The course of the first one is used as a general analogy to study the second, and the older one. This approach puts aside the issue of biological differences among the human fossils, and concentrates solely on the cultural and technological innovations. It also demonstrates that issues that are common- place to the study of the trajisition from foraging to cultivation and animal husbandry can be employed as an overarching model for the study of the transition from the Middle to the Upper Palaeolithic. The advantage of this approach is that it focuses on the core areas where each of these revolutions began, the ensuing dispersals and their geographic contexts. -

Exploring the Concept of Home at Hunter-Gatherer Sites in Upper Paleolithic Europe and Epipaleolithic Southwest Asia by Lisa A. Maher and Margaret Conkey In both Southwest Asia and Europe, only a handful of known Upper Paleolithic and Epipaleolithic sites attest to aggregation or gatherings of hunter-gatherer groups, sometimes including evidence of hut structures and highly structured use of space. Interpretation of these structures ranges greatly, from mere ephemeral shelters to places “built” into a landscape with meanings beyond refuge from the elements. One might argue that this ambiguity stems from a largely functional interpretation of shelters that is embodied in the very terminology we use to describe them in comparison to the homes of later farming communities: mobile hunter-gatherers build and occupy huts that can form campsites, whereas sedentary farmers occupy houses or homes that form communities. Here we examine some of the evidence for Upper Paleolithic and Epipaleolithic structures in Europe and Southwest Asia, offering insights into their complex “functions” and examining perceptions of space among hunter-gatherer communities. We do this through examination of two contemporary, yet geographically and culturally distinct, examples: Upper Paleolithic (especially Magdalenian) evidence in Western Europe and the Epipaleolithic record (especially Early and Middle phases) in Southwest Asia. -

The evidence of language origins Human language Culture refers to the individually acquired system of ‘understanding’ which reflects the distinctive life trajectory of the organism in question. It refers to socially rather than genetically transmitted behaviour patterns and their products. ‘Cultural dynamics’, therefore, are the processes by which the intelligent organism alters its perceptible reality through its dialectic participation in the processes shaping it (Bednarik 1990). Since the inevitable outcome of such interaction between percepts, concepts and behaviour patterns is selection in favour of increased level of ‘intelligence’, it is to be expected to result in forms of ‘consciousness’, such as those of humans. The process is reified through the perceptible (perceptible, for instance, to humans) externalizations of a species’ concepts onto physical reality (art, in the case of humans), which renders possible the reality constructs of the species, because the neural structures supporting such concepts become available for processing natural sensory stimuli in a taxonomizing format (Bednarik 1995: 628). Since this is the basis of human consciousness, it would be pointless trying to understand human constructs of reality without considering this evolutionary context, or their nexus with cognitive evolution. The purpose of this lecture is to examine the origins of human language ability itself, but this involves visiting several other issues, as well as considering a variety of potential explanations. There is no consensus on this subject at all, and the hypotheses we have range from one extreme to the other. According to the spectrum of current hypotheses, the advent of language occurred at some point between 3.5 million and 32,000 years ago. -

PERSPECTIVE Overkill, glacial history, and the extinction of North America’s Ice Age megafauna PERSPECTIVE David J. Meltzera,1 Edited by Richard G. Klein, Stanford University, Stanford, CA, and approved September 23, 2020 (received for review July 21, 2020) The end of the Pleistocene in North America saw the extinction of 38 genera of mostly large mammals. As their disappearance seemingly coincided with the arrival of people in the Americas, their extinction is often attributed to human overkill, notwithstanding a dearth of archaeological evidence of human predation. Moreover, this period saw the extinction of other species, along with significant changes in many surviving taxa, suggesting a broader cause, notably, the ecological upheaval that occurred as Earth shifted from a glacial to an interglacial climate. But, overkill advocates ask, if extinctions were due to climate changes, why did these large mammals survive previous glacial−interglacial transitions, only to vanish at the one when human hunters were present? This question rests on two assumptions: that pre- vious glacial−interglacial transitions were similar to the end of the Pleistocene, and that the large mammal genera survived unchanged over multiple such cycles. Neither is demonstrably correct. Resolving the cause of large mammal extinctions requires greater knowledge of individual species’ histories and their adaptive tolerances, a fuller understanding of how past climatic and ecological changes impacted those animals and their biotic communities, and what changes occurred at the Pleistocene−Holocene boundary that might have led to those genera going extinct at that time. Then we will be able to ascertain whether the sole ecologically significant difference between previous glacial−interglacial transitions and the very last one was a human presence. -

SOE]ONO INTRODUCTION HE oldest description of material valuable for prehistoric recording in future times was given by G. E. Rumphius at the beginning of the eighteenth century. Rum T phius mentioned the veneration of historical objects by local peoples, and even now survivals of the very remote past retain their respect. On several islands we also notice a continuation of prehistoric traditions and art. Specific prehistoric relics, like many other archaeological remains, are holy to most of the inhabitants because of their quaint, uncommon shapes. As a result, myths are frequently created around these objects. An investigator is not permitted to inspect the bronze kettle drum kept in a temple at Pedjeng (Bali) and he must respect the people's devout feelings when he attempts to observe megalithic relics in the Pasemah Plateau (South Sumatra); these facts accentuate the persistence oflocal veneration even today. In spite of the veneration of particular objects, which in turn favors their preservation, many other relics have been lost or destroyed through digging or looting by treasure hunters or other exploiters seeking economic gain. Moreover, unqualified excavators have com pounded the problem. P. V. van Stein Callenfels, originally a specialist in Hindu-Indonesian archaeology, be came strongly aware of neglect in the field of prehistoric archaeology, and he took steps to begin systematic research. During his visit to kitchen middens in East Sumatra during a tour of inspection in 1920 for the Archaeological Service, he met with the digging of shell heaps for shell for limekilns. -

Introduction The Voegelinian analysis referred to in the title refers primarily to two elements of the political science of Eric Voegelin. The first is his philosophy of consciousness, systematically developed first in Anamnesis.1 The second is his concept of compactness and differentiation of experience and symbolization. It will be necessary to touch upon a few other Voegelinian concepts, notably his understanding of “equivalence,” but for reasons of space only a summary presentation is possible. A second preliminary remark: the terms “Religion” and “Politics” are in quotation marks because their usage in the context of the Upper Paleolithic is anachronistic, though not entirely misleading. The meaning of these terms is commonsensical, not technical, and is meant to indicate what Clifford Geertz once called “oblique family-resemblance connections” among phenomena.2 Third, as a matter of chronology the Upper Paleolithic conventionally refers to the period between 50,000 and 10,000 years ago (50KYBP- 1 Voegelin refined his analysis of consciousness in the last two volumes of Order and History. Vlasenko Department of Geology, Moscow State University, Moscow, Russia, 119899 e-mail: [email protected] Abstract Cryolithosphere dynamics in the East Siberian Eurasian Arctic shelf during the last 50,000 years were recon- structed on the basis of paleogeographic events including transgressions and regressions of the Arctic Ocean, and changes of paleoclimatic environmental conditions within subaerially exposed shelf areas after their flood- ing by sea water. Mathematical models and calculations were developed in accordance with these events. Three transgressive and three regressive stages in the evolution of the Arctic shelf were established for the last 50,000 years. Air and permafrost temperatures and their spatial and temporal variations were reconstructed for regres- sive epochs, while sea bottom temperatures, salinity and "overburden pressure" were reconstructed for trans- gressive periods. The possible thickness of permafrost in coastal areas is 345-455 m. The possible thickness of ice-bonded permafrost and non ice-bonded saline permafrost ranges from 240-350 and 20-25 m respectively in the central shelf, to 140-175 and 10 m in the outer shelf. Introduction Therefore, in order to solve this contradiction it is ne- cessary to estimate the extent of the Sartan regression.
