We are all in the business of selling illusions, as we move various products—including our own sexuality—but we often stand accused of selling out. Blamed for participating in the exploitation of women, these women and their stories, like mine, are always much more complicated…nothing is ever so clear cut.1 -T. Denean Sharpley-Whiting Introduction In 2005, Karrine Steffans’ memoir Confessions of a Video Vixen debuted on bookstore shelves across the country. Steffans book was the first of its kind. She used her knowledge of privileged information contained inside the “Good Ol’ Boys Club” of hip- hop to transform herself from video vixen to a self-proclaimed “modern day Mata Hari.”2 With the publication of her book, Steffans violated an unspoken but well-known rule in hip-hop by “refusing to curb her tongue.”3 She aired her rendezvous with some of hip- hop’s power players, and she did not spare any details. -

THE IMAGE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN AS PRESENTED BY AMERICAN MASS MEDIA AND POPULAR CULTURE: INTERPRETATIONS BY URBAN AFRICAN AMERICAN ADOLESCENT FEMALES REGARDING THEIR LIFE CHANCES, LIFE CHOICES, AND SELF-ESTEEM By Pamela Rose Smith A DISSERTATION Submitted to Michigan State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Sociology - Doctor of Philosophy 2014 ABSTRACT THE IMAGE OF AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN AS PRESENTED BY AMERICAN MASS MEDIA AND POPULAR CULTURE: INTERPRETATIONS BY URBAN AFRICAN AMERICAN ADOLESCENT FEMALES REGARDING THEIR LIFE CHANCES, LIFE CHOICES, AND SELF-ESTEEM By Pamela Rose Smith The aim of this study was to investigate the image of African American women in popular culture and gain an understanding of how those images are interpreted by urban African American adolescent girls (N=40) between the ages of 13-19 years old. Black magazine covers and hip-hop/rap music videos that display images of African American women were viewed by the participants. Questions were asked of the girls that explored whether popular culture media images of African American women affect the interpretation of their self-esteem, choices they make, and future chances in life. Specifically, I sought to understand: 1) Do images of African American women shown in popular culture influence the interpretation of life chances and life choices of urban African American adolescent girls, and if so, how?; and 2) Whether portrayals of African American women in popular culture influence the interpretation of the self-esteem of urban African American adolescent girls. A mixed method research process was used to gather data that represents the participants’ perspectives. -

Jackson II, Ph.D. and Omotayo Banjo Adesagba Ph.D. Abstract This study explores viewers’ perceptions after heavy exposure to VH1’s reality show franchise Love and Hip-Hop. Specifically the investigation seeks to understand how heavy viewership influences 1Black female college students’ view of male/female romantic relationships in their everyday lives as well as their understanding of the Black female image portrayed on the show. The researcher conducted 6 one on one interviews and coded each for emergent themes using the constant comparison technique. Cultivation Theory and Black Feminist Theory guided this study and the researcher’s analysis of the six participants’ responses. This study serves as an analysis of how media messages influence a specific target audience’s image of themselves and their relationship goals. 1 For the purposes of this study the term "African American" is used to identify those Americans, who are descendants of Africa. Looking Forward to the Past: Black Women's Sexual Agency in ‘Neo’ Cultural Productions Sydney Fonteyn Lewis A dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy University of Washington 2012 Reading Committee: Katherine Cummings, Chair Chandan Reddy Habiba Ibrahim Program Authorized to Offer Degree: Department of English University of Washington Abstract Looking Forward to the Past: Black Women's Sexual Agency in ‘Neo’ Cultural Productions Sydney Fonteyn Lewis Chair of the Supervisory Committee: Associate Professor, Katherine Cummings Department of English This dissertation combines critical black feminisms, cultural studies, performance studies, and queer theory with readings of African-American cultural productions in order to consider how black women can and have reconfigured their non-heteronormative sexualities outside of the language given to us by white-dominated GLBT scholarship. The emphasis on “neo” cultural productions, that is projects that look toward the past to re-imagine a new future, speaks to Laura Alexandra Harris’s assertion that a queer black feminist methodology necessitates reclamation of one’s history and an affirmation of desire as a form of resistance to shame. This dissertation reads black female bodies as subversive. In embracing their bodies as pleasurable, these unruly women resist racist and heterosexist hegemonic discourses which silence or pathologize black female sexuality and negate black women’s agency. Chapter One looks toward Barbara Smith’s 1977 publication, “Toward a Black Feminist Criticism,” as an inaugural point for thinking about black female sexuality outside of normative and pathologizing paradigms. It argues for a reading of Sula as a queer black femme novel, and from there develops a (neo) theory of black femme-inism which is indebted to and departs from Smith. -
