Press Release RECORD NUMBER of TEAMS UNVEILED for 2018 Wednesday 21 March 2018 RECORD NUMBER OF TEAMS UNVEILED FOR 2018 TOUR DE YORKSHIRE AND ASDA TOUR DE YORKSHIRE WOMEN’S RACE With just over six weeks to go until the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire, organisers Welcome to Yorkshire and Amaury Sport Organisation have announced a record 40 teams will compete. Welcome to Yorkshire Chief Executive Sir Gary Verity shared the news at Y18 - the UK’s largest tourism event - in Bradford on Wednesday and revealed 20 men’s and women’s teams will be in action, up from 36 in 2017. Of those, 10 teams will be taking part for the very first time. The men’s race – which takes place between 3-6 May – will include six UCI WorldTour teams, seven Pro Continental outfits and six British squads, plus the new Yorkshire-based (although Irish registered) Holdsworth Pro Racing making their debut alongside Astana, Euskadi Basque Country – Murias, Rally Cycling and Vital Concept. The Asda Tour de Yorkshire Women’s Race on 3-4 May also boasts an expanded field. Seven of the 12 top-ranked teams in the world will be in action along with five further European and nine British squads. Of those, Boompods EDCo, Experza-Footlogix, NJC Biemme Echelon, Parkhotel Valkenburg and Team OnForm are new additions for 2018. Welcome to Yorkshire Chief Executive Sir Gary Verity said: “The demand from teams looking to compete in the Tour de Yorkshire is always high and that reflects the esteem in which our race is regarded. Reducing the number of riders per team from eight to seven in the men’s event meant we could invite more squads than ever before, and we also upped the number of women’s teams from 18 to 20 to ensure parity. “Having the best teams in the business coming to Yorkshire is a massive coup and we’re delighted to have a record number of British-based teams pitting themselves against the world’s finest riders. “Teams want to compete at the Tour de Yorkshire as they know they will be guaranteed massive crowds, exciting racing and an electric atmosphere. “Last year 2.2 million spectators lined the route and the fourth edition promises to be the biggest and best one yet.” The men’s and women’s team line-ups will be finalised in the fortnight before the race with a number of big-name attendees set to be unveiled in the coming weeks. The full list of teams for the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire is as follows: Six UCI WorldTour teams: Astana Pro Team (KAZ), BMC Racing Team (USA), Team Dimension Data (RSA), Team Katusha Alpecin (SUI), Team Sky (GBR) and Team Sunweb (GER). Friday 28 April 2017 Groenewegen wins opening stage at the 2017 Tour de Yorkshire History repeated itself at the Tour de Yorkshire with Dylan Groenewegen winning the opening stage for a second year in succession in sunny Scarborough. Huge crowds turned out in Bridlington to see the start of the third edition and bright conditions meant the county was at its brilliant best as the peloton wound its way through the Yorkshire Wolds and into the North York Moors before a frantic finish along North Bay in Scarborough. In total more than 400,000 people lined the roadside. Banners, bunting and a whole host of ingenious land art provided a brilliant backdrop as the riders toiled across the tough and testing parcours. An eight-man breakaway formed after 15km and Etienne Van Empel (Roompot), was the first of those riders to top the Côtes de Garrowby Hill and Goathland to earn himself a spell in the best climber’s jersey sponsored by Virgin Trains. The last escapees were finally caught with 8.3km to go, but before then the peloton had been split to shreds on the fearsome Côte de Robin Hood’s Bay. Groenewegen was one of several star sprinters to drop off the pace on that steep ascent but his LottoNL-Jumbo team-mates worked hard to bring him back into contention and the Dutch champion repaid that faith, just as he did in Settle last year. The 23 year old powered to the line and held off a late challenge from Orica-Scott’s Caleb Ewan once again for his first win of the season.

  • Thursday 26 April 2018 MORE STAR RIDERS CONFIRMED WITH
Thursday 26 April 2018 MORE STAR RIDERS CONFIRMED WITH ONE WEEK TO GO! With one week to go until the start of the 2018 Tour de Yorkshire, organisers Welcome to Yorkshire and the ASO have unveiled more star names who are set to compete between 3-6 May. Rio 2016 track gold medallist Owain Doull is set to be named in the Team Sky line up which includes British compatriot and two-time Omloop Het Nieuwsblad winner Ian Stannard. Three-time Tour de France stage winner Sylvain Chavanel (Direct Énergie) is also set to compete, as is French sprint star Bryan Coquard (Vital Concept), two-time Vuelta a Espana stage victor Magnus Cort Nielsen (Astana), and 2017 Tour de Yorkshire King of the Mountain Pieter Weening (Rompot-Nederlandse Loterij). There are no-less than 11 Yorkshire-based riders on the provisional start list, equalling the figure from 2017 despite UCI regulations seeing team sizes reduced from eight to seven riders to entice more exciting racing. These include Great Britain Cycling Team duo Ben Swift and Tom Pidcock who were announced on Wednesday. Ben’s cousin Connor will represent Madison Genesis while former British champions Adam Blythe (Aqua Blue Sport) and Russell Downing (Holdsworth Racing) will also be in action. These latest additions follow the big news earlier this month that Mark Cavendish (Team Dimension Data), Olympic road champion Greg Van Avermaet (BMC Racing) and defending Tour de Yorkshire champion Serge Pauwels (Team Dimension Data) will all be present for the fourth edition. Welcome to Yorkshire Chief Executive Sir Gary Verity is thrilled to have attracted such a strong field and is looking forward immensely to four exciting days of action.

KEY RIDER BIOS | WORLDTEAMS PROFILES WORLDTEAMS AG2R LA MONDIALE (FRA) In the top flight for the past 24 years, the French squad shone once more at this year’s Tour de France, with Romain Bardet— who’ll be among the stars racing here in Canada—finishing second in the general classification. A season‐win total stuck at six has taken some of the shine off that success, but the fact remains that Vincent Lavenu’s team has been influential all season long. Founded in: 1992. Wins in 2016 (as of Aug. 22): 6 RIDERS TO WATCH Romain Bardet (FRA): Age 24, turned pro in 2012. Palmarès: 5 wins including two stages of the Tour de France. This season: 1 win; 2nd in the Tour de France, 2nd in the Critérium du Dauphiné, 2nd in the Tour of Oman. In 2016, this French climbing specialist continued his impressive rise to the higher echelons of world cycling, proving that he was one of the few men who could give Chris Froome a run for his money, both in the Critérium du Dauphiné and the Tour de France. Though tired after the Rio Olympics, he’ll be eager for end‐of‐season success in Canada, where he has done well in the past (5th in Montréal in 2014, and 7th last year). Alexis Vuillermoz (FRA): Age 28, turned pro in 2013. Palmarès: 5 wins including Stage 8 of the 2015 Tour de France. This season: 2nd in the GP de Plumelec, 3rd in the French National Championships. A series of crashes and health worries have kept his former mountain biking specialist from fulfilling the promise of his exciting 2015 season.
