Chico”) is one of thirteen marine reserves found in Belize, and includes mangrove habitat, seagrass beds, sublittoral forest and the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef. This report focuses on the establishment of a long term coral reef monitoring programme in the Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve and the analysis of baseline data collected between March 2010 and November 2010 by the marine conservation organisation Blue Ventures. Bacalar Chico Marine Reserve is divided into four zones: the Preservation Zone (PZ) where all marine activities (e.g. fishing, tourism) is banned, Conservation Zones 1 and 2 (CZ1 & CZ2) where limited marine resource exploitation is allowed and the General Use Zone (GUZ) where artisanal fishing is regulated. Cover of major substrate and benthic groups and coral species was surveyed using Point Intercept Transects (PITs). Coral mortality, bleaching and disease were surveyed for 50 coral colonies within haphazardly selected transects. Fish species assemblages in each zone were monitored using fish belt transects and the ‘Rover Diver’ fish survey, a haphazard sampling technique that covers all habitats including crevices and overhangs. The majority of sites surveyed had low scleractinian coral cover, high cover of turf and fleshy algae. Average scleractinian coral cover was 10.5%, and ranged between 2.8 and 17.2%. Coral cover was 6.5 ± 1.4% on the back reef, 9.4 ± 1.7% on the fringing reef and 12.5 ± 0.9% on the fore reef. It was highest on CZ1 (13.6 ± 1.2%) and lowest on the GUZ (4.4 ± 1.9%) with CZ2 and PZ having 9.4 ± 1.7% and 10.2 ± 1.2% cover respectively. Species richness and diversity in the coral community was higher on the fringing and fore reef than on the back reef. It was highest on CZ1 and CZ2 and lowest on the GUZ. Total abundance and abundance of the major fish families and species diversity were higher on the fore reef and fringing reef than the back reef and similarly higher in the conservation/preservation zones than in the general use zone. Haemulids were an exception, having highest abundance on the GUZ. Patterns in total fish biomass and biomass of economically and commercially important fish species showed high levels of variability and no clear trends between different reef habitats and conservation zones. In general the observations made here indicate that the reefs of Bacalar Chico are similar to other degraded Caribbean reefs in their benthic, coral and fish composition, dominated by fleshy and turf algae and with low fish biomass and diversity. Despite the higher coral cover and coral and fish diversity in fisheries closures, the full benefit of management in attaining high biomass of key fish functional groups and diversity is not achieved yet and it is recommended that management efforts should be intensified

Coral Reef Initiative Program (NOAA) for Puerto Rico. This work is intended to serve as the framework of a prospective research program in which the ecological health of these valuable marine ecosystems can be monitored. An expanded and more specialized research program should progressively construct a far more comprehensive characterization of the reef communities than what this initial work provides. It is intended that the better understanding of reef communities and the available scientific data made available through this research can be applied towards management programs designed at the protection of coral reefs and associated fisheries in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean. More likely, this is not going to happen without a bold public awareness program running parallel to the basic scientific effort. Thus, the content of this document is simplified enough as to allow application into public outreach and education programs. El estudio de más de 35,000 restos muestra que se usaron 391 individuos de 63 especies y 35 familias. Siete especies fueron particularmen- te importantes por la cantidad de individuos y su frecuencia de uso, aunque el único atributo en común a las 11 ofrendas, es el pez sierra (Pristis). Sólo fueron ofrendados peces marinos, predominando las formas del Atlántico. La mayoría de los peces fueron depositados con una preparación taxidérmica para eliminar la columna vertebral. Las ofrendas colocadas en el relleno constructivo fueron marcadamente menos diversas respecto de las otras ofrendas colocadas en cistas. Aunque se pudieron relacionar algunas especies mencionadas por Sahagún con las ofren- dadas, las fuentes etnohistóricas proporcionan poca información de los peces y su uso, de ahí la importancia de un apropiado rescate y estudio de los restos de peces como fuente primaria y casi exclusiva de las relaciones entre el hombre mesoamericano y este recurso.

The survey augmented the existing coverage in the area from previous USF cruises. The main scientific objectives of the cruise are to define the fish habitat areas within the Florida Middle Ground HAPC using multibeam bathymetry, multibeam backscatter, and ground truth data (previous and new sediment grab samples and previous video samples). Second, to eventually produce a Habitat Map that defines area of Sediment, rock, and coral reef. Third, to provide a map of the paleoshoreline during a previous glacial period, when sea level was lower. The first objective has been completed and the data DVD’s have been sent to the Gulf of Mexico Fisheries Management Council in March 2007. Drs. Mallinson and Naar have coauthored one paper presented at the international American Geophysical Union Meeting in 2006 (Mallinson et al., 2006) and have another paper submitted to a special volume (Hine et al., 2007) and have a third and final paper summarizing all our work at the Florida Middle Grounds in preparation (Mallinson et al., 2007).

Hoeksema2,3,6 Received: 20 May 2020 /Accepted: 8 August 2020 / Published online: 20 August 2020 # The Author(s) 2020 Abstract The Caribbean scleractinian reef coral Agaricia undata (Agariciidae) is recorded for the first time as a host of the coral-gall crab Opecarcinus hypostegus (Cryptochiridae). The identity of the crab was confirmed with the help of DNA barcoding. The association has been documented with photographs taken in situ at 25 m depth and in the laboratory. The predominantly mesophotic depth range of the host species suggests this association to be present also at greater depths. With this record, all seven Agaricia species are now listed as gall-crab hosts, together with the agariciid Helioseris cucullata. Within the phylogeny of Agariciidae, Helioseris is not closely related to Agaricia. Therefore, the association between Caribbean agariciids and their gall- crab symbionts may either have originated early in their shared evolutionary history or later as a result of host range expansion. New information on coral-associated fauna, such as what is presented here, leads to a better insight on the diversity, evolution, and ecology of coral reef biota, particularly in the Caribbean, where cryptochirids have rarely been studied. In addition to the data collection, training, capacity building and environmental education undertaken by CCC, the expeditions have also provided opportunities for compiling presence / absence species lists of fish and corals in the different project areas. This document contains the fish list compiled by CCC staff and experienced volunteers and a reprint of Fenner (1999) detailing coral taxonomy in Belize and Cozumel, the Belize component of which was compiled while the author was working as a member of CCC’s field science staff.
