138TH ANNUAL COMMENCEMENT MAY 10, 2014 The University Charter The origins of Southern Illinois University Carbondale date to “An Act to Establish and Maintain the Southern Illinois Normal University” approved by the Illinois General Assembly on March 9, 1869. The Act defined the new university’s purpose as “to qualify teachers for the common schools of this state by imparting instruction in the art of teaching in all branches of study which pertain to a common school education in the elements of the natural sciences including agricultural chemistry, animal and vegetable physiology, in the fundamental laws of the United States and of the State of Illinois in regard to the rights and duties of citizens and such other studies as the board of education may from time to time prescribe.” It included provisions for appointment of a Board of Trustees. One of the Board’s first orders of business under the act would be to “advertise for proposals from localities desiring to secure the location of said Normal University.” The Act required the Board to “locate the institution at such point, as shall, all things considered, offer the most advantageous conditions. The land shall be selected south of the Railroad, or within six miles north of said road, passing from St. Louis to Terre Haute known as the Alton and Terre Haute railroad, with a view of obtaining a good supply of water and other conveniences for the use of the institution.” The Act defines how buildings would be constructed as well as procedures for selecting students. It assigned a budget of $75,000 for construction of buildings and for furnishings.

She served as the first Social Secretary for First Lady Nancy Reagan (1981-1984). A member of an American family descended from passengers on the Mayflower, Cabot grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, attended various boarding schools, and graduated from Smith College. Her father, Richard Hobart, was an art collector and an investment banker with Loomis Sayles. Her mother, Janet Elliott Wulsin, was a former explorer who undertook several National Geographic Society-financed expeditions to Tibet and Outer Mongolia. Cabot's first husband was Eric Wentworth, a correspondent for The Washington Post. The couple divorced in 1964. After the divorce, Cabot remained in residence at the pair's Embassy Row home now known as Whitehaven. In 1970 she married British national Henry Brandon, a longtime Washington correspondent for The Sunday Times once known as "the most powerful foreign correspondent in the USA". During this period the couple were known for hosting parties that were the highlight of the Washington social scene. Despite being a lifelong Democrat and a personal friend of the Kennedy family, she was appointed social secretary to fellow Smith College alumna Nancy Reagan in 1981.

2019 Annual Report From our Executive Director Dear Good+Foundation Supporter, Ten years ago, Good+Foundation expanded beyond a focus on mothers and children to include uplifting fathers as a key pillar of our work. In March of 2019, Good+ amended its mission statement to reflect this evolution: Founded in 2001, Good+Foundation is a leading national nonprofit that works to dismantle multi-generational poverty by pairing tangible goods with innovative services for low-income fathers, mothers and caregivers, creating an upward trajectory for the whole family. Good+ raised over $10.6 million in 2019 through a combination of financial and in-kind donations, the highest in our organization’s nineteen-year history. Evolving our mission and raising record revenue afforded Good+ the opportunity to invest in father engagement-specific technical assistance and training for our grantee partners. 2019 was our first year with a focus on training; Good+ provided father inclusion training to 1,235 new social workers through the Los Angeles Department of Child & Family Services (DCFS) Academy, totaling 7,142 hours. In both New York and Los Angeles, Good+ trained an additional 187 program leaders, totaling 545 hours. Good+ also began offering mental health/trauma-informed care training to our grantee partners on both coasts in 2019, for a total of 120 hours of training. In 2019, Good+ expanded our capacity to measure the impact of engaging fathers. At the beginning of 2019, only half of our partners that traditionally focused on mothers and children had even been tracking fathers. By the end of the year, 100% of programs were tracking father engagement.
