In the first five months of 2020, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland imported some 4 800 tonnes, 20 percent less than in the same period of 2019. In the UK, frozen pangasius fillets are mainly used in the fish and chips fast food restaurant trade, which were closed during the lockdown. In line with shrinking demand, the unit value of pangasius fillets have fallen from USD 4.30 to USD 3.50 per kg. In the first five months of 2020, Spanish imports fell to 2 200 tonnes compared with 3 000 tonnes in the same period of last year. Similarly to the UK market, the unit value of pangasius imports declined from USD 3.00 to USD 2.60 per kg. Data and information from ICES stock assessments, peer-reviewed literature, grey literature and local experts are used to estimate Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) catch. Estimates of IUU catch are made in terms of discards, unreported, over-reported, and recreational and subsistence catch and are used to improve the reported baseline. Our preliminary reconstructed catch within Dutch EEZ equivalent waters is nearly 2 times the reported baseline catch. The reconstructed catch slightly decreases from a catch of 233,000 t in 1950 to 176,000 t in 2010 with a peak of nearly 500,000 t in 1985.

The gill rakers have similar gross morphology, occurring as separate conical thornlets on gill arches. The bony cores of these thornlets (rakers) consist of vertical ribs with connective segments between them.
