This race will mark an important opportunity for the female drivers, who for the first time will be joined on the track by Deborah Mayer, the brainchild of the Iron Dames project. © IRON LYNX | 9 Iron Dames will be powered by Iron Lynx Motorsport Lab for their next challenges. The racing team will be competing with both Iron Dames and its male line-up Iron Lynx, namely Claudio Schiavoni, Andrea Piccini and Sergio Pianezzola, who are the founding members of the company along with Deborah Mayer. For Audi, it is a home round. But in Nuremberg of all places the brand with the four rings has had to wait for a triumph for ten years – in 2002, it was successful with the compact TT. In 1990 and 1991, the V8 quattro was victorious at the Norisring and in 2002 it was the ABT-Audi TT-R. Yet with the A4 DTM, the situation seems to have been jinxed. From 2004 to 2011, it won five out of eight possible champion’s titles and 34 DTM races. Not at the Norisring, though. Pole positions, leading laps, fastest laps, second places, third places – only victory was denied to the A4 DTM on the short, 2.3-kilometer city street circuit between the Dutzendteich lake and the easyCredit Stadium. In 2010, merely 0.591 seconds were lacking. Now the A4 DTM is in a museum and its successor, the A5 DTM, just won its first DTM race at Spielberg at the beginning of June.

The Swede continued the performance he had shown at the season opener where he had clinched the pole position in his Red Bull Audi A5 DTM at the same venue. In Saturday morning’s free practice, Ekström drove the fastest time and was the best Audi driver in each of the qualifying sections. The two-time DTM Champion, however, entered the crucial shoot-out of the top four with a small disadvantage because he had driven a second timed lap in Q3. “That’s why there was no more grip in the tires in Q4,” said Ekström. “I’m pleased nonetheless because I’ve been trying to find a perfect set-up for qualifying at a few of the last races. Today, I managed to do that; the car was right on the dot.” On the whole, the Audi drivers were not able to continue the strong results of the free practice session in the morning.

The 25-year-old racing driver competes in a touring car championship for the first time in her life. In her pleasant, honest and yet always modest way the young Swiss immediately wins the hearts of her male conversationalists: New, fresh, charming – and even slightly surprised herself about the Audi contract – Rahel Frey absorbs every aspect of her new environment. Her path to motorsport is a result of family history. Her father drove karts and liked to have his children around him at the track. When the teenagers were big enough they wanted to see for themselves. Rahel competed against her brother and was immediately a little quicker. “Then I wanted more,” she says. From 1998 to 2003 she continued her career path in karts before subsequently switching to single- seater junior championships. In parallel, however, she also wanted to complete her education. In 2006 she sat her exams in economics at the sport high school in Bern – a qualification comparable to the school leaving certificate in Germany. “You could say I was forced into it: My mother was in favor of education, my father for sport,” remembers the Swiss.
