Nonreligious Cultures and Communities in the United States 3000/4000 Level Course in Sociology Jacqui Frost **This is an updated version of a course I helped develop and teach in the sociology department at the University of Minnesota with Penny Edgell in 2016. This course was developed to be an upper-division course for juniors and seniors and could easily be cross-listed with religious studies or American studies.** Course Description What does it mean to be nonreligious in the United States today? There has been a rapid rise in those who identify as nonreligious over the past 30 years, and atheists, agnostics, and other “Nones” now comprise over 20% of the U.S. population. What are the various types of nonreligious identities and reasons for being nonreligious in the U.S. context? How do nonreligious individuals organize into groups oriented toward identity-formation, social connection, and political action? What are Americans' attitudes toward atheists, atheism, and non-belief, and are these attitudes changing? This course will promote a critical examination of the changing landscape of religious nonbelief in the United States, placing contemporary American atheism, agnosticism, and humanism in sociological and historical context. Throughout the course, we will focus on the varieties of religious and non-religious experience and engage with sociological debates about secularization in the late-modern context. Learning Outcomes 1. Demonstrate an understanding of the causes and consequences of increased religious disaffiliation in the United States. 2. Pete Stark (D-CA) has agreed to prove a video testimonial at the Reason Rally, March 24, 2012 on the National Mall in Washington, DC. Stark is the first openly atheist member of Congress, as announced by the Secular Coalition for America (SCA). Stark acknowledged that he is an atheist in response to an SCA questionnaire sent to public officials in January 2007. During that same year he reaffirmed that he is an atheist by making a public announcement in front of the Humanist Chaplaincy at Harvard, the Harvard Law School Heathen Society, and various other atheist, agnostic, secular, humanist, and nonreligious groups. The American Humanist Association (AHA) named him their 2008 Humanist of the Year, and he now serves on the AHA Advisory Board. “Unfortunately he can’t make it personally but this endorsement from Mr. Stark is a great addition to the Reason Rally,” organizer and chair David Silverman said. The Reason Rally, a nationwide celebration sponsored by the top secular organizations in the United States, will be held from 10 AM to 5 PM. With the intent to unify, energize, and embolden secular people nationwide, the Reason Rally is a FREE event that will combat negative stereotypes about nonreligious Americans. It is slated to be the largest secular event in World history. Leaders of the secular movement, including a FREE concert by Bad Religion, will fill the rally with music, comedy and reason. -

The Faith of the Unbeliever
The faith of the unbeliever From time to time we get the impression that our freewheeling Western world is being flooded by a new wave of apostasy. That impression is not quite correct. In reality, that apostasy has become a broad stream, moving unceasingly forward and widening constantly. Sometimes there is a turbulence of sorts in this stream, when the conflict between the Christian faith and unbelief suddenly flares up. This is the case, for example, when it is suggested that the Christians' practice of discriminating against non-Christians, solely because they do not abide by the law of God, should be forbidden. Thus a church may not dismiss a functionary because he is a practicing homosexual, for example. This is also the case when Christians are accused of being undemocratic because they ascribe authority to the Bible. In such cases the mass media can be invoked to stage a sharp confrontation, and the amusement industry is usually ready and willing to be mobilized in an effort to ridicule those foolish Christ-believers. Hatred of the Christian faith is not uncommon in our present society. Appreciation But, you may protest, it is not really that bad, is it? So what if there are some misplaced jokes, if there is a complete misunderstanding of what we are all about. Isn't there also appreciation? Appreciation of faithfulness, reliability, hard work... What, essentially, is the faith of the unbeliever? Unbelievers are people who believe that they can get by well, if not better, without the assumption that what believers call "their God" really exists. -

Scholars firmly believed that religion would play an increasingly marginal political and social role in modern societies. However, the global resurgence of religions and their politicization since the 1980s led to sudden conversions. Many argued that secularization had nothing to do with Western modernity but only with religious market conditions. Presently, scholars hotly debate whether we witness secularization or a resurgence of religion. In my view, we are witnessing both: secularization and the resurgence of religion, and we should analyze them not as contradictions but as interrelated processes. In order to do so, we should revisit two basic concepts: religion and secularization. We need to break down the mega-concept of secularization into empirically observable trends and conceptualize religion in a way that helps explaining its resurgence. -

IS “NONTHEIST QUAKERISM” A CONTRADICTION OF TERMS? Paul anderson s the term “Nontheist Friends” a contradiction of terms? On one Ihand, Friends have been free-thinking and open theologically, so liberal Friends have tended to welcome almost any nonconventional trend among their members. As a result, atheists and nontheists have felt a welcome among them, and some Friends in Britain and Friends General Conference have recently explored alternatives to theism. On the other hand, what does it mean to be a “Quaker”—even among liberal Friends? Can an atheist claim with integrity to be a “birthright Friend” if one has abandoned faith in the God, when the historic heart and soul of the Quaker movement has diminished all else in service to a dynamic relationship with the Living God? And, can a true nontheist claim to be a “convinced Friend” if one declares being unconvinced of God’s truth? On the surface it appears that one cannot have it both ways. -

Another resource, the evangelical-authored World Christian Encyclopedia, tabulates national census data on religion, though faith communities' official membership statistics are sometimes contradicted by surveys designed to cap- ture actual opinions among church members. The twentieth century can be seen as a grand culture war, a vast, historically unique societal experiment in which agnostics, absolute atheists, and other nonreli- gious ballooned to about one billion, a sixth of the world's population. Driven largely by conversion of believers, this vast expansion in unbelief-a multi-hun- dredfold upsurge in absolute numbers, and a fiftyfold increase in percentage of population in one long life span-far outstrips the growth of any major faith in the twentieth century, and probably.in history. Current Situation. Believers in the supernatural belong to some ten thousand significant sects, most aligned within ten major organized religions. Chris- tianity's percentage of the population has remained stag- nant overall, at about one in three. Christians are divided among some thirty-four thousand denominations, one of which-Roman Catholicism-claims almost half of all Christians. Most demographic losses among Christians represent conversions to nontheism rather than to any of the other major religions. Transgender and Gender-Nonconforming Voting Rights After Bostock
UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA JOURNAL OF LAW ANDSOCIAL CHANGE Volume 24, Number 3 2021 TRANSGENDER AND GENDER-NONCONFORMING VOTING RIGHTS AFTER BOSTOCK BY MICHAEL MILOV-CORDOBA* & ALI STACK** Abstract. In Bostock v. Clayton County, the Supreme Court issued a landmark holding that allowed workplace protections for the LGBTQ+ community, including transgender people, to be subsumed into the Title VII provision prohibiting “sex” discrimination. Though Bostock was a Title VII case, the textualist logic of the majority opinion has important constitutional implications. In this article, we use Bostock as a point of departure to lay out two novel constitutional theories that further the voting rights of transgender and gender-nonconforming voters. Under our first theory, we argue that because Title VII and the Nineteenth Amendment have almost identical language, the underlying logic of Bostock should govern modern interpretations of the Nineteenth Amendment, meaning that the Amendment’s protections should extend to transgender and gender-nonconforming voters. Because the Nineteenth Amendment should be treated as an analogue to the Fifteenth Amendment, voting regulations that uniquely burden transgender and gender-nonconforming voters should be regarded as per se unconstitutional under the Nineteenth Amendment. Under our second theory, we argue that Bostock provides a stepping stone to elevate the standard of review for gender- based as-applied challenges to voting regulations that implicate gender classifications under the Fourteenth Amendment from Anderson-Burdick review to intermediate scrutiny. This article proposes that both theories offer opportunities to better address the barriers posed by the layering of voter ID laws on top of strict identity document requirements that transgender and gender non-confirming voters face at the ballot box.
