Glan Llyn 2019

Between the 7th and 10th May upper school took a trip to Glan Llyn. 18 pupils and 4 staff took on the challenge of the outdoor and adventurous activities at the centre.

We faced our fears, made new friends and above all had a fantastic time. The residential was organised by the North Wales Sports Association, which is represented by all North Wales special schools. Working alongside pupils from the other special schools is a great opportunity to make new friends and it is safe to say that everyone did. Our groups mixed with schools from across the region and we worked with them to take on challenges such as rock climbing, high ropes, canoeing, raft building and orienteering. We developed a skill in archery. Mr Wynne was not happy because he wanted to be the best archer – Lucy thrashed him!!!

We would like to thank all the pupils for their hard work and effort over the week. They were a pleasure to take away. We are so proud of the way they overcame fears to try the many challenges. It was great to see pupils at the top of the high ropes tower looking to take a leap of faith. Those who jumped well done and those who faced fears just to stand on the edge and look down double well done.

We are pleased with those young people who showed how independent they could be by always being ready and dressed correctly, having showered and attended to their personal care needs. Being away from home is a challenge and the pupils faced and conquered this side of things admirably.

We are booked in for the same time next year, so if you are a pupil in year 9 or above have a look at what your school mates have said and done and think about going yourself next year!! Thank you for taking the time to look at our adventures, Mrs Craig, Mrs Manseri, Mrs Sharpe and Mr Wynne extend a great big thank you to the staff at Glan Llyn but more importantly to the pupils who joined us for making a great success of our time away.

H1 ‘Glan Llyners’ have added a few of their memories and photos for you to enjoy...

S1 and S2 news

Pupils from S1 and S2 who did not go to the residential had a great time in school pretending to be pirates, we dressed up as pirates, found treasure in sand, ate pirate food (tropical fruits). We made pirate biscuits, sang pirate songs and played games. We also shared our work with a great 'piratey' assembly!

Summer 2019

Children and young people spend a lot of time online – it can be a great way for them to socialise, explore and have fun. But children do also face risks like cyberbullying or seeing content that's inappropriate. Whether you're unsure about what happens online or are up to speed with new technology, it's important that you talk to your child about staying safe. It may feel daunting, but you don't need to be an expert on the internet. Understanding what children do online and the risks they face will help you keep your child safe online. Although every child signs an Acceptable Use Policy take a minute to read through the following rules together to ensure your child is safe online.

What children do online and through social Networking

Children and young people go online to connect with friends, and make new ones, to browse the internet for information, chat with others and play games. They may search for information or content on search engines like Google and Bing share images and watch videos through websites or mobile apps like Instagram, Pinterest, YouTube use social networking websites like Facebook and Twitter write or reply to messages on forums and message boards play games alone or with others through websites, apps or game consoles or chat with other people through online games, game consoles, webcams, social networks and tools like Whatsapp. When online, children and young people can learn new things, get help with homework, express themselves creatively and connect with friends and family. There are also risks, but by understanding and talking about the dangers you can help keep your child safe online.

Kids’ Rules for Online Safety I will tell my parents right away if I come across something that makes me

1. I will not give out personal information such as my address, telephone number, parents’ work address/telephone number without my parents’ permission. 2. Report to an adult if I feel uncomfortable 3. I will never agree to get together with someone I “meet” online without first checking with my parents. If my parents agree to the meeting, I will be sure that it is in a public place and bring a parent along. 4. I will talk with my parents about posting pictures of myself or others online and not post any pictures that my parents consider to be inappropriate. 5. I will not respond to any messages that are mean or in a way make me feel uncomfortable. It is not my fault if I get a message like that. If I do I will tell my parents right away. 6. I will talk with my parents so that we can set up rules for going online and using a mobile phone. We will decide upon the time of day that I can be online, the length of time I can be online and appropriate areas for me to visit. I will not access other areas or break these rules without their permission. 7. I will not give out my passwords to anyone (even my best friends) other than my parents. 8. I will check with my parents before downloading or installing software or doing anything that could possibly hurt our computer or mobile device or jeopardize my family’s privacy. 9. I will be a good online citizen and not do anything that hurts other people or is against the law.

YMH Cheerleading coaches Mrs Griffiths, Mrs Cox & Mrs Craig Vocational Options

This term some of the 14 -19 pupils are learning about different vocations.

We have a lot of exciting lessons ahead but we have already enjoyed being scientists – looking at different chemical reactions by making sweets rainbows, static hair, volcanoes and slime.

We have looked at our creative side making cards and carrying out glass engraving.

We look forward to the exciting lessons still planned for the rest of the term

YMH 10th Anniversary Garden

As part of our 10th Year celebrations we are hoping to redevelop an area in school.

After consulting with the school council and some design work by pupils we would like to get rid of the grass and make a pebble footpath where each pupil decorates a stone to be cemented into the ground. We want the ground to be something easier to maintain and pupils have asked for some planters where we can grow plants and vegetables.

We would also like to grow some climbing plants up trellises and possibly have a little seating area to include space for beanbags in the summer months.

If you know anyone who works in the building or gardening trade who would love to take part in getting the pupil’s vision realised or any garden centres who you think may help us please let us know – we would be very grateful.

There may also be opportunities for local businesses to sponsor one of our planters, roughly at the cost of £100 if they wish to help.

A huge thank you to the staff and customers from Tower Crafts in Holywell who have recently donated £500 to the school through their ongoing fundraising.

We really appreciate your kindness and would like to put the money towards this project. School Council

We haven’t had much time to meet up this half term as our school council team, but our main objective when we get back after the half term holidays is to get a vegetable patch and garden up and growing by the Sensory Play area.

The school council have already jotted down some ideas about what it is they would like to grow.

Some other things that have come up in the meetings were that we need some more sport equipment.

This will be something we could discuss in the Friends of Committee.

Sports Day

Sports day will be held on Tuesday 18th June (weather permitting).

If we are unable to hold sports day then we will reschedule it to 26th June. H3 News

This term our theme is ‘The Beach’ and we have been reading the book called ‘The Lighthouse Keepers Lunch.’ Pupils and staff have enjoyed making art work with things they have seen in the book. We have made a model lighthouse and have started to make Mr and Mrs Grinling.

We went to beach on the 3rd May to visit the Lighthouse.

Unfortunately the tide was in so we could only look at it from the sand bank.

We collected shells, stones, seaweed and some sand. Independent Living Skills

We had lots of fun even if it did rain a little whilst we were there. Mrs O’Connor even went for a paddle in the sea.

On the way home we stopped off to buy some ice cream to eat in class.

When we returned we sat and looked, touched and even smelt all the lovely stuff we collected.

The seaweed was a little smelly.

Pupils have also been working on preparing drinks and snacks as part of their ASDAN accreditation.

We have made pizzas, hot dogs and chocolate muffins.

We all enjoyed making them and especially tasting them later.

H4 in Glan Llyn

Most of H4 class went to Glan Llyn for a week of amazing activities. The pupils threw themselves into all the activities and did their best and did the school proud. Some of the pupils who went have shared some of their highlights.

One of my favourite activities was the high ropes course. It was really fun. My favourite part of this activity was the descender.

On the descender, basically, you hold on to a rope while wearing a harness as you slowly fall down.

I really enjoyed the rock climbing wall. I climbed it numerous times and made it to the top most times.

Another great activity was canoeing on the lake. The paddling was stressful but it was really fun and we had a laugh. One of the funniest activities was the bird show. The owls did some crazy things like flying over numerous people and flying on top of the speaker. It was really funny. Ross

On the Wednesday evening, we went bowling, which isn’t too far away from the rock climbing wall. I tried very hard to get a strike but even though I didn’t I played very well. I enjoyed playing archery, located in the sports hall. I did pretty well. I got 20 points with 5 shots. I LOVED making many new friends from the other schools who went on this year’s residential. Ross

I like watching the film Spiderman 3. I enjoyed going to the disco and dancing with my friend Sarah. I enjoyed canoeing because we went into the water and it was fun. I didn’t like the high ropes because i am scared of heights but I climbed up to see my friends. I liked sleeping in the room with my friends it was fun. Grace

I like going to Glan Llyn with the school. I liked being with my friends Charlotte, Mandy and Mrs. Sharpe but I did miss my mum and dogs. We want on the train for 2 hours. I liked doing a video of people falling into the lake. Lucy

I really liked seeing pictures of my friends at Glan Llyn on the school Twitter. I am looking forward to going next year. I am looking forward to going doing the disco dancing, archery and rock climbing. I have never done the boat challenge but I am not scared of the water. I want to hold the owl because I have never done it before. Luke Travel Training

Everyone should have the opportunity to use public transport. Knowing how to travel safely, effectively and independently, by public transport or other modes is an essential requirement of life. This is often taken for granted by the majority of the travelling public. It is often forgotten that at some stage in our lives we have all received travel training support, whether informally from parents, guardians and family members, or formally, by road safety training by teachers or local road safety officers. However, there are many individuals such as:

Children with special Schoolchildren educational needs

Individuals with learning difficulties or mobility, sensory or mental health difficulties that require support, assistance, mentoring and training in order to safely use public transport

Travel training teaches independence and skills enabling those who need additional help or support to make journeys independently and safely using public transport. Travel training encompasses a wide range of support and assistance for those who require it.

Travel training is essentially a series of processes by which an individual learns to make a trip on their own and in a safe manner. New skills may need to be taught such as:

Reading a timetable Keeping safe

Money skills

Appropriate behaviour Telling the time

Providing someone with the skills to find out which bus they need or teaching someone how to plan and make a journey by public transport are both classed as Travel training. The provision of travel training offers numerous benefits. These include: Improved social Increased sense of interaction and confidence and self worth social skills

Improved life choices as trainees are able to access work and social activities

Parents and Carers

The ability to travel independently can reduce the trainees’ dependency on the parents or carer as they are less reliant on being driven from A to B. Parents and carers may even start using or become more regular users of public transport themselves. Travel Training is the process by which an individual learns how to make a trip on their own in a safe manner and the journey can be destination specific i.e. to get to school, or a work placement, or can be for general travel.

If you require any more information then you can contact me at school.

Christine Cameron Travel Trainer Attendance

Please ensure we have a push towards the end of the academic year with the attendance of the pupils. Lets end the year on a positive!

The Education Welfare Officer and I are always here to support, give advice and listen to any concerns regarding your childs attendance and punctuality. Please feel free to contact us.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

Our E.M.A packs are on their way, if your household income is below £23,078, then your child could be eligible to apply as long the child is 16 or above. This is £60 every fortnight.

Please contact the school if you would like a pack.

Independent Living Skills

Pupils throughout school have been working really hard to develop their independent living skills. H1 visited Danger Point this term, they worked really well finding the dangers and have been completing the danger point work book looking at different dangers around the house and how to keep safe. H2 have been developing their cooking skills mainly focusing on measuring, reading cooking instructions and measuring the correct amount of ingredients, use scales and measuring jugs to match the cooking instructions. H3 have continued with their personal hygiene sessions and have been having fun in sensory cooking. H4 have also been practising their measuring skills using scales and measuring jugs to match amounts on cooking instructions. They have also worked hard at making different snacks of their choice such as omelettes, bacon and sausage. H5 have been enjoyed “shop, cook, eat” sessions. They have been deciding together what they would like to make, going out shopping for the ingredients and making their own lunch each week. Katie Fairclough ILS HLTA

S3 have had a busy start to the term. Some of our pupils have attended the Sensory Department residential at CAFT, whilst others have been getting creative in school and putting together fantastic art work for our class display board linked to our theme ‘Under the Sea’. This term our afternoon sessions are all based on our department theme and the pupils have been enjoying raucous sea shanties with the parachute, exploring florescent sand and finding treasure!

We have also been using switches to activate the footspa and exploring slippery water beads with our hands and feet.

We are looking forward to continuing our fun after half term with an ocean themed massage and Pirates stories!

Our trip to CAFT 2019

Sensory Department Residential

Day one: Tuesday

We arrived at CAFT ready for snack time; we sat out in the sunshine and enjoyed some juice, fruit and biscuits while we got to know the CAFT staff. After snack we went to find our rooms and unpack our cases to settle in. Then it was time for lunch! We had yummy tomato soup and sandwiches with crisps and yoghurts. After our bellies were full we went for a walk around the farm and saw all the animals – the ducks and the big goose from Toulouse, then the hens and chickens and round to see the goats. Finally we went in the aviary where the birds flew all around us. We ended the afternoon with a play on the equipment in the park, then back to the house for tea. We had a roast chicken dinner and chocolate mousse. We relaxed in the lounge after tea with toys and a DVD, then back for baths & showers before bed.

Day two: Wednesday

We enjoyed our first night and woke early and got washed, dressed and ready for breakfast. We had cereal and toast in the dining room then out to feed the animals on the farm. The rain didn’t hold us back and we walked up to the ducks to throw seeds over for them and listened to them quack and chase each other. We then went to pet the sheep who thinks he’s a dog, he has his own lead for walks too! Next we went over and fed the three big alpacas, they loved their food! After that we went back to the house for a drink and snack to get warm and dry. Once we were all settled we went over to the Art room to decorate t-shirts and make a big group painting, we used paints and dabbers and loved getting creative. By then we had worked up an appetite and went for dinner – making our own wraps with lots of different fillings. In the afternoon we ventured over to the sports hall where we enjoyed lots of fun activities. We went into the sensory music room where we could chill out and play the keyboard, use the instruments, have a go on the karaoke and enjoy the disco and UV lights! In the sports hall we used the big trampoline for some rebound fun and explored the ball pit, giant connect four and some games. We absolutely loved using the huge inflatable bouncy castle with a slide. We then went back to the house for a chill and relax before tea, we had lasagne and tomato pasta with garlic bread then cake & ice cream for pudding! We then relaxed in the lounge area and later on went back to get ready and bathed for bed.

Day three: Thursday

We got up and showered then dressed ready for breakfast, we had a last walk around the garden area whilst we packed up the minibuses ready to go back to school in time for a lovely packed lunch from CAFT.

L2 Residential

Date: 14th May 2019

L2 had a lovely time at the Farm Park. We arrived on Thursday in time for a tasty packed lunch. After lunch everyone was very excited to see their bedrooms and get settled. Some of us even wanted to go to bed right away!

Next we went for a walk around the farm to meet all the animals. We loved feeding the goats and the ducks. After some chilling time in the conservatory we enjoyed decorating some biscuits. They were delicious!

It was lovely to all sit at the table together at tea time and enjoy our chicken nuggets, chips and cake. After tea we used up lots of energy in the Sports hall on the bouncy castle, playing skittles, basketball, riding bikes, playing table tennis, connect 4 and lots of other activities!

After supper we were so tired and definitely ready for our beds! Most of us were asleep by 10.00 pm. We were up bright and early on Friday morning ready for breakfast. After breakfast we had lots of time in the park and also enjoyed exploring the sensory garden with all the different smells from the plants.

At 11.30am we had a delicious brunch. We had bacon, sausage, hash brown, beans, toast and scrambled egg. Everyone enjoyed it and ate lots!

We said goodbye to everyone after brunch and we were given some gifts to take home with us. We stopped for an ice-cream at McDonalds on the way back to school and arrived back in time for taxis.

We were all very tired but had an amazing time away with our friends.
