaping holes in our lives. But we are grateful for the gift of their lives. And we are strengthened by the blessing which they left us, by precious memories which comfort and sustain us as we recall them this day.

44 Yizkor Translation

For female relatives and friends: May God remember the soul of______who has gone to her eternal home. I pledge tzedakah as I remember her soul. Please, may her soul be bound up in the bond of life and may she rest in peace. May her existence be filled with the glory and pleasantness of Your presence, joyfully at Your right hand, forever.

For male relatives and.friends: May God remember the soul of______who has gone to his eternal home. I pledge tzedakah as I remember his soul. Please, may his soul be bound up in the bond of life and may he rest in peace. May his existence be filled with the glory and pleasantness of Your presence, joyfully at Your right hand, forever.

Notes on Tzedakah/Charity The Yizkor service was called seder matnat yad, the service of expressing generosity on behalf of those who have died. That name came from the closing line of the Torah reading for the final day of the pilgrimage festivals (when Yizkor is recited); “Each person giving a gift according to the blessing they have received from Adonai’’ (Deuteronomy 16:17). Offering charitable gifts and performing acts of justice, love, and care in memory of those who have died provides us with ways of honoring their memory and continuing their influence for good. Mahzor Lev Shalem

Meditations

May the memories of our loved ones be bound in the bond of eternal life with the souls of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah and with all of the righteous men and women who rest in the Garden of Eden. Amen.

45 A Yizkor Meditation in Memory of a Parent Who Was Hurtful

Dear God, You know my heart. Indeed, You know me better than I know myself, so I turn to You before I rise for Kaddish. My emotions swirl as I say this prayer. The parent I remember was not kind to me. His/her death left me with a legacy of unhealed wounds, of anger and of dismay, that a parent could hurt a child as I was hurt. I do not want to pretend to love, or to grieve what I do not feel, but I do want to do what is right as a Jew and as a child. Help me, O God, to subdue my bitter emotions that do me no good, and to find that place in myself where happier memories may lie hidden, and where grief for all that could have been, all that should have been, may be calmed by forgiveness, or at least soothed by the passage of time. I pray that You, who raises up slaves to freedom, will liberate me from the oppression of my hurt and anger, and that You will lead me from this desert to Your holy place. — Bob Saks in Mahzor Lev Shalem

A Yizkor Meditation for a Child Who Wants to Make Things Right Elo’ah Selichot–God of Forgiveness, In the Yom Kippur Confessional, the vidui, I read the words: We have sinned against You by scorning parents and teachers, I recite these words to You with a heavy heart, wishing that I could call the parent whom I did not treat with respect and apologize. I should have been more attentive. I spoke without understanding the power of my words. I did not show my love. I acted in ways that I wish I could undo. I neglected. I ignored. I was wrong. But I cannot say any of this to my parent because their soul is with You. And so I pray that You will accept my prayer. And I pray that You will grant me the strength to do better with the people I love. I commit myself to acting in ways that would have made my parent proud. For all these sins, forgiving God, forgive us, pardon us, grant us atonement.

46 In memory of martyrs: May God remember the souls of the martyrs of our people who gave their lives for the sanctification of God’s name. In their memory do I pledge charity. May their bravery, their dedication, and their purity be reflected in our lives. May their souls be bound up in the bond of life. And may they rest forever in dignity and peace. Amen.

In memory of congregants: May God remember the souls of our friends, members of this holy congregation, who have gone to their eternal home. May their souls be bound up in the bond of life. May these moments of meditation strengthen the ties that link us to their memory. May they rest in peace. Amen.

Exalted, compassionate God, comfort the bereaved families of this congregation. Help us to perpetuate everything that was worthy in the lives of those no longer with us, whom we remember this day. May their memory endure as a blessing. And let us say: Amen.

El Maleh Rahamim

In Memory Of The Six Million

Exalted, compassionate God, grant perfect peace in Your sheltering presence, among the holy and the pure, whose radiance is like the heavens, to the souls of all the men, women and children of the House of Israel who were slaughtered, strangled and burned in the Shoah. May they rest in paradise. Master of mercy, may they findeternal shelter beneath Your sheltering wings and may their souls be bound up in the bond of life. Adonai is their portion. May they rest in peace. And let us say: Amen

47 In Memory of All the Dead:

Exalted, compassionate God, grant perfect peace in Your sheltering presence, among the holy and the pure, whose radiance is like the heavens, to the souls of all those we have recalled today. May they rest in paradise. Master of Mercy, may they find eternal shelter beneath Your sheltering wings, and may their souls be bound up in the bond of life. Adonai is their portion. May they rest in peace. And let us say: Amen

48 Psalm 23

A Psalm of David. Adonai is my shepherd, I shall not want. God gives me repose in green meadows, and guides me over calm waters. God will revive my spirit and direct me on the right path — for that is God’s way. Though I walk in the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no harm, for You are at my side. Your staff and Your rod comfort me. You prepare a banquet for me in the presence of my foes: You anoint my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and kindness shall be my portion all the days of my life, And I shall dwell in the house of Adonai in the fullness of time. Translation from Mahzor Lev Shalem

49 Mourner’s Kaddish

May the Kaddish, which we now recite, be not only a remembrance of those no longer with us, but also a reminder of how we should live and the values that we should represent.

Mourners: Yitgadal v’yitkadash sh’mei raba, b’alma di v’ra, kir’utei, V’yamlikh malkhutei b’hayeikhon u-v’yomeikhon u-v’hayei d’khol beit Yisra-el ba-agala u-vi-z’man kariv v’imru amen. 50 May God’s great name be exalted and hallowed throughout the created world, as is God’s wish. May God’s sovereignty soon be established, in your lifetime and in your days, and in the days of all the house of Israel. And respond with: Amen. May God’s great name be acknowledged forever and ever. May the name of the Holy One, who is blessed, be acknowledged and celebrated, lauded and worshiped, exalted and honored, extolled and acclaimed, though God is truly far beyond all acknowledgment and praise, or any expressions of gratitude or consolation ever spoken in the House of Israel. Respond with: Amen. May abundant peace from heaven, and life, come to us and to all Israel. And respond with: Amen. May the One who brings harmony on high, bring harmony to us and to all Israel (some add: and to all the inhabitants of the world). And respond with: Amen.

A Personal Meditation Avinu Malkenu, Master of Peace, help us and strengthen us so that we always strive for peace. May there be harmony among all people, their companions, and friends. May there be no discord among the members of my family. You who establishes peace above, extend peace upon us and the whole world. May we draw close to You and Your Torah in truth and may we all be bound together carrying out Your will wholeheartedly. Master of Peace, bless us with peace. Amen.

51 Remembering Throughout the Year

During the year, on the anniversary of your loved one’s death, the yahrzeit, there are several ways that you can remember him or her. Here is some information to guide you:

• Memorial Candle: Since the Jewish day begins at sundown, the yahrzeit begins the previous evening. At sunset, it is customary to light a memorial candle at home. • Kaddish: It is also customary to attend minyan and recite the Mourners’ Kaddish on the yahrzeit. You are invited to recite Kaddish at any of our services (afternoon, evening and morning) within the circle of communal strength that sustains us all in the face of loss. The Kaddish prayer, an affirmation of life and faith, is transliterated in all of our prayerbooks so that everyone can participate. As part of the morning service, you may also request that the person leading services recite the El Maleh Rahamim prayer, asking that your loved one’s soul find rest under the wings of the Divine Presence. • Aliyah: If the yahrzeit is for a parent, spouse or child and you would like to be called to the Torah for an aliyah at the Torah reading closest to the yahrzeit (Monday morning, Thursday morning, or Saturday morning/afternoon), please arrive at services promptly, and check with the greeters or the gabbai, the person who assigns Torah honors. Please call the office a few days beforehand to alert us of your intentions. • Tzedakah: It is customary to give to tzedakah, charity, on the occasion of yahrzeit. To perpetuate the values and ideals of those who are no longer with us, may we suggest our congregation’s Hebrew School, which educates a new generation of Jews, or any of our synagogue’s special funds. lt is also a custom to visit the cemetery before a yahrzeit. • Reading of Names:The names of those being memorialized will be read at the afternoon/evening and morning services on the day of yahrzeit . This will give everyone the opportunity to attend at least one minyan and recite Kaddish when the names of their loved ones will be recited. In addition, we note yahrzeits by reciting the names of those whose commemorations will be observed during that week at the Kabba/at Shabbat (Friday night) preceding the yahrzeit. For service times or other questions, check the synagogue website (www.csair.org) or call the synagogue office (718-543-8400)

May your commemoration of yahrzeit be a source of comfort and consolation.
