    IUPUI Staff Council News Volume 1, Issue 25 November 7, 2008 Staff Council Fine Arts and Crafts Fair Handmade treasures for sale on Nov. 22 Indianapolis, Indiana – The IUPUI Staff Council will host its first Fine Arts and Crafts Fair on Saturday, November 22, 2008, in the IUPUI Campus Center, located on the southwest corner of Michigan Street and University Boulevard. Visitors can choose holiday gifts and one-of-a-kind handmade items offered by more than 40 crafters and artisans from around the state. Each vendor has been hand-selected from a team of jurors from the Staff Council committee to ensure quality items are featured. Items for sale include clothing, glass art, jewelry, purses, original artwork, floral arrangements, woodcrafts, pottery, stained glass, candles, and seasonal decorations for the home and yard. There will be free demonstrations by various crafters throughout the day. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., November 22. Admission to the fair is free of charge and open to the public. Parking is available in the Vermont Street garage adjacent to the Campus Center and discount parking vouchers will be given at the door. Show co-chair, Melanie Curfman promises “door prizes and a fun shopping experience.” Curfman says that the Campus Center will offer a variety of dining choices throughout the day including Caribou Coffee, Mondo Subs and Outtakes. Starbucks, located in the Barnes and Noble Bookstore of the Campus Center, will also offer an assortment of beverages and food options.     Phi Beta Kappa Oration Franklin & Marshall College, May 11, 2018 Sean Flaherty, Theta of Pennsylvania, ’73 One of my favorite Saturday morning pastimes is solving the New York Times crossword puzzle. Now, since the title of my talk is "Standing for Truth in an Age of Fakery," I feel obliged to admit that I'm not always successful, but I like to give it a go … after all, they say that working out puzzles can help to stave off cognitive decline as one ages…ask me in twenty years… or maybe we should make that ask me in two years! Anyway, in the puzzle of Saturday before last, the clue for number 1-across, a nine- letter word, read as follows: "Like a world in which objective facts are less important than appeals to emotion and personal belief." I didn't get the answer right away, but I had yet to enter any cross-fill for the 'downs', and there were some clever and helpful clues to be considered; here are a couple I particularly enjoyed… clue (9 down): "Like Swiss vis-à-vis other cheeses"; answer: holier, the first letter of which, h, give me the final letter of the word I was still seeking, while at the same time revealing its penultimate letter as most likely a t or an s another clue (6 down): "More familiar name for Enrico Rizzo in an Oscar- winning film"; answer: Ratso (have you seen Midnight Cowboy? …it's a good one…check it out!) After a bit more work on the ‘downs’--do you know what a “tosspot” is?--I was able to fill in the answer to number 1-across as P-O-S-T-T-R-U-T-H, post-truth.
