Film Surveyors Reach the Top: Siege-busting Roman Surveyor at Masada and the Oscar Winning Oil Surveyor John BROCK, Australia Keywords: Hollywood movies, main actor surveyor, 2008 Oscar, Masada siege, Roman Surveyor, television surveyors, surveying content reference system. SUMMARY Having collected film footage showing surveyors and surveying in many Hollywood style settings I was particularly delighted in 2008 to discover a movie release titled “There Will Be Blood” starring the great Irish actor Daniel Day-Lewis. Not only does Daniel carry out three separate scenes of survey work in the major role of the epic but he won the Academy Award for Best Actor in that part which has never happened in any of the movies in my collection. As an oil prospector he sets about conning landholders out of their holdings with the intention of extracting oil from their ground. During this process he undertakes his own survey work to locate the drilling rigs and identify the best sites for the likely mining of the black gold from the land. His ruthless character is strongly violent and after murdering one of his co-stars he engages in a very curious scene in which he uses the theodolite to monitor the progress of his shooting skills upon an arrangement of some of the ill-fated house crockery inside the residence ! During the siege of Masada in late 72 – early 73 A.D. the Roman Governor, Lucius Flavius Silva (played by Peter O’Toole in the movie of the same name re-enacting the event) was the commander of the Roman legion sent to evict the militant Jewish extremist group known as the Sicarii who had assumed occupation of the heavily fortified mountain-top garrison erected by Herod the Great between 37 and 31 B.C.

HANNAH M. COTTON THE DATE OF THE FALL OF MASADA: THE EVIDENCE OF THE MASADA PAPYRI aus: Zeitschrift für Papyrologie und Epigraphik 78 (1989) 157–162 © Dr. Rudolf Habelt GmbH, Bonn 157 THE DATE OF THE FALL OF MASADA: THE EVIDENCE OF THE MASADA PAPYRI1 Masada's fall is dated by month and day to 15 Xanthicus (Jos. BJ 7.401). The year 73 is arrived at by inference: the last date mentioned in the Bellum before the fall of Masada is the fourth year of Vespasian, i.e. July 72 to 30 June 73 (BJ 7. 219).2 15 Xanthicus 73 was, therefore, the traditional date, generally accepted3 until challenged twenty years ago by Eck, who proposed Spring 74 instead.4 His new date is based on a re-consideration of two inscriptions recording the career of the conqueror of Masada, L. Flavius Silva (AE 1969/70 183). The two inscriptions record the posts held by Silva in a strictly inverse chronological order, making it impossible for him to have become governor of Judaea before Spring 735 Hence the traditional date of Spring 73 for the fall of Masada can no longer be upheld.6 1 The papyri referred to here were excavated by Y. Yadin in 1963/4, see Y. Yadin, The Excavation of Masada 1963/4. Preliminary Report, IEJ 15 (1965), 110ff. They will be published in Masada: The Latin and Greek Documents, eds. Hannah M. The Length of the Siege of Masada1 Jonathan Roth Introduction The siege of Masada is generally considered a long and arduous one, lasting at least four to seven months,2 with estimates of its length ranging as high as three years.3 Indeed, the siege has been held up as an example of inspired resistance on the part of the Jews, and of persistent tenacity on the part of the Romans.4 The truth is less grandiose. Α careful analysis of the literary and archaeological evidence shows that although the arid locale and high cliffs of the fortress provided a logistical and engineering challenge for the Romans, overcoming them was well within the capability of a single legion and a few auxiliary units. Josephus’ account and the topography of the battle site suggest that little or no resistance could have been put forth by the small Jewish garrison.

CHAPTER 1 k The Siege of Masada (72– 73 or 73– 74 CE) n 72 or 73 CE, 967 Jewish refugees holding out atop Masada watched Ihelplessly as thousands of Roman soldiers surrounded the base of the mountain, cutting off all contact with the outside world. Our story of Masada begins at this critical moment: the siege of the fortress three years after the fall of Jerusalem. In this chapter we examine the Roman siege works and become acquainted with Josephus— the only ancient author who describes the siege of Masada. The Siege of Masada When the First Revolt erupted in 66, bands of Jewish rebels took over some of Herod the Great’s fortified palaces, which had been occupied and maintained by garrisons since the king’s death seventy years earlier. Three were still in Jewish hands after the revolt officially ended in 70: Herodium (near Bethlehem), Machaerus (to the east of the Dead Sea), and Masada. The Roman legate (governor) of the newly established prov- ince of Judea, Lucilius Bassus, set out to subdue these last holdouts. Limited information from Josephus and archaeological evidence suggest that Herodium was taken quickly. The rebels at Machaerus capitulated before the Romans commenced their assault, although Josephus de- scribes skirmishes between the two sides. The Roman circumvallation (siege) wall and ten or eleven siege camps are still visible surrounding For general queries, contact [email protected] © Copyright, Princeton University Press.

3D Documentation for the Study of the UNESCO Site of Masada: Methodologies and Applied Research for the Analysis of Roman Fields SANDRO PARRINELLO, Università di Pavia, Italy DANIELE BURSICH, Università di Milano, Italy The Masada Research Project – MRP – is a research project for the development of documentation methods of the archaeological area of Masada through digital technologies promoted by the "Landscape Survey & Design" laboratory of the University of Pavia and Florence, in collaboration with Department of Interior Building and Environment Design – Shenkar College of Israel with the participation of a researcher of University of Milan. MRP saw numerous campaigns conducted on site by a multidisciplinary team to detect the entire plateau and surrounding Roman camps. The project defined experimental methodologies by combining and integrating different data acquisition techniques, for the construction of reliable 3D models useful for developing and managing cultural heritage. The data collected, systematized into a digital archive formed a database of photos and drawings useful for digital and virtual reconstruction, which illustrates site conditions at the various evolutionary stages of Masada. During the third documentation campaign (2015), were been measured buildings present on the plateau and some Roman camps, (the H camp and the F2 - “Silva Camp”). Thanks to an in- depth archaeological study it was possible to make some interesting proposals for architectural reconstruction of some military buildings, connected with the historical picture of the site.
