ALL OF YOUR EGGS IN ONE BASKET: CONSERVATION OF A MICROENDEMIC ENDANGERED SPECIES by LESLIE EILEEN RUYLE (Under the Direction of John C. Maerz) ABSTRACT Effective conservation of endangered wildlife requires a multi-disciplinary understanding of issues. Ecological knowledge of species combined with the effects of human activities on those species should be applied when developing conservation programs. Conservation efforts need to be evaluated for their effectiveness in meeting both ecological and social requirements for protection of species and impacts on local human populations. My dissertation sought to contribute to conservation efforts of Central America iguanas by using traditional ecological studies for foundational knowledge of a critically endangered species, Ctenosaura melanosterna, and examining the impact of humans living with that species. Additionally, I evaluated iguana farming as a conservation strategy meant to benefit local populations as well as protect iguanas. Specifically, I examined four different sites of varying degrees of human activities and the impact of those activities on C. melanosterna in regards to tick loads, tail loss frequency, behavior and density. Tick loads were correlated to ctenosaur density and tail loss frequency was correlated to presence of domestic animals. Behaviors changed to be bolder with human presence and densities of ctenosaurs were highest at sites with humans, but no domestic animals. We found human impacts depend on availability of food subsidies as well as presence of domestic animals. We provide a study on the growth and survival of C. melanosterna that will serve as a baseline for the species in monitoring programs. We also conducted a population viability analysis that suggested the species may be in decline despite conservation protection. -

Collins, CO 80523, USA ABSTRACT: The nesting ecology of the Allen Cays rock iguana was studied on Leaf Cay and Southwest Allen’s Cay (5 U Cay) in the northern Exuma Islands, Bahamas, during 2001 and 2002. Mating occured in mid-May, and females migrated 30–173 m to potential nest sites in mid to late June. Females often abandoned initial attempts at digging nest burrows, and average time from initiation of the final burrow to completion of a covered nest was six days. At least some females completely buried themselves within the burrow during the final stages of burrow construction and oviposition. Females defended the burrow site during the entire time of construction, and most continued that defense for at least three to four weeks after nest completion. Nests were completed between mid-June and mid-July, but for unknown reasons timing was seven days earlier on U Cay than on Leaf Cay. Nest burrows averaged 149 cm in length and terminal nest chambers usually angled off the main burrow. Depth to the bottom of the egg chamber averaged 28 cm, and was inversely correlated with shadiness of the site, suggesting that females may select depths with preferred temperatures (mean, 31.4 C in this study). -

Thornton Frwy, Dallas, Texas 75203, USA 4 Conservation and Research for Endangered Species, Zoological Society of San Diego, 15600 San Pasqual Valley Road, Escondido, California 92027, USA Abstract Methods for attaching radio transmitters to rock iguanas (genus Cyclura) are described and compared based on signal range, longevity of attachment, and potential disturbance to animal behavior or health. Case stud- ies are described for all instances of internal implantation, ingestion, and external attachment of transmitters for which data are available. Signal range did not differ dramatically between attachment methods, but did differ between transmitter models and habitats in which iguanas were tracked. Only transmitters with coiled antennas showed a dramatic reduction in signal range. Longevity of transmitter attachment varied greatly among attachment methods, and was greatest for implantation, least for ingestion, and intermediate for ex- ternal methods. Internal placement of transmitters via ingestion or implantation was advantageous in having no external apparatus to snag on vegetation or rocks. However, ingestion yielded less than one week of data, and implantation required costly, potentially stressful surgery.
