Westbam Monumental
Westbam. Das Monumentalinterview in 2 Teilen (20.7 und 25.7.2010) Es sollte sein letzter Auftritt bei der Love Parade werden. Westbam war der einzige DJ, der von 1989 bis 2008 bei allen Love Parades aufgelegt hatte. Vor der Love Parade 2010 hatte er beschlossen, in Duisburg das allerletzte Mal zu spielen und sich von dem Event zu verabschieden. Zum Abschied hat er nicht nur eine eigene letzte Hymne „Don´t look back in Anger“ veröffentlicht, sondern auch eine monumentale Triple CD mit dem Titel „A Love Story 89-10“ mit seinen größten Love Parade Hymnen, den Tracks der frühen Jahren und seinen aktuellen Tracks und Mixes. Doch dann geschah die Katastrophe von Duisburg und alles war anders. Das folgende Interview ist die Full Length Version von 2 Gesprächen von Jürgen Laarmann mit Maximilian Lenz, das erste fand in der Woche vor der Love Parade statt und das zweite wenige Tage nach dem Ereignis. Teile der Interviews wurden veröffentlicht von Welt Kompakt (Titelstory 23.7.) und SZ-Online (25.7.). Westbam selbst sagte, es sei sein wenig so, als wenn man rund um die Jungfernfahrt der Titanic zwei Interviews gemacht hätte. Eins vor dem Ablegen und eins nach der Katastrophe. Es sei klar, dass es da unterschiedliche Sichtweisen gebe., Part One JL: „A Love Story 1989-2010“ - CD 1 sind die „Anthems“ . Was unterscheidet ein Anthem von einem gewöhnlichen Clubhit. Westbam: Bei den Anthems geht es schon darum, die Gefühle einer Gemeinschaft auszudrücken, sofern es einem einzelnen überhaupt möglich ist. Das ist der Ansatz. Die Anthems sind ein Genre, das wir mit den Members of Mayday und den Mayday Anthems ins Leben gerufen haben und was dann seit 1997 mit „Sunshine“ für die Love Parade weiterentwickelt haben.

Techno in Germany: Its Musical Origins and Cultural Relevance David Robb, Belfast ISSN 1470 – 9570 Dave Robb 130 Techno in Germany: Its Musical Origins and Cultural Relevance David Robb, Belfast This article documents the musical evolution of German techno from Kraftwerk to West Bam and Sven Väth and examines the reasons behind techno’s phenomenal success in Germany and its high profile in the media. It charts the convergence of international DJs on the newly reunified Berlin in 1990 culminating in the famous Berlin sound. It looks at how this underground subculture (claimed as the first area in social life where German unification took place) was subsumed by the fashion and musical mainstream. With reference to cultural theory, the article examines, both aesthetically and socially, the significance of club culture and mass youth events such as the Love Parade. It examines the dialectic relationship between the manipulations of the culture industry and the ‘creative appropriation of culture’ by the ravers and DJs themselves. It probes behind the claims of the German techno mainstream to be a model of functioning democracy and tolerance and looks at the aesthetic philosophies of techno rebels such as Attari Teenage Riot, the Fuck/Hate Parade and the music of the Mille Plateaux label as guided by the theory of Deleuze and Guattari. It’s Saturday 21st July, 2001, weekend of the Berlin Love Parade, the biggest annual techno festival in the world. The railway station at Alexanderplatz echoes with the piercing shrill of whistles, as youth from all over Europe converge and head off towards the Reichstag.

Fast scheint es, als wären sie nie verschwunden gewesen, als habe sich der Electrosound nur einige Jahre in bzw. hinter anderen Genres der elektronischen Musik oder dem HipHop verborgen. In diesen Tagen, in denen Electro nun wieder allerorten um die Ecke quietscht, sieht es so aus, als sei er nie wirklich aus den Charts herausgefallen. Da ist es folgerichtig, wenn Westbam, der mit seinem Label Low Spirit und dessen Sublabel Electric Kingdom zum führenden Macher des derzeitigen Electro-Revivals geworden ist, diese Musik schlicht als Popmusik betrachtet. Denn mit der Mischung von Electrosounds und eher zum Techno gehörigen Beats, die Westbam mit ziemlich angestrengter Originalität "Technolectro" getauft hat, ist eine für die Käufermasse akzeptable Formel gefunden worden.So findet man Techno und seine Spielarten nun auch außerhalb der Love-Parade neben Aerosmith oder den Fantastischen Vier in den Charts. Das ist zwar nichts Neues, doch so nah an Rock war Techno noch nie. Und so könnte er auch auf dem amerikanischen Markt landen, wie The Prodigy etwa oder die Chemical Brothers. Westbam hatte in den vergangenen drei Jahren des öfteren ein Händchen bei der Produktion seiner Hits. Die Run-DMC-Coverversion "Hard Times" hat lange vor den Jason Nevins Hop-House-Stampfern die Wiederentdeckung des frühen HipHop eingeleitet, und mit seiner Single "BeatBox-Rocker" führte er die allmähliche Verrockung seiner Tracks konsequent weiter.

Die Westbam Story 1985 bis 2019 Maximilian Lenz = Westbam = Westfalia Bambaataa Westbam: "Was ist Recordart?", in Zs. „Der Neger“ Berlin 1/1985 Record Art ist, kurz gesagt, ein Komponieren neuer Stücke anhand vorhandener Platten. Die einzige mir bekannte Record Art Aufnahme, die als Platte zu haben ist: DJ Afrika Bambaataa live (Death Mix). Von mir gibt es einige Livemitschnitte auf Tape. Die Methoden der Record Art sind: das Mixen (Übereinander laufen lassen von Platten), das Cutten (Aneinanderschneiden von Platten) und, nicht zuletzt, das berühmt-berüchtigte "Scratchen" (das sich allerdings einer kurzen, griffigen Definition sperrt): Keineswegs ist es nur das rhythmische Hin und Herwackeln, zu dem es von seinen ignoranten Kritikern gemacht und von deutschen Dilettanten Disc Jockeys zugerichtet wurde (Zitat eines wirklich großen Scratchers Grandmixer DST: "They are really ruining scratching!"). Am echten Scratching hängt neben oder vielleicht besser: vor der rhythmischen Akzentuierung eine neue Inhaltlichkeit, Wörter und Sätze können in eine andere Platte "hineingescratcht" werden. Neben diesem inhaltlichen Aspekt hängt von den oben genannten Herrschaften ebenfalls unbeachtet, eine bestimmte Mixkultur am Scratchen: Ein neues Stück kündigt sich im vorherigen durch eine sequenzierte, rhythmische Abfolge eines mehr oder minder charakteristischen Wortes, Satzes, Geräusches an, ebenso können Wörter oder Geräusche in die folgende Platte isoliert fortgeführt werden (das entspricht etwa dem Vermalen zweier Farbflächen, die in einem Bild aufeinandertreffen; aber ich will nichts beschönigen: Plattenauflegen ist längst nicht so romantisch wie Malen!). Scratchen ist jedenfalls die wundervollste Erfindung, die in der Disco je gemacht wurde der Wackel Gag ,,Skratschen" mag out sein, doch wer hat je davon gehört, daß eine Erfindung aus der Mode kommt ("der Otto Motor ist jetzt out!").
