This Report is not comprehensive and covers information received as of reporting date. Situation Summary and Highlights ❒ As of 21 March 2021 (12:00 pm), there have been 3574 COVID-19 cases and 36 COVID-19 deaths reported in Papua New Guinea. From the period of 15 to 21 March, there were 1305 newly reported cases including 15 new deaths. This is the seventh consecutive week of increasing cases, and more than double the previous highest number of cases reported in a single week in PNG. ❒ The total number of provinces that have reported COVID-19 cases to date is twenty. Only Manus and Oro (Northern) Provinces have not reported cases to date. ❒ Public Health Unit at Doherty Institute in Australia has conducted whole genome sequencing on positive test samples sent from PNG and no variants of concern have been identified in sequencing conducted to date. ❒ The COVID-19 Hotline has experienced a 33.83% increase in calls since the last fortnight and the rate of health-related calls being referred to the Rapid Response Teams and PHAs has also increased by 33% from the prior week. ❒ This week the Australian government will deploy an Australian Medical Assistance Team (AUSMAT) to undertake assessments and Please note: Due to data cleaning, the number of critical planning for a potential full deployment cases may not add up exactly from last week.

    Seacology Mission: Described as “arks of biodiversity,” the world’s islands harbor vastly more endangered species than any other region on earth. The United Nations declared 2010 the International Year of Biodiversity, bringing the critical mission of species preservation to the forefront of the global environmental movement. Seacology is an international organization working exclusively on islands for benefit of island peoples and biodiversity. Island environments provide homes and livelihoods for fully one tenth of the world’s population, including many developing nations and indigenous communities struggling to make simple gains in their quality of life. Seacology’s intimate collaboration with islanders is the most effective way to rescue these vanishing cultures, wildlife, and habitats. Our funds go directly to island communities and local organizations, using a grassroots, win-win approach that tackles environmental problems at their core. Seacology believes conservation and humanitarian aid are indelibly linked. We work with island communities to establish nature reserves while supporting basic needs such as renovations to schools, provision of medical supplies, or construction of fresh water systems. Our projects defend species and ecosystems, uplift island communities, promote locally based conservation, and foster long- term environmental stewardship. Funded in partnership by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) and ANU, DPA (formerly known as the State, Society and Governance in Melanesia (SSGM) Program) is the leading international centre for applied multidisciplinary research and analysis concerning Melanesia and the broader Pacific. For the past 25 years, Haley has conducted deep, long-term empirical and applied policy-relevant research in Papua New Guinea (PNG) and has published extensively on aspects of political and social conflict. Her PhD entitled Ipakana Yakaiya: Mapping Landscapes, Mapping Lives – Contemporary Land Politics among the Duna, was an innovative and landmark study, which was awarded the 2003 ANU Crawford Prize for Academic Excellence. Haley has observed the past five national elections in PNG and has led large scale election observations in PNG, Solomon Islands and Samoa. In 2014 she received the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Public Policy and Outreach, in recognition of her substantial public policy contribution to the “areas of women’s empowerment and political participation, electoral monitoring and electoral reform”. Dr Kerry Zubrinich is a Research Fellow with DPA, ANU. For the past 30 years her research has centred on aspects of social life in Melanesia, with the peoples of PNG and the indigenous peoples of West Papua her key research focus.
