  • Hermeneutics and the Early Modern Garden: Ingenuity, Sociability, Education
chapter 10 Hermeneutics and the Early Modern Garden: Ingenuity, Sociability, Education Denis Ribouillault 1 Historiography The question of meaning in landscape architecture and gardens has benefited considerably from the iconological approach developed for art history by Aby Warburg and Erwin Panofsky. The most important contributions were produced by students of Panofsky, notably David Coffin, who published his monograph on the Villa d’Este at Tivoli in 1960, and Elizabeth Blair McDougall, who wrote her dissertation on the Villa Mattei in Rome. Coffin taught and inspired a new generation of scholars such as Claudia Lazzaro for Italian Renaissance gardens and Jan de Jongh for early modern Dutch gardens. Italian and German schol- ars (Eugenio Battisti, Marcello Fagiolo, Maria Luisa Madonna, Detlef Heikamp, Karl Schwager, among others) also embraced the iconological approach, study- ing the garden within a broader cultural and literary context bringing to the fore the question of its meaning.1 The idea that the garden was designed with a specific programme became a central idea. David Coffin showed convinc- ingly that the design of the Villa d’Este gardens rested on the figure of Hercules and his Choice at the Crossroads: ‘The gardens […] present the theme of the choice of Hercules between Voluptas, represented by the Grotto of Venus, and Virtue, exemplified by the Grotto of Diana. It is possible even that the general layout of the gardens may have been conditioned by this subject. Hercules’s choice was symbolized by the Pythagorean Y, since, after pursuing a straight uneventful path of life, a youth when he came of age had to choose between 1 On the historiography of gardens, especially early modern Italian gardens, see Coffin D.R., “The Study of the History of the Italian Garden until the First Dumbarton Oaks Colloquium”, in Conan M.

  • SMALL Tour in Friuli Venezia Giulia
SMALL tour in friuli venezia giulia Day 1 | Venezia 10.30am - 5.30pm Short and intense tour starting from St. Erasmus (the garden of Venice), as readable model of the formation process of agricultural and of settlement land, where you can see the formation of the settlement (rural and urban) and of the territory: the island, full of linear watery basins (fish ponds, dug up to obtain fill soil, where the fish is bred or kept alive), lined with banks and lapped by waterways. Moving then to Murano (the island of glass) which has Sant’Erasmo both mature settlement forms, extremely dense (compact textures with the characteristic bipolar amphibious water-land system, developed in depth, even up to more than one hundred meters, for the production needs of the rolling of glass cane beads), and recent low density settlement forms and even soils of more recent, controversial, colonization. Un unusual visit to understand the essence itself of the lagoonal city and to bring back home an unforgettable memory. • Ricerche E Restauri Alla Scuola Di Villa Manin Di Passariano

  • Pirelli Calendar 2010 by Terry Richardson London
Pirelli Calendar 2010 by Terry Richardson London, 19 November 2009 – The 2010 Pirelli Calendar, now in its 37th edition, was presented to the press and to guests and collectors from around the world, at its global premiere in London. The much-awaited appointment with ‘The Cal’, a cult object for over 40 years, was held this year at Old Billingsgate, the suggestive late 19th century building on the banks of the Thames, where from 1875 to 1982 it housed the capital city’s fish market. Following China, immortalized by Patrick Demarchelier in the 2008 edition, and Botswana shot by Peter Beard a year later, 2010 is the year of Brazil and of American photographer Terry Richardson, the celebrated “enfant terrible” known for his provocative and outrageous approach. In the 30 images that scan the months of 2010, Terry Richardson depicts a return to a playful, pure Eros. Through his lens he runs after fantasies and provokes, but with a simplicity that sculpts and captures the sunniest side of femininity. He portrays a woman who is captivating because she is natural, who plays with stereotypes in order to undo them, who makes irony the only veil she covers herself with. This is a return to the natural, authentic atmospheres and images of the ‘60s and ‘70s. It is a clear homage to the Calendar’s origins, a throwback to the first editions by Robert Freeman (1964), Brian Duffy (1965) and Harry Peccinotti (1968 and 1969). Terry Richardson, like his illustrious predecessors, has chosen a simple kind of photography, without retouching, where naturalness prevails over technique and becomes the key to removing artificial excesses in vogue today to reveal the true woman underneath.

Galerie Max Hetzler Berlin | Paris | London Post Magazine McHugh, Fionnuala: Swiss artist Urs Fischer: is he serious? 23 April 2017 ` Urs Fischer, with Foamcore (2017), at the Gagosian Gallery, in Central.(/) Swiss artist Urs Fischer: is he serious? The weird and questionably wonderful work of the New York-based artist, who was in Hong Kong for his first solo exhibition in Asia, raises an obvious question: is he for real? BY FIONNUALA MCHUGH 23 APR 2017 In 2004, Swiss artist Urs Fischer created an alpine chalet made out of bread (sourdough, to be exact). It was life-size and, in succeeding years, as it did MO THI the artistic rounds, it took on a life of its own. Oriental rugs appeared; so did parakeets that hadn’t yet learned to fly and pecked at their crumby surroundings. After a while, the original sweet-smelling edifice became less fragrant as its structure, sourly, rotted. In 2007, Fischer had an exhibition at Gavin Brown’s Enterprise, in New York. The gallery floor was dug up, leaving a crater that measured roughly 11 Bac metres by nine metres and was two-and-a-half metres deep. Visitors could walk around it on a narrow ledge but there was a thrillingly stern warning Kon at the entrance: THE INSTALLATION IS PHYSICALLY DANGEROUS AND INHERENTLY INVOLVES THE RISK OF SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH. The work was Gat who called You. /m mag rea By 2012, Fischer was showing at the Palazzo Grassi, in Venice, Italy. The 18th-century palace is owned by French businessman François Pinault, whose company is the major shareholder of Christie’s auction house and who has one of the world’s largest collections of contemporary art.

Conceived as an unusual synthesis between a solo show and a group exhibition, False Friends pairs works by a range of highly recognized artists with an ensemble of 20 works by Swiss artist Urs Fischer (b. 1973). In False Friends, Urs Fischer's work is seen alongside sculptures and paintings by artists such as Pawel Althamer, Maurizio Cattelan, Fischli and Weiss, Robert Gober, Martin Kippenberger, Jeff Koons, Paul McCarthy, Cindy Sherman and Kiki Smith, all of whom engage with fundamental themes in the history of art – the representation of the human body, the transformative power of materials, and the virtues of subtle observations. Establishing unexpected connections between artworks and aesthetics, methods and materials, False Friends traces similarities and differences among a group of artists whose work has animated and sustained critical debates in contemporary art throughout the past thirty years. The work of Urs Fischer, one of the most innovative Swiss artists of his generation, is central to False Friends. Fischer celebrates metamorphosis and change through works that reveal a particular attention to process and time. Coupling the legacy of Pop art with a neo-baroque taste for the absurd, Fischer’s creative universe trembles under the forces of entropy, decay and failure.
