• A World Like Ours: Gay Men in Japanese Novels and Films
A WORLD LIKE OURS: GAY MEN IN JAPANESE NOVELS AND FILMS, 1989-2007 by Nicholas James Hall A THESIS SUBMITTED IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY in THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE AND POSTDOCTORAL STUDIES (Asian Studies) THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA (Vancouver) December 2013 © Nicholas James Hall, 2013 Abstract This dissertation examines representations of gay men in contemporary Japanese novels and films produced from around the beginning of the 1990s so-called gay boom era to the present day. Although these were produced in Japanese and for the Japanese market, and reflect contemporary Japan’s social, cultural and political milieu, I argue that they not only articulate the concerns and desires of gay men and (other queer people) in Japan, but also that they reflect a transnational global gay culture and identity. The study focuses on the work of current Japanese writers and directors while taking into account a broad, historical view of male-male eroticism in Japan from the Edo era to the present. It addresses such issues as whether there can be said to be a Japanese gay identity; the circulation of gay culture across international borders in the modern period; and issues of representation of gay men in mainstream popular culture products. As has been pointed out by various scholars, many mainstream Japanese representations of LGBT people are troubling, whether because they represent “tourism”—they are made for straight audiences whose pleasure comes from being titillated by watching the exotic Others portrayed in them—or because they are made by and for a female audience and have little connection with the lives and experiences of real gay men, or because they circulate outside Japan and are taken as realistic representations by non-Japanese audiences.

  • Prodigals in Love: Narrating Gay Identity and Collectivity on the Early Internet in China
Prodigals in Love: Narrating Gay Identity and Collectivity on the Early Internet in China by Gang Pan A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Gang Pan 2015 Prodigals in Love: Narrating Gay Identity and Collectivity on the Early Internet in China Gang Pan Doctor of Philosophy Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto 2015 Abstract This dissertation concerns itself with the eruption of a large number of gay narratives on the Chinese internet in its first decade. There are two central arguments. First, the composing and sharing of narratives online played the role of a social movement that led to the formation of gay identity and collectivity in a society where open challenges to the authorities were minimal. Four factors, 1) the primacy of the internet, 2) the vernacular as an avenue of creativity and interpretation, 3) the transitional experience of the generation of the internet, and 4) the evolution of gay narratives, catalyzed by the internet, enhanced, amplified, and interacted with each other in a highly complicated and accelerated dynamic, engendered a virtual gay social movement. Second, many online gay narratives fall into what I term “prodigal romance,” which depicts gay love as parent-obligated sons in love with each other, weaving in violent conflicts between desire and duty in its indigenous context. The prodigal part of this model invokes the archetype of the Chinese prodigal, who can only return home having excelled and with the triumph of his journey.

  • Carmilla and Affect in Contemporary Lesbian Fandom
Lesbian Feelings and Fandoms: Carmilla and Affect in Contemporary Lesbian Fandom by Sneha Shilip Kumar A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Film Studies Carleton University Ottawa, Ontario © 2020, Sneha Shilip Kumar Abstract My thesis explores the contemporary lesbian web series as being similar to fanfiction and its fandom as an affective community built on a set of inclusions and exclusions. My case study is Carmilla (Canada, Spencer Maybee 2014-2016), a YouTube web series shot in vlog format, and its lesbian fandom. I argue that Carmilla challenges the genres of the gothic and lesbian vampire in ways similar to fanfiction. Building on the work of fan studies scholars Katrin Döveling and Louisa Stein, I propose that affective bonds are created between Carmilla fans through various kinds of online activities and these flows of affect are influenced by the race and location of fans. My experiences at the first CarmillaCon in Toronto suggest that the online and offline Carmilla fandom both create and reflect each other. i Acknowledgements I am grateful to the Carmilla fandom for many reasons: giving me community when I thought I had none; allowing me to feel acceptance when I felt uncomfortable in my own skin; getting me through long nights filled with many assignments; and finally, providing me with the resources to successfully write my thesis. There are so many people I have to thank for giving me the strength and guidance to finish this project. First and foremost, I am indebted to my supervisor, Dr.

It extends queer theory to the texts as a way to expand them beyond the limits of their original sociocultural publication contexts. This thesis examines models of reproduction, queer embodiment, and world-building in The Well of Loneliness, lesbian pulp fiction, and radical feminist manifestos in order to examine how the authors write worlds beyond the limits of liberal feminist propriety, and imagine radical queer futures through oozing poetic sensibilities. “Feet Down, New Planet” contributes to queer theories of excess by mapping a cartographic and affective history of queer literary excess, and curates the exorbitant world-building frameworks Radclyffe Hall, Valerie Taylor, Jill Johnston, and Valerie Solanas imagine. iii TABLE OF CONTENTS Introduction: Feet Down…………………………………………………………………...... 1 Chapter I: Flesh Temporalities: Womb as Queer Counterpublic in The Well of Loneliness… 4 Introduction: The Well of Loneliness………………………………………………….. 4 Situating the Womb………………………………………………………………….

  • Learning from Other Movements: Gay Liberation and Recovery Advocacy
Hill, T. & White, W. (2015). Learning from other movements: Gay liberation and recovery advocacy. Posted at www.williamwhitepapers.com Learning from other Movements: Gay Liberation and Recovery Advocacy Tom Hill and William White1 Introduction For participants of the current recovery advocacy movement, there is much to learn from previous social movements. Lessons of considerable import can be gleaned from the movements that intersected in the 1960s, including the civil rights movement, the black power movement, the new left and anti-war movements, the women’s movement, and the gay liberation movement. While all of these are worthy of study, the gay liberation movement holds certain parallels, strategies, and lessons that may be of particular interest. This is due in large part to the societal myths and misunderstandings of both people who have experienced addiction and those with diverse sexual orientations and gender identities. The stigma attached to these groups has often rendered them expendable and, as a result, has forced them into hiding their experiences and identities. Members of the gay community, most prominently Bayard Rustin, played critical roles in the civil rights movement and later drew upon the lessons of the civil rights movement in the same way that members of the recovery advocacy movement are now drawing upon their experience within earlier social movements. Because the societal stigma and discrimination targeting these two groups have been so severe, they share similarities in the early stages of building a movement of social justice and change. The gay liberation movement – now inclusive of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) lives and identities – currently has 45 years of organizing and movement-building experience compared to the new recovery advocacy movement that emerged in the late 1990s and was formally organized at the 2001 recovery summit in St.
