Andrei This dissertation examines the historical and artistic circumstances behind the emergence in late medieval Japan of a short-lived genre of painting referred to as sankei mandara (pilgrimage mandalas). The paintings are large-scale topographical depictions of sacred sites and served as promotional material for temples and shrines in need of financial support to encourage pilgrimage, offering travelers worldly and spiritual benefits while inspiring them to donate liberally. Itinerant monks and nuns used the mandara in recitation performances (etoki) to lead audiences on virtual pilgrimages, decoding the pictorial clues and touting the benefits of the site shown. Addressing themselves to the newly risen commoner class following the collapse of the aristocratic order, sankei mandara depict commoners in the role of patron and pilgrim, the first instance of them being portrayed this way, alongside warriors and aristocrats as they make their way to the sites, enjoying the local delights, and worship on the sacred grounds. Together with the novel subject material, a new artistic language was created— schematic, colorful and bold. We begin by locating sankei mandara’s artistic roots and influences and then proceed to investigate the individual mandara devoted to three sacred sites: Mt. Fuji, Kiyomizudera and Ise Shrine (a sacred mountain, temple and shrine, respectively). -

Mahmuda Laboratory of Aquatic Ecology, Faculty of Agriculture, Kochi University, B-200 Nankoku, Kochi 783-8502, Japan Abstract: Analyses of partial mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences support the classification of Aburahaya (Rhynchocypris lagowskii) from the Sea of Japan and Pacific Ocean. To investigate genetic population structure, we examine nucleotide sequence of the cytochrome b region. In this study we found three major geographical groups. Molecular phylogenetic analysis revealed that the population of the group 3 differentiation is 0.8759 ± 0.0333. The group 2 differentiation is 0.5333 ± 0.1801 which is collected from the Kamishyou River (Toyama Prefecture) and Hakui River (Ishikawa Prefecture) populations. The neighbor-joining tree of the mitochondrial DNA haplotypes for all specimens constructed from the Kimura’s two parameter. Among these 24 localities being clustered into 3 major geographic groups in NJ tree mtDNA segment and NJ tree mtDNA haplotype. No significant difference for the population pair wise FST was detected among these localities (P>0.05). The most parsimonious network of mtDNA haplotype of aburahaya 24 localities, estimated using the TCS algorithm. In this network showed three geographical groups. Halpotype 1-29 is one group, haplotype 30-33 is group 2 and haplotype 34-54 is group 3. Fowler Date Approved: 5 October 2018 ii Abstract This dissertation investigates a sculptural group of Enma and his entourage that was once enshrined in an Enma hall located within the Kyoto temple Rokuharamitsuji precinct, and hopes to highlight the role that significant yet understudied sculptures played in the development of the cult of Enma and the Ten Kings in premodern Japan. Rokuharamitsuji is of great importance to study the cult of Enma and the Ten Kings not only for its rare early sculptures of Enma and his two assistants created in the thirteenth century when the cult began to flourish in Japan, but also for the later addition of a seventeenth-century Datsueba sculpture, which reveals the evolution of the cult through its incorporation of Japanese popular belief. This study examines how the Rokuharamitsuji sculptural group presented images of hell within a designated space and conveyed messages of salvation to their beholders, responding to the environs of the salvation- oriented temple. -

Ninety-four named species of parasites (18 Protozoa, 5 Monogenea, 21 Trematoda, 7 Cestoidea, 19 Nematoda, 15 Acanthocephala, 1 Hirudinoidea, 1 Mollusca, 1 Branchiura, 5 Copepoda, 1 Isopoda) have been reported, and numerous other parasites not identified to species level are also included. The Parasite-Host list, arranged on a taxonomic basis, includes for each parasite species its currently recognized scientific name, and synonyms oc- curring in the literature, habitat (freshwater or marine), location of infection (site) within the host, species of host(s), known geographical distribution in Japanese waters, and the published source for each host and locality record. Where neces- sary, remarks and footnotes dealing with such topics as taxonomy, nomenclature, and misidentifications are included. The Host-Parasite list summarizes the species of parasites from each species of salmonid and their geographical distributions. Although taxonomic revision is not the aim of the checklist, the following three new combinations and one new synonym are proposed : Microsporidium takedai (Awa- kura, 1974) n. comb. for Nosemu tukedui ; Sterliudochonu ephemeridurum (Linstow, 1872) n. comb. for Cystidicoloides ephemeridurum ; and Salvelinema ishii (Fujita, 1941) new synonym of S. salvelini (Fujita, 1939) n. comb. for Metabronemu salvelini. This work aims to describe the geotourism potential of the region based on the significant rock exposures, and sets out the basis for establishing geosites in this region in the future. Geologically important sites have been selected, together with places of unique history and culture within the northern part of the eastern Kii Peninsula, including the Ise and Toba areas. The results of this study include a detailed description of the geology and history of the region, together with an evaluation of the relative value of each selected locality as a geosite. Proper development and promotion of the proposed sites would make the sites available for education and tourism, and provide opportunities for suitable development and the popularization of geological knowledge. This work is licensed under the Creative Commons Attribution International License (CC BY). http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/ Abstract In this study, we examined the influences of the differences in basin scale and river-crossing structures of 8 rivers of Ise Bay in Mie and Aichi Prefectures, Japan on the vegetation in the estua- rine tidal flats of these rivers. The dominant plant communities of the estuarine tidal flats formed from rivers of large-scale river basins (exceeding 300 km2) were determined. In the Miya River, the dominant plant community was the Suaeda maritima and Artemisia fukudo community. In the Kushida River, the dominant plant community was composed of Phacelurus latifolius, Artemisia fukudo, Phragmites australis, and bamboo. In the Kumozu River, the dominant community was composed of the coastal plants Calystegia soldanella, Lathyrus japonicus, and Carex pumila and the exotic plant of Lolium multiflorum. The plant community of Suzuka River was dominated by the exotic plant of Eragrostis curvula. -
