Essential Toto Essential Toto I became a hardcore fan of Toto in 1988 when Pamela came out.I was in Jr. High and to me at the time that was the coolest song released that year.I soon discovered that I enjoyed a lot of their older songs too and began collecting all the standard Toto albums. I then joined the fan club and bought two Toto shirts I wore so much people started to call me Toto. Why am I telling you all this... well I wanted you to know my background to put my review into perspective.I am no longer that hardcore fan I was back in the day but I still enjoy certain albums (my favorite being their 2006 release Falling In Between check it out).I now consider only 4 CDs essential because honestly I don't think most of their albums have held up well over time.I am going to spilt this review into two section. One for the casual fan (which this CD is intended for) and one for the diehard fan (which I used to be one): CASUAL FAN REVIEW: If you are looking up this album you are probably a fan of one or two of Toto's hits. This CD may be for you.It has all the major hits and the best thing is they are all beautifully remastered and they have never sounded any better then they do here. There are also a number of album tracks to give you a feel for some of the other songs that Toto has done over the years and you get a sampler of almost all the albums that Sony has the rights to release in the US.If you aren't as big of a fan of Toto's rock hits like Hold the Line buy the CD TOTO: Love Songs. That too is remastered and contains one of the bands best songs that never was released in the US as a single I Will Remember.Personally I would recomend both Essential and Love Songs even though there is a lot of the same songs because both these collection, with little exceptions, together have most of the essential Toto songs. Also avoid collections like Super Hits which to the best of my knowledge are not remastered. TO THE HARD CORE FANS: Many of you have pointed out that this is not a 2 CD collection like what is available overseas. There is a very good reason for that...Toto hasn't been a huge hit in the US since I would say 1986 but they continued to have success in Europe.Sony made a wise decsion by not releasing it in two disks which would shoot the cost up.Considering that the casual fan in the US would not need a two disk set since only the really hardcore fan or music collector would even have any knowledge of a lot of the extra stuff on the 2 disk set.I would also argue that the 2 disk set is padded with some unnessesary tracks including some newer songs from Past to Present where I believe even the band members would like to see those songs go away.If you want converts to the Toto fan base THIS set is a good way to start. It is affordable and it does give a decent overview of Toto's later work.So in my opinion you should give this collection some slack.By giving this poor reviews because your personal favorite song is not on here you have made this album star wise look less favorable to a casual fan. I am giving this 5 stars even though one or two of my personal favorites aren't here because this CD does what is supposed to do... provide a best of and quick over view of the bands work. Also the remastering makes this, Love Songs, and Falling in Between the only Toto CDs I listen to on a regular basis. The 1970's and 1980's ereally was the era of guilty pleasures. I say that because they are still enjoyable today simply as a much as they were back then. Yet, with acts like R.E.O. Speedwagon, Journey, and Foreigner, there are very few that haven't been shown with a decent recognition in greatest hits. Arguably, Toto is just one of those acts that have not had a definitive collection. For a group of studio musicians that have made great pop gems awhile ago, they are still just as enjoyable now as the much as the 1980's. Hopefully this generation who happens tpo be interested in acts like Britney Spears, and Jennifer Lopez can consider enjoying this collection of songs. The Essential Toto is a single disc collection of the groups biggest tracks from the 70's and 80's. While there have been budget collection of Toto and their music, this is their first major definitive collection in almost fifteen years. Each songs sounds much better than it was back then. There are just so many guilty pleasures that are highlighted here on this collection like Africa, I Won't Hold You Back, the soulful I'll Be Over You, 99, Rosanna, and Hold The Line to just name a few. This is a delightful retrospective for new listeners, but die hard Toto fans might arguably feel a bit dissapointed that classics like Hollyanna, Stranger In Town, and Til The End could've also been highlighted here on this collection as well. While The Essential Toto doesn't seem as definitive for hard core Toto fans, they just might want to consider this package as well as their 2003 love songs album as well. But for anybody who enjoys Toto but doesn't have a album or recording of the guilty pleasures, this would be a fairly well put collection for anybody that won't hold you back. Album Cover: A Songs: B+ Price: A- Mastering: B+ Overall: B- I give up. I have come to the conclusion that there is simply no Toto collection out there that does the job right. On the advice of another reviewer, I bit the bullet and purchased the two-disc ESSENTIAL TOTO collection available from the UK, but imagine my dismay when I received the set and checked out the track listing only to discover that Rosanna, Hold the Line, Pamela, and several other key tracks were EDITS! I ran into this same problem with another Toto collection I purchased a while back (GREATEST HITS & MORE, also referred to as GREATEST HITS + 8 here on ). What really gets me is the fact that the songs I listed above appear in their full-length version on the domestic ESSENTIAL TOTO (which is the one listed here). Why in the world they were edited on the UK release is beyond me. At this point I simply refuse to spend any more $$$ on another Toto collection. I will keep my two-disc UK ESSENTIAL TOTO and my two-disc Swedish HOLD THE LINE: THE VERY BEST OF TOTO (both of which have excellent sound quality), and from those collections I'll simply compile my own darn BEST OF. I figure if the record companies can't do it right, then I'll just do it myself, thank you very much. See all 84 customer reviews... Primary support was provided by the EU projects FP6-507142 SIMAC http://www.semanticaudio.org. iii iv Abstract The complexity of music is one of the less intensively researched areas in music information retrieval so far. Although very interesting findings have been reported over the years, there is a lack of a unified approach to the matter. Relevant publications mostly concentrate on single aspects only and are scattered across different disciplines. Especially an automated estimation based on the audio material itself has hardly been addressed in the past. However, it is not only an interesting and challenging topic, it also allows for very practical applications. The motivation for the presented research lies in the enhancement of human interaction with digital music collections. As we will discuss, there is a variety of tasks to be considered, such as collection visualization, play-list generation, or the automatic recommendation of music. While this thesis doesn’t deal with any of these problems in deep detail it aims to provide a useful contribution to their solution in form of a set of music complexity descriptors.

wag (n): 1. ‘Any one ludicrously mischievous; a merry droll’; a habitual joker. 2. A web-based literary magazine (from portmanteau of “web mag” or “web magazine”). revue (n): 1. An elaborate musical show consisting of numerous unrelated scenes; also, the genre of such entertainments. It’s a familiar comparison: the pioneering switch-circuit supernerds of ARPANET; the trailblazing explorers of Usenet and Mosaic; the waves of immigrants, establishing Geocities, getting to know their AOL postman by his ubiquitous catchphrase. Now Google’s twelve- lane freeways roar across the Web, Facebook and YouTube are visible from space. Unfortunately, as with most frontiers, the development of the Web has brought with it the swift and ruthless execution of native populations. The old empires of printed media are undergoing a greater crisis than ever before, one from which they will never fully recover. They have succumbed to the pox of internet expansion. These wrongs must be redressed, not by retrenching ourselves in the printed medium, but by salvaging what its best citizens stood for. We cannot mistake the decline of the printed form for the death of quality writing and content. The need for literature and letters to be reliably and intelligently disseminated exists now as it always has.

Designed and built in-house by our staff of engineers, this robotic “Drum Machine,” called the Gluing Gantry, ensures that every Evans head has a true collar. A series of vacuum fixtures holds the film in place for each head while the robotic gluing arm circles above the hoop and dispenses epoxy. The result is a drumhead that tunes both easily and consistently. At Evans, we do it right the first time. And every time. Check out what Peter Erskine has to say about Evans drumheads at www.evansdrumheads.com PO Box 290 • Farmingdale, NY 11735 We’ve been making the world’s finest sticks for years. And experience tells us that there are no shortcuts when it comes to making a stick. There is, however a very good short- cut when choosing one. The journey from wooden dowel to finished drumstick is a tough one. Each stick makes its way through the hands of several craftsmen before it leaves us. And at every test, there’s always the chance of getting turned into firewood. But it does get easier when our sticks reach the store. Because once you feel a pair in your hands, you’ll appreciate the time it spent in ours.

  • TOTO Bio (PDF)
TOTO Bio Few ensembles in the history of recorded music have individually or collectively had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. As individuals, the band members’ imprint can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a HALF A BILLION albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with 225 Grammy nominations. Band members were South Park characters, while Family Guy did an entire episode on the band's hit "Africa." As a band, TOTO sold 35 million albums, and today continue to be a worldwide arena draw staging standing room only events across the globe. They are pop culture, and are one of the few 70s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles, and 35 years in to a career enjoy a multi-generational fan base. It is not an exaggeration to estimate that 95% of the world's population has heard a performance by a member of TOTO. The list of those they individually collaborated with reads like a who's who of Rock & Roll Hall of Famers, alongside the biggest names in music. The band took a page from their heroes The Beatles playbook and created a collective that features multiple singers, songwriters, producers, and multi-instrumentalists. Guitarist Steve Lukather aka Luke has performed on 2000 albums, with artists across the musical spectrum that include Michael Jackson, Roger Waters, Miles Davis, Joe Satriani, Steve Vai, Rod Stewart, Jeff Beck, Don Henley, Alice Cooper, Cheap Trick and many more. His solo career encompasses a catalog of ten albums and multiple DVDs that collectively encompass sales exceeding 500,000 copies.

  • The Roots Report: Toto at Twin River
The Roots Report: Toto at Twin River Okee dokee folks… I went to Twin River in Lincoln the other night to check out the band Toto. There was a nearly full house in attendance and from the looks of the array of Toto t-shirts I saw folks wearing, a lot of big fans. I cannot be counted as a big fan. I am a casual listener, but I do enjoy a few of their songs. The lights went down right at 8pm and the backing band members took the stage and rocked a bit before the actual members of Toto — Steve Lukathar, David Paich, Steve Porcaro and Joseph Williams — arrived on stage. They launched into the song, “Only The Children.” Surprisingly, the second song was their debut hit “Hold The Line.” That brought the audience to their feet and they sang along encouraged by lead singer, Joseph Williams. They played three more songs, “Afraid of Love,” “Lovers in the Night” and “Pamela” before I recognized the “lite rock” favorite “I’ll Be Over You.” Williams encouraged fans to light up their phones and wave them in the air. The next song, “Chinatown,” was introduced as originally being written for the Toto I album, but over the years it was re-written and rearranged for the Toto XIV album. They talked about a recently discovered video that they came across of the band performing in Montreux and it inspired them to perform their version of Jimi Hendrix’s “Red House.” This featured a fiery guitar solo by Steve Lukathar. They introduced the band at this point, Lenny Castro (percussion), Warren Ham (saxophone), Shannon Forres (drums) and Shem von Schroeck (bass).

Toto – 40 Tours Around The Sun (66:42, 63:16, 02:21:00; 2 CD, 1 DVD, Universal/Eagle Vision, 2019) Was hört der Prog-Fan, der was auf sich hält, nur allenfalls heimlich im Keller? Richtig, Toto. Für diese Antwort bekäme man bei Günther Jauch allenfalls 50€. Toto ist die meist gehasste Band in der Prog-Community. Das steht wohl außer Zweifel. Warum eigentlich?
