Poppy Appeal 2003

Once again, on time, the weather deteriorated just as our intrepid team of collectors set out, but undeterred they have all done splendidly (though several were disappointed in the response to their charm offensive) and I am most grateful to the new recruits for filling gaps. Congratulations to Sylvia Brewerton, Helen Harmer, Julia Huskinson and Sylvia Oliver on 20 years service! 1 shall have the pleasure of presenting them with tokens of appreciation from the Legion. Many thanks to all the pubs, shops and businesses who displayed boxes - especially Peter Bone at the Royal Oak and Andrew Miles and his staff at Wyevale Garden Centre for record collections - and to the meticulous team of wranglers who counted the takings superbly. To my delight, we have increased our total by 10% - to £2,787; perhaps the news from Iraq has reminded people of the continuing need for the Legion's work, whether or not they agreed on the justification for that war. There is no doubt that it is a struggle to keep up interest in the Legion as the numbers of people who remember the Second World War - the last which really affected everybody in this country - are steadily diminishing. The Legion's leaflets make it clear that there is still a need and that their work is vital. In supporting them we are in a small way paying our debt to those who suffered or died for our freedom. Farewell To Peter And Mary Fox

This month Chipperfield will be saying farewell to Peter and Mary Fox. They moved from into The Briars in Croft Lane 18 years ago and since then have played a most active part in village life.

1 / 3

Both have made a major contribution to St Paul's Church, where Peter has served both as Treasurer and Churchwarden and where Mary was very much involved in the reestablishment of the Mothers Union and the running of the regular monthly service for mothers and toddlers. They both helped couples getting married with Marriage Preparation Classes. Mary is a highly skilled flower arranger and organised last year's wonderful Flower Festival at St Paul's. Outside the Church, the Foxes will be missed by many others. These include all those served by Chipperfield Care, for which they have both been loyal members since it was formed, the Chipperfield Choral Society, where Mary sang, and by those in the village with relatives or friends being cared for at Croxley House, which Peter continued to serve in many ways after they had moved away from Croxley Green. We wish both Peter and Mary well as they move down to Devon to be near their family and thank them for all they have done in their time in the village. David Nobbs

Au Revoir From Tony And Margaret

Tony and Margaret Rance are on the move to pastures new in Scotland. After 40 happy years in Chipperfield, where we have made many friends, we will be taking a lifetime of memories with us. As we still have family reasonably close, we will be visiting from time to time, so maybe this should just be au revoir.

Some Stress Relief For You And Your Pets!

I suppose I've always had an interest in alternative therapies, as a child I used to collect minerals and semi- precious stones not realising their healing properties. When my horse was diagnosed with arthritis a few years ago his recovery was helped by a homeopathic vet and Reiki treatments. In fact all my pets wear magnotherapy collars, which help a range of ailments including arthritis, skin disorders, it even helps my nervous cat! I decided to become a therapist myself and currently offer Reiki and Crystal therapy treatments, plus 1 am also a distributor for Bioflow© magnotherapy products. We all seem to live such busy lives, so what better way to de-stress and unwind with a Reiki or Crystal treatment? After a treatment it will leave you feeling relaxed and in many cases your aches and pains completely gone. Each treatment lasts approximately one hour and, as I live in . I offer a fully mobile service for the surrounding villages, so you don't even have to take a step out of your own front door! t also offer treatments for horses and have known it to help many issues including behaviour problems and can help to assist healing after an accident or illness. So perhaps if you are feeling stressed about Christmas or even stuck for gift ideas then why not treat yourself, a friend or relative, plus not forgetting your beloved horses and pets too!!! The Leatham Family

Readers may recall an article in the May issue of Chipperfield News offering a house swap with the Leatham family in Australia. We are pleased to announce that Pat (who was born in Queen Street), together with his Australian wife, Therese, and their two children, Brooke and Thomas, arrived in in October and are staying in for 12 months. The English family who are involved in the house swap read the article

Circus World

Wow! What a spectacular performance was given by all 165 members of The Dance Place. Ballet, tap, modern, singing, mime, drama - everything was included in this brilliant biannual show, delivered so enthusiastically from the youngest 3 year old to the more mature in age. I particularly enjoyed watching the 50 or so children from Chipperfield and felt proud that as a village we have so many talented boys and girls. However. Chipperfield talent didn't stop at the performers but also the excellent drama sketches written and directed by Patty Ling, as well as Diana Iles who was the biggest star of the evening. She has spent most of this year engrossed in costume and set design, selecting and recording music, choreographing and directing, resulting in a truly sparkling show. If you want to know more about the classes that The Dance Place run, please contact Diana Iles on 01923-269402. Roll on the next show! Ruth Dicker

Saints And Sausages Party

On Friday 31 October St Paul's Church ran an `alternative' event to Halloween, our `Saints and Sausages' party. We had not run anything like this before and therefore had no idea how many children might attend or how enjoyable it would be. We needn't have wondered, or worried! Thirty-nine children attended the party. which was held in the Parish Room, and a good time was had by all (including the helpers). 'T'here were games, craft. sausage and mash and `goody hags' to go home with. Best of all, we had engaged the services of a Christian mime artist, Steve Murray. Steve had travelled all the way from Manchester to be with us, but it was well worth the trip; his performances were enjoyed by both the children, helpers and some of the parents alike. Tickets to the party cost just £( and all of the ticket money will be donated to the Chipperfield Youth Club. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everybody who helped run the event; without their help and enthusiasm, the party would have been impossible to run. Although we were exhausted afterwards, we may be tempted to repeat the exercise next year! Ann Waizie
