Hymn: Angels From the Realms of Glory...... ELH 114 1. Angels from the realms of glory, 3. Sages, leave your contemplations, Wing your flight o’er all the earth, Brighter visions beam afar; Ye who sang creation’s story Seek the great Desire of nations, Now proclaim Messiah’s birth: Ye have seen His natal star. Come and worship, Come and worship, Come and worship, Come and worship, Worship Christ, the newborn King. Worship Christ the newborn King.

2. Shepherds in the fields abiding, 4. Saints before the altar bending, Watching o’er your flocks by night, Watching long in hope and fear, God with man is now residing, Suddenly the Lord, descending Yonder shines the Infant-Light. In His temple shall appear. Come and worship, come and worship, Come and worship, Come and worship, Worship Christ the newborn King. Worship Christ the newborn King.

3 Glory, Glory, Glory to the Newborn King Spiritual, M. Hogan, arr. K. Rodde, 2017 What will we call that pretty little baby? Baby born in Bethlehem. What will we call that pretty little baby? Christ the Lord, the newborn King. Where was He born, this pretty little baby? Down in a lowly manger. Where His birth was in a stable. Christ the Lord, the newborn King. Born this night, the Son of Mary. Hail the heav’n-born Prince of peace. Glory to the newborn King.

Children, Go and tell it on the mountain, Lord, over the hills and everywhere. Why don’t you go, yes, tell it on the mountain, Lord, that Jesus Christ is born. See the newborn baby. Glory, glory, glory to the newborn King! All praise to the newborn King! We’re singin’ over hill and mountain, Hail, the newborn King!

Based on Spiritual “Go tell it on the mountain,” additional words M. Hogan 1957-2003

Lesson: John 1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him everything was made, and without him not one thing was made that has been made. In him was life, and the life was the light of mankind. The light is shining in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

There was a man, sent from God, whose name was John. He came as an eyewitness to testify about the light so that everyone would believe through him. He was not the light, but he came to testify about the light.

The real light that shines on everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not recognize him. He came to what was his own, yet his own people did not accept him. But to all who did receive him, to those who believe in his name, he gave the right to become children of God. They were born, not of blood, or of the desire of the flesh, or of a husband’s will, but born of God.

The Word became flesh and dwelled among us. We have seen his glory, the glory he has as the only-begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.

4 People, Look East Besançon, arr. C. Courtney, 2017 People, look East, the time is near of the crowning of the year, Make your house fair as you are able, Trim the hearth and set the table, People, look East, and sing today; Love, the Guest, is on the way.

Furrows, be glad. Though earth is bare, one more seed is planted there; Give up your strength the seed to nourish, That in course the flow’r may flourish. People, look East, and sing today. Love, the Rose, is on the way.

Birds, though ye long have ceased to build, guard the nest that must be filled. Even the hour when wings are frozen He for fledging time has chosen. People, look East, and sing today: Love, the Bird, is on the way.

Stars, keep the watch. When night is dim one more light the bowl shall brim. Shining beyond the frosty weather, Bright as sun and moon together. People, look East, and sing today: Love, the Star, is on the way.

Angels, announce to man and beast Him who cometh from the East. Set ev’ry peak and valley humming With the word the Lord is coming. People, look East, and sing today. Love, the Lord, is on the way. E. Farjeon, 1881-1965

What Child is This? ...... ELH 145: 1, 2 1. What child is this, who, laid to rest, On Mary’s lap is sleeping? Whom angels greet with anthems sweet, While shepherds watch are keeping? This, this is Christ the King, Whom shepherds guard and angels sing; Haste, haste to bring Him laud, The Babe, the Son of Mary! 2. Why lies He in such mean estate Where ox and ass are feeding? Good Christians, fear; for sinners here The silent Word is pleading. Nails, spear shall pierce Him through, The cross be borne for me, for you; Hail, hail the Word made flesh, The Babe, the Son of Mary! 5 He Sleeps in Peace Brazilian Melody, setting by H. Morris, 2009 The child sleeps tonight in a crude cradle stall. He’s peaceful and quiet, the Savior of all. His mother and angels sing sweet lullabies; And, whelmed by His silence, His sweet mother sighs.

His father and mother both watch Him with love, And hear praises floating from heaven above; The praise-shouting angels and shepherds as one Announcing the Child’s birth, His work just begun.

The wise kings have followed the night’s brightest start, Their gifts brought in honor from kingdoms afar. Without that night’s bright star, our night’s light is dim; We find light on journeys of following Him. B. Morris

Toccata B.M. Culli, 2006 Pat-a-Pan French Carol, arr. G. M. Pysh

Lesson: 1 John 1 That which was from the beginning, which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have observed and our hands have touched regarding the Word of Life—the life appeared, and we have seen it. We testify and proclaim to you the eternal life, which was with the Father and has appeared to us. We are proclaiming what we have seen and heard also to you, so that you may have fellowship with us. Our fellowship is with the Father and his Son Jesus Christ. We write these things to you so that our joy may be complete. This is the message we heard from him and proclaim to you: God is light. In him there is no darkness at all. If we say we have fellowship with him but still walk in darkness, we are lying and do not put the truth into practice. But if we walk in the light, just as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ, his Son, cleanses us from all sin.

7 Still, Still, Still. Austrian Carol, arr. N. Luboff, 1917-1987 Still, still, still, one can hear the falling snow. For all is hushed, the world is sleeping, Holy Star its vigil keeping. Still, still, still… Sleep, sleep, sleep, ‘tis the eve of our Savior’s birth. The night is peaceful all around you, close your eyes, let sleep surround you. Sleep, sleep, sleep… Dream, dream, dream of the joyous day to come. While guardian angels without number watch you as you sweetly slumber. Dream, dream, dream… M. Keith and A. Bergman, 1958

Hymn: O Jesus Christ, Thy Manger is My Paradise...... ELH 161: 1, 3 1. (Solo) O Jesus Christ, Thy manger is my paradise at which my soul reclineth. For there, O Lord, Doth lie the Word Made flesh for us– herein Thy grace forth shineth.

3. Thy light and grace Our guilt efface, Thy heav’nly riches all our loss retrieving. Immanuel, Thy birth doth quell The pow’r of hell and Satan’s bold deceiving.

O Holy Night A. Adam, 1847, arr. P. J. Christiansen, 1975 O holy night! The stars are brightly shining, It is the night of the dear Savior’s birth; Long lay the world in sin and error pining, Till he appeared and the soul felt its worth. A thrill of hope the weary soul rejoices, for yonder breaks a new and glorious morn; Fall on your knees, Oh, hear the angel voices! O night divine, O night when Christ was born! French carol, Minuit chretien, P. Cappeau, 1808-1877, English version by J. S. Dwight, 1855

Hymn: O Jesus Christ, Thy Manger is My Paradise...... ELH 161: 4 4. Thou Christian heart, Whoe’er thou art, Be of good cheer and let no sorrow move thee! For God’s own Child, in mercy mild, Joins thee to Him – how greatly God must love thee!

O Yule, Full of Gladness Norwegian Carol, arr. C. Jennings, 1976 O Yule, full of gladness and cheer and delight, We welcome you now with our singing. Our hearts open wide to the brilliance of light From heaven to earth you are bringing. With shepherds and wisemen your star we behold, Its brightness o’er Bethlehem beaming, And we too would follow, as prophets foretold, where light everlasting is streaming.

8 Now join hand in hand, and together we’ll welcome the Yule, and pledge love and faith to each other, For we all are bound by the love that we share, Rejoice every sister and brother! We merrily clap and sing, a happy welcome bring, So glad are we, so glad are we, for joy and love are born now at Christmas! Norwegian Traditional, O Jul med din glede, English version, C. Jennings

Masters In This Hall French Tune, arr. A. Parker and R. Shaw Masters in this hall, Hear ye news today Brought from over sea, And ever I you pray: Nowell! Nowell! Nowell! Nowell, sing we clear, Holpen are all folk on earth, Born is God’s Son so dear: Nowell! Nowell! Nowell! Nowell, sing we loud! God today hath poor folk raised And cast a-down the proud. Going o’er the hills, through the milk-white snow, heard I ewes bleat while the wind did blow: Then to Bethle’m town we went two and two, and in a sorry place heard the oxen low: Nowell! Therein did we see a sweet and goodly may and a fair old man, upon the straw she lay: And a little child on her arm had she, “Wot ye who this is?” said the hinds to me: Nowell! This is Christ the Lord, Masters be ye glad! Christmas is come in, and no folk should be sad: Nowell!

English Carol, W. Morris, 1860

A little Child, Thou art our Guest that weary ones in Thee may rest; Forlorn and lowly is Thy birth that we may rise to heav’n from earth. Alleluia!
