3 Update to ISIS v5.0.1: Support for Windows 10 Clients

Update to ISIS v5.0.1: Support for Windows 10 Clients

The ISIS v5.0.1 release has now been qualified to work with clients running 10.

The v5.0.1 kit includes a new driver version for Intel PRO/1000 NICs in Windows 10 systems. See “Intel Ethernet Drivers” on page 9 for more information.

New in Avid ISIS v5.0.1

The Avid ISIS v5.0.1 release includes the following improvements and fixes.

Support for OS X 10.11 “El Capitan”

This release supports using OS X 10.11 (called El Capitan) on client systems. The v5.0.1 kit includes a new Myricom driver for OS X 10.11 systems, in the following location:

\Drivers\ISIS Client\Myricom\myri10ge-1.3.5avid-1500-macosx10.9_10.10_10.11.dmg

Media Composer Issue

This release fixes an issue found on some clients using Media Composer (various versions) with files stored on an ISIS | 1000; in certain I/O playback patterns, Media Composer could stop responding and leave a running process that could not be terminated. Affected clients had to reboot to stop the unresponsive Media Composer process.

Improved Calculation for Disk Partitioning

This release improves the way space is calculated and reported on the 2TB media drives. This enhancement frees up an additional 604GiB (648GB) of usable space on the system, providing 14.36TiB (15.794TB) of total usable space. The additional space is available on new systems and when rebinding a Media Pack on an existing system.

To take advantage of this improvement, do the following: 1. Install v5.0.1. 2. Back up all media on all Workspaces. 3. Delete all Workspaces. 4. Delete the Storage Group. 5. Unbind the Media Packs. 6. Rebind the Media Packs. The additional space is now available.

For more information on binding Media Packs, see the Avid ISIS 1000 Setup and Maintenance Guide.

Support for ATTO ThunderLink™ 10 GbE Adapters for Mac

This release introduces the ISIS | 1000, a 2U chassis with two system drives and one Media Pack (10 drives, 2TB each). The system supports the following: • Up to four ISIS | 1000 Engines in one system, for a total of four Media Packs (40 data drives) • Approximately 300 MB/s disk bandwidth per Media Pack for all reads • Approximately 240 MB/s disk bandwidth per Media Pack for all writes (write performance in the Management Console is lower than the actual bandwith by a multiplier of 1.25 to account for RAID6 parity writes) • Aggregate mix of 50/50 reads and writes is approximately 270 MB/s disk bandwidth per Media Pack • Approximately 1.2 GB/s system bandwidth (in a four Engine system) • Up to 30 connected clients (24 active) • Up to 3 million files (and directories)

ISIS | 1000 Specific Software

The v5.0 release runs only on the ISIS | 1000 platform. In addition, the v5.0 client software connects only to ISIS | 1000 systems.

5 Hardware and Software Requirements

Hardware and Software Requirements

To meet the stringent needs of media applications the ISIS family of storage solutions is built using patented intellectual property in ISIS software running on Avid ISIS hardware. Avid tests and qualifies configurations of Avid ISIS software deployed on Avid ISIS hardware. The ISIS System Director is designed to allow the binding of Avid ISIS storage only. Avid has not published its ISIS file system specifications, protocols, or ISIS file system API’s used among the components of the file system (ISIS System Director, ISIS client, ISIS storage expansion engines) and these are subject to change without notice. Therefore, any connection of third party storage as part of an ISIS file system is not a licensed, approved or supported configuration.

Known Issues

The following are known issues with the Avid ISIS software. When a workaround exists, it appears in the paragraph directly following the issue description.

ISIS System Issues (Initial Setup)

The following issues exist in the factory-installed ISIS software, and might be seen during initial system setup and configuration. After you configure the ISIS | 1000 and upgrade to the v5.0 release kit available on the Avid download site, these issues will no longer be present.

10 Known Issues

➤ The Chrome browser does not work well with the Avid ISIS Agent interface. Avid recommends using safari, Internet Explorer, or Firefox to open the ISIS Agent.

➤ Perform the initial configuration in one browser session. Do not close the browser part way through and return later to complete it. Doing so can cause unexpected results.

➤ During initial configuration, the Agent page does not indicate which fields are required and which are optional. The following fields are required: • Storage System Name — This is the name of the ISIS shared storage system, whether it consists of one or up to four Engines. If you are configuring multiple Engines into different shared storage systems, each one must have a unique Storage System Name. • Hostname — Each Storage Controller (one in each Engine) must have a unique name. • IP address, Netmask, and Gateway — These are assigned to the Storage Controller in each Engine. If multiple (up to four) Engines belong to the same shared storage system, each Controller must have a unique IP address, but they must use the same Netmask and Gateway. If you are configuring Engines into different shared storage systems, each shared storage system must be on a different subnet from the others. (The Netmask and Gateway for each shared storage system must be different from the Netmask and Gateway used by the others.)

➤ During initial configuration, the Agent page allows you to enter invalid characters in some fields (for example, Storage System Name, Address, Netmask, and Gateway). The Agent performs no checking for valid characters. However, if you enter an invalid name or IP address during configuration, the setup will fail.

Workaround: When configuring a new ISIS | 1000 system, make sure to use only valid characters in these fields, as follows: • Storage System Name, Hostname — Up to 25 English alphanumeric characters; must start and end with a letter (a - z, and A - Z) or number; can contain a dash or hyphen (-). n The system allows you to enter more than 25 characters for the Storage System Name and Hostname, but doing so can result in unexpected behavior. Limit the Storage System Name and Hostname to 25 characters or fewer.

• IP address, Netmask, and Gateway — An IPv4 address, in the form xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx, where any sequence of xxx (called an octet) can be a number from 0 to 255. The value of the first octet (the first sequence of xxx in the full IP address string) cannot be 0. The address must be one that will be recognized in your network environment.

➤ During initial configuration, be careful when entering the values for the IP address, netmask, and gateway. These are on the General page of the setup wizard, under the heading Data Interfaces.

In any network, a range of addresses is available for assignment to different servers and systems in that network. The range is defined by the Network IP Address, which is the starting value, and the Broadcast IP address, which is the ending value of the range. For example, a range can be from 192.168.10.0 through 192.168.10.255. Do not use these addresses for the ISIS system; use a value within that range, such as 192.168.10.1 through 192.168.10.254, inclusive.

Using either the starting or ending IP address value can make the ISIS system unreachable after it reboots.

Workaround: Rerun the Agent setup wizard and enter valid for the IP addresses.

11 Known Issues

➤ During initial configuration, the Agent page does not support entering names for NTP servers in your environment. You must use the NTP server IP addresses only.

➤ During initial configuration, when choosing a time zone (instead of using an NTP server), the Indiana (East) time zone erroneously sets the system time zone to Alaska.

Workaround: To set the system time zone to Indiana, choose Eastern instead of Indiana (East).

➤ During initial configuration, especially when configuring the system time, a popup message might appear indicating that the system must reboot for the change to complete. You can ignore this message. The system does not reboot until the initial setup is complete and you are installing the v5.0 software downloaded from the support site.

Workaround: If a dialog box appears about an action causing the system to reboot, click Cancel, and complete the rest of the configuration and software installation.

➤ During initial configuration, when optionally configuring a DNS server, you cannot use IP addresses in the DNS Server List field. In addition, you must separate the DNS server names with a space; for example, test.local test.test2.local

➤ During initial configuration, when entering a password, the setup wizard allows you to enter a password longer than 8 characters. However, only the first 8 characters are used to authenticate at login. Any characters beyond the first 8 are ignored.

Workaround: Enter a password of 8 characters or fewer.

➤ During initial configuration, to enter an optional Enclosure ID, you must use the number keys in the main typing keypad; you cannot use the numeric/directional keypad (if present). In addition, the Enclosure ID can be a maximum of two digits (0-99). The Agent page does not prevent you from entering a 3-digit number, but only a 2-digit number can be displayed on the Engine control panel.

➤ If an ISIS software upgrade is interrupted, you must restart the Engine before attempting to run the upgrade again.

ISIS System Issues

The following issues exist in the v5.0 release kit available on the Avid download site.

➤ If you resize your browser window while the Management Console is open, the screen might not rescale properly, and drop-down menus and their mouse controls might not work properly.

Workaround: If possible, always keep the browser window sized as large as possible to best display the Management Console.

➤ In the Management Console, the System Logs page displays only the last (most recent) 5000 lines of logs in the table. Older log statements are not displayed.

➤ In the Agent, on the Advanced tab, in the Storage Engine section, when you click All Disks to select any disk to make its LED blink (click the Toggle LED button), if you then click Disks under the Media Pack heading, the page displays only the system Disks instead of the Media Pack disks.

Workaround: Log out of the Agent, then log back in to refresh the Media Pack disks display.

12 Known Issues

➤ When the Engine starts up or reboots, the Media Packs are initialized. During this time, they report a status of Initializing, but might also report an error of Disk Full. You can ignore this error; it goes away when the initialization completes.

➤ When looking at switch statistics for the Dell N2024, Dell N3024, and NETGEAT XS712T, you might see the OutDiscard counter (on Dell switches) or the Transmit Packets Discarded counter (on the NETGEAR switch) incrementing. This is acceptable as long as the rate of discards is no more than 1% of the total packets transmitted, or as long as workflows are not experiencing any dropped frames.

➤ In a multi-Engine ISIS system, after you upgrade the software on the Storage Controller in the first Engine (the System Director), you can upgrade the other Engines (Storage Controllers) through the Management Console. However, this functionality is not working in the Beta version.

Workaround: On the additional Engines, open the Agent and install the upgrade software from the System tab, Configuration heading, Install link.

➤ On an ISIS | 1000 system with a single Workspace, if you move the resize slider all the way to the right, the resize handle disappears, and you are unable to move it back to the left.

Workaround: Do either of the following: Move the slider to the left, then you can zoom in again to the original scale. • Click the Zoom out button on the Workspace size heading until the resize handle becomes visible again. • Change the Workspace size in the Details panel. When the Workspace is resized, the resize handle becomes available.

➤ The Management Console allows you to open the Agent by double-clicking a Media Pack name, disk name, Storage Controller name, or IP address in the Details pane for Engines, Media Packs, or Storage Controllers. However, on a Mac OS X system using the Safari browser, double-clicking names (Media Pack, Disk, or Storage Controller) does not work.

Workaround: Open the Agent by double-clicking an IP address in the Details pane in the Management Console, or by entering the Agent IP address directly in a new Safari browser window, using the address: https://IP_address:5015

➤ When accessing the Storage Manager agent using a Chrome browser, you might receive a “This web page is not available” message.

Workaround: Press the F5 key. When page reloads, on the “Site’s Security certificate is not trusted” window click Proceed anyway.

Client Issues

The following are known issues with the Avid ISIS v5.0 client software. When a workaround exists, it appears in the paragraph directly following the issue description. The ISIS infrastructure issues are documented in the individual sections.

➤ On a client running Mac OS X using a 2 x 1Gb connection to the ISIS | 1000 system, 1:1 10 bit 1080i 59.94 captures can fail due to intermittent long large writes.

➤ During Media Pack rebuilds the Engine performance might not reach the full Engine rating.

13 Known Issues

➤ If one workspace in Client Manager is mounted by Mapping a Network drive in Windows, when you unmount the workspace and then mount a different workspace in Client Manager manually using the same drive letter, Windows Explorer displays the previous workspace name instead of the new workspace name.

➤ The estimated amount of space available (usually measured in an amount of time at a particular resolution) might differ between what Avid ISIS calculates and what the Avid editing system calculates. Avid ISIS accurately reports the amount of space available for file storage. The Avid editing application accounts for overhead in formatting of the media and is more conservative in reporting how much space is available.

➤ The Macintosh might display the Avid ISIS folder contents incorrectly, such as the contents of folders containing items whose name includes a pound sign (#) followed by numeric characters. For example, “project # 12” might be erroneously displayed with some items duplicated and some items missing.

Workaround: Avid recommends avoiding the use of names that include a pound sign (#) followed by numeric characters.

➤ Do not disconnect the PCI interface cable from either a Nitris DX or Mojo DX while it is powered up on the Macintosh editing system. If Avid ISIS is running on this system and the cable is removed, the Macintosh produces a kernel panic and reports ISIS as the problem. You must power down Macintosh before removing the PCI interface cable between the Macintosh and the Nitris DX or Mojo DX. The only way to power down the Nitris DX or Mojo DX system is to shut down the client connected to it.

➤ The Path Diagnostics customized setting for Posix tests does not work correctly on the Macintosh clients.

Workaround: Use the default option to automatically select the File Access Method instead.

Documentation Issues

The following are known issues with the Avid ISIS v5.0 documentation. • The v5.0 Client Manager help button opens the Avid ISIS v4.7 Client help files. In the Client help, disregard references to the following, as they do not apply to this release: - Windows 32-bit, Windows XP and Linux; these client operating systems are not supported in v5.0 - Client licensing - Data Migration Utility - ISIS 7500-07000, ISIS 5500-5000, and ISIS 2500-2000 • The v5.0 Client Guide, available in PDF format on the Avid Support Knowledge Base page and from the Client Manager help link, contains the following errors or omissions: - In addition to the Myricom and Intel PRO network adapters mentioned in the Client Guide, Avid ISIS | 1000 also supports the on-board Intel NICs in the most of the supported client platforms listed in the Avid Configuration Guidelines and Slot Configurations article on the Knowledge Base. - On page 3, under Network Adapter and Driver Installation, the Client Guide says: Most Windows® editing clients require the 1 Gb Intel® Pro/1000 PT or PF Ethernet network adapter to connect to the Avid ISIS system, even if the clients are connected to an external switch. This sentence should read: Most Windows® editing clients require the 1 Gb Intel® Pro/1000 PT or PF Ethernet network adapter to connect to the Avid ISIS system.

14 Special Notes

ISIS | 1000 clients must connect to a switch; direct connection between clients and the ISIS | 1000 is not supported. - On page 5, step 1 in Updating the Myricom Driver on Macintosh Clients, the location of the Myri10GE-xx.dmg file should say: \Drivers\ISIS Client\Myricom.

Special Notes

This section contains important information about the Avid ISIS environment.

User Permissions

A User account with Administrator privileges is required to install Avid ISIS client software on your workstations.

LDAP Requires ASCII User Names and Passwords

The Avid implementation of LDAP (Lightweight Directory Access Protocol) requires that you restrict LDAP user names and passwords to ASCII. The LDAP/ISIS Account Synchronizer searches for groups and their users on an LDAP server and synchronizes (reconciles) user and group accounts by adding or removing users and/or groups from ISIS.

Fast User Switching Not Supported

Fast User Switching is a Windows feature that allows multiple user accounts to log on to a computer simultaneously. Fast User Switching is enabled by default in Windows computers. The Fast User Switching feature and multiple concurrent logged on user modes are not supported in the Avid ISIS environment. The ISIS software does not distinguish the different drive letters mapped to the same workspaces on the same computer. Conflicts appear in the following two scenarios: • When one user maps a drive letter to one workspace and another user maps the same drive letter to a different workspace • When one user maps a workspace to one drive letter, and another user maps a different drive letter for the same workspace.

Multiple ISIS Systems Must be on Separate Networks

If you are setting up multiple ISIS shared storage systems, make sure that each system is on a separate network. Putting multiple ISIS systems on the same subnet can lead to unpredictable results and is not supported.

Macintosh Resource Files and Windows Clients

If Macintosh files are copied to a Windows system with the Macintosh files, the resource fork files cannot be copied to mounted workspaces from a Windows client. Avid ISIS does not accept Macintosh resource fork files from Windows clients. Appropriate “properties” error messages are displayed if this is attempted.

15 Special Notes

Adobe Premiere Pro

Avid has tested Adobe Premiere Pro as a client in the ISIS | 1000 environments. Adobe Premiere was qualified on Windows 7 64-bit and Macintosh v10.9.5 and v10.10.3 operating systems.

Adobe Premiere clients follow the same guidelines as for Avid editors in regard to the Avid ISIS Client Manager Preference settings. The default Client Type setting is set to Medium Resolution (limited to resolutions that draw 16 MB/s or less). Use the High Resolution setting when working with High Definition media (resolutions that draw higher than 16 MB/s). There are some HD resolutions that draw less than 16 MB/s for a single stream, but you should still use the High Resolution setting (for example, XDCAMHD 50). For more information, see the Knowledge Base at www.avid.com/support.

Final Cut Pro X Software

Avid has tested as a client in the ISIS | 1000 environments. There is no Avid restriction on the QuickTime version. Use the QuickTime version recommended in the Final Cut Pro application. Avid ISIS supports Final Cut Pro X Macintosh clients in Switched Media Network (Layer 2), Routed Media Network (Layer 3), and Non-media Optimized Network (Mixed Layer 2 and 3) environments.

Uninterruptible Power Supply

Avid highly recommends using an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) with all Avid ISIS components.

Without a UPS if you lose power while capturing media, you might lose some data for newly captured media.
