Susanna and Justin were inspired by her knowledge of pet nutrition.

After the Furlones married in 2005, they opened a kiosk-style pet boutique and a raw-food delivery business. When the economy took a downturn in 2007, they moved to Carmel to work at Susanna’s parents’ flower shop, Highway 68 Flowers. Customers at the flower shop, knowing that Susanna and Justin were “animal people,” would often ask Susanna or Justin for advice about nutrition for their pets. The residents of the Highway 68 corridor encouraged them to carry a small selection of pet food at the flower shop. The pet food idea took off and Susanna and Justin expanded their inventory several times to meet demand. By the summer of 2011 The Wishbone Deli (formerly known as Highway 68 Pets) they had undertaken a full remodel and expansion and renamed Susanna and Justin Furlone the shop The Wishbone Deli. 2 Corral De Tierra Rd, Salinas (831) 269-3088 www.highway68pets.com Susanna and Justin are also both volunteers for Salinas Animal Services, Peace of Mind Dog Rescue, and Animal Friends Rescue Susanna and Justin met while working at a large-chain pet supply Project. Fufu’s journey began with a three-hour drive to the airport, then a two-hour wait before boarding the plane. Next, she was on an 11-hour fl ight crossing the Pacifi c Ocean to San Francisco, and a 90-minute drive to Santa Cruz.

Fufu’s name got changed to Lulu and she blossomed in foster care. It was discovered that Lulu absolutely loved big dogs! Maria Lange, proud mother of two rambunctious chocolate Labradors named Roxie and Abby, met Lulu at an adoption event and had to stand in line to spend time with her. Seven other families had shown up that day to meet Lulu. For one reason or another, none of the other homes were the perfect fi t for Lulu, but Maria was smitten. At 18, the reality of her situation did not sink in. She went about her life as usual, got married, and found a job that she would stay at for the next 30 years.

It was not until she was in her forties that she started to notice subtle changes in her vision. She compensated by using brighter lights, stronger glasses, a hand magnifier, and then special magnification equipment. You will see lots of locals and tourists fishing and enjoying watercrafts on the island. Your destination with your pooches is going to be to the large fenced-in open space, which you won’t miss while driving around the island. There’s lots of parking, green grass, trees, the beach, the bay, and a view of Sea World. Dogs love romping here!

The Cabrillo National Monument is located at the 5 southern tip of the Point Loma Peninsula. The Cabrillo Tide Pools Trail in the National Monument is an easy half-mile coastal hike. Dogs must be on leash on the trail to the tide pools, but it’s ok for them to romp around unleashed at the tide pools. The Tide Pools Trail is actually the only area in the

monument where dogs are allowed. It is a nice short walk. Photo courtesy of NatureDogs.com

She was defi nitely a woman ahead of her time.

In the early 90s, Becky attended the fi rst Forum for Animal Rehabilitation in Corvallis, Oregon. Sanderlings Restaurant in Seascape Resort 1 Seascape Resort Drive, Aptos, CA 831-668-6800 • www.sanderlingsrestaurant.com

Happy wags! Today, after a run on the beach, we took my sandy paws to the patio at Sanderlings Restaurant in Seascape Resort so my 2-legged friends could munch some brunch. A spectacular view of Monterey Bay stretches out and there is plenty for me to watch: squirrels performing aerial acrobatics in the distant trees, seagulls soaring, and plenty of pooches pass us on their way to the beach. My pet people miss all this excitement and are focused only on the menu, drinks and food. My “peeps” love to relax here on the patio while they enjoy a mimosa (from the full bar) and the staff instinctively knows that, after a salty run on the beach, a pooch would like a nice bowl of fresh water. Spring and autumn are the best times for brunch, unless you wait for the fog to burn off around noon during summer. All year, no matter the weather temp, we keep toasty warm under the patio heaters. The weekend brunch menu includes Portabella frittata, fresh salmon benedict, a breakfast pizza with smoked salmon and crème fraiche… my people rave about it and lick their plates clean, leaving nothing to share with me. The lunch menu offers a burger, a Reuben, yummy- smelling clam chowder, and seared shrimp pasta with lemon-parmesan cheese. There are also some really interesting salads - pairing poached pears, blue cheese and candied walnuts over mixed greens… or a salad of roasted golden beets, goat cheese over arugala and endive. During the summer, we go to Sanderlings to watch the sun set into the ocean and enjoy a dinner of seafood from sustainable sources: calamari, lobster thermidor, scallops, halibut, California seabass, and seared ahi. They also offer steak, lamb, rosemary-garlic chicken and vegetarian lasagna. Sometimes, we go to Sanderlings just for the desserts. My two-legged friends have a hard time choosing between a walnut brownie sundae, a Meyer lemon tart, crème brulee, or a caramelized banana split. Their solution: invite some of my puppy pals and their people to share the desserts to have a taste of each. I give Sanderlings four paws: one for the speed they brought me a water bowl, one for the awesome view, and two paws for how happy it made my two-legged friends. Check the Sanderlings’ website for $6.95 weekday lunch specials and neighbor nights specials. Woof, Woof! Rover

Al and Lynn Frischmann By Kelly Luker

urricane Katrina changed countless people’s lives, mostly for the worse. ButH for two people, Lynn and Al Frischmann of Los Gatos, California, the experience inspired them to help save over 3,500 dogs and counting. In the six years since that tragedy, they’ve also racked up about a quarter-million miles on the road.

Th e couple lived in Wisconsin when Katrina hit. Lynn off ered to help Animals United, one of the many rescue organizations that rushed in to evacuate animals from the hurricane-battered areas of Louisiana. Th e horrors she witnessed there changed her forever. “Katrina made me assess my life and what I wanted to do with it,” said Lynn. She left a career as an EMT and ambulance driver to devote herself full time to transporting animals to safety. Al also threw himself into the work. A retired trucker, he was perfect for that volunteer role.

Disasters are not the only situations that require transport help. Lynn said they have deployed 16 times since Katrina to help the Humane Society of the United States and Animal Nation rescue dogs from not only fl oods and fi res, but from hoarders, puppy mills, and dogfi ghting rings. Additionally, Al helps build temporary shelters for the animals. Victims of hoarders and dogfi ghting must stay somewhere until the cases are adjudicated, a legal process that could take months.

Much of the couple’s day-to-day volunteer work is heading up the Animal Friends Rescue Project (AFRP) Lifelink Dog Transportation Program. Th e Program focuses on transporting dogs from overfl owing shelters to rescue groups with vacancies. Th ey once transported 93 dogs at one time up to Washington from various shelters on the Central Coast. “Th e biggest challenge is fi nding a place to stop in order to feed, water and exercise so many animals,” Al said. For assistance, they usually coordinate with volunteers along the way.

Th e biggest lesson they have learned from all those hours and miles they have devoted? “Spay and neuter is not an option,” said Lynn. “It is the only way to solve the pet overpopulation problem.”

To donate to the Lifelink Program visit www.animalfriendsrescue.org.

Kelly Luker owns Little Pup Lodge (www.littlepuplodge.com), a cage-free boarding facility designed exclusively for small dogs. She has written for Runner’s World, Salon.com and various alternative weeklies.
