    SYMBOLS OF CHANGE MINORITY TENNIS – A HISTORICAL PERSPECTIVE By Bob Davis PART I THE BEGINNING Slavery was abolished in the United States in 1865. Nearly 15 years later, in 1880, the United States Lawn Tennis Association (USLTA) was founded (The name was later changed to USTA). Tennis was the dominion of the white, upper class and Blacks were neither interested, nor invited to participate. Segregation was rampant throughout America and an attitude of exclusion was pervasive in most areas of American society. Blacks began to surface on tennis courts in about 1890 at Tuskegee Institute. Booker T. Washington, one of America’s great, black visionaries and leaders, founded Tuskegee. In his famous Atlanta Address of 1895, Booker T. Washington set forth the motivating spirit behind Tuskegee Institute. In a post Reconstruction era marked by growing segregation and disfranchisement of blacks, this spirit was based on what realistically might be achieved in that time and place. "The opportunity to earn a dollar in a factory just now," he observed, "is worth infinitely more than the opportunity to spend a dollar in an opera house." Because of Washington's extraordinary ability to work within the system and to maximize the possible, Tuskegee flourished to the extent only dreamed about when he met his first students on July 4, 1881. By 1898, Blacks began to have inter-club matches with rival black clubs in New York, Philadelphia and a variety of other eastern seaboard cities. These inter-club rivalries were primarily networking opportunities; occasions for the black, college-graduated elite to commune with their colleagues from other cities.

Many of the best NCAA Men's college teams in the country are expected to compete, including Pepperdine University, Stanford University, UCLA, USC, UC Berkeley, Rice University, Boston College, Villanova University, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps College and Fresno State University, plus local teams from San Diego State University, University of San Diego and University of California, San Diego. Also entering this tournament will be top teaching pros, promising juniors, college coaches and even former tour players, making this one of the most interesting and unusual competitor fields in the country. La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club welcomes tennis spectators to view the tournament with free admission; however there is a nominal fee for on-site parking. Named “Club of the Year” for 2011 by the San Diego District Tennis Association and one of the “Top 50 Tennis Resorts in the World” by Tennis Resorts Online, the La Jolla Beach & Tennis Club's reputation as a top tennis destination started when it attracted its first major tournament – the Pacific Coast Men's Doubles Championship in 1942.

You want the good memories or the bad memories?” Heather LeRoux: “Anything you want to share, anything you are comfortable sharing. Yeah, anything you want.” Lutaf: “Good memories I had was that Uganda was so beautiful, the weather was fantastic. I used to play a lot of cricket and tennis and every time it rained or something, after a few hours, one and a half hours, bright sunshine, everything is dry and nice. That’s one memory I had. The other memory I had was when I was in school and I was a young teenager, we had a canteen at the school but the canteen didn’t provide any good food for us so we used to sneak out. There used to be a shop, a small restaurant, and they used to have cassava. Cassava is a staple food in Uganda, cassava and green banana. This guy used to make this cassava, fried cassava. So we used to sneak out and go and eat that. I remember the first time we saw a bottle of Coke, it was a big bottle, they called it Hostess. We used to chip in our five cents each and buy that and buy a bunch of cassava fries and go and eat that and enjoy it. The other memory I had was—I don’t remember the exact year, but it was 1958 or 1959. I was a good tennis player at school so I was picked by the school to go and get a bit of coaching.
