I could not think of a more appropriate feast than Corpus Christi for us to re- turn home to our parish church. This feast is really a summation of who we are and why we are here. Our primary reason to be here in this sacred space is to worship our loving God and in return, He nourishes us with His own Body and Blood. And then, we become what we receive – the Body of Christ in the world. These last months have been some of the toughest of my entire priesthood, and like all of us, remaining faithful to who we are has brought us to this day. Last week at the priests’ convocation in Galveston, one of the speakers said to us that a decapitated body cannot live; likewise, a head that is decapitated cannot live. If we sepa- rate ourselves from Christ, who is the head of the Body, the Church, then we will die. We cannot live apart from Christ. And Christ needs His Body, the Church, to be vibrant and alive so as to continue the mission began with His passion, death and resurrection. The days following the flood, when we lost our parish home, the cry went forth, “WE ARE THE CHURCH!” Yes, we are the Church and being Church comes with responsibilities and accountability to Christ, our head. Friends, this building represents this and so much more. We are Church with this building and without it. But, as we have all experienced, it is so much easier to be Church when we have a home to gather and worship our God and be strengthened as the Body of Christ in the world. As you have seen, there are a few changes in the church. In the narthex we now have a Welcome Center. We want this a place where people have the opportunity to ask questions about parish life and even to register as members of our community. The staff has made a commitment to be present to kick off this expanded welcome ministry. Also, in the narthex, the Hospitality Ministry has found a new home. Gone are the corner hiding places to make room for closets for bulletins, baskets and other items needed for the ministry. In the nave, there are several changes. First and center is the new altar. Again, I thank the donors who made the four angels possible. The angels stand in adoration of what happens on the altar with each angel holding an item that is needed to worship the Lord, God. The newly designed ambo sits on the left as you face the altar. This ambo is completely accessible for those with mobility difficulties. The “lectern” part of the ambo raises and lowers to accommodate adults, children and those who use wheelchairs. It really is a symbol of our moto to be a people for others. In fact, in the lowest position, the reading table slides in to the lap of a person sitting in a chair. S/he can read from the ambo just as able-bodied people can. We switched sides so that those using a wheel chair can wheel right up to the ambo without having to cross the entire sanctuary again. So, with the angels on the altar and the switching places of the presider and dea- con’s chairs with the ambo – well, it all looks different. You may also notice that we took the two confessionals (also referred to as the Chapels of Reconciliation) and divided the same space into three confessionals. There’s still ample room in each of the confessionals. All in all, it’s just good to be home. And, if you haven’t done so, be sure to check out the Lady Chapel and don’t forget to look up! My heartfelt thanks go out to everyone for making the Dedication of the Church and Altar possible.
