Police Get Velocity

The police of Aruba have introduced a new traffic | device. The device is one that will not be readily seen, and when it is, chances are the driver will have already activated and passed the road-surface instrument. For all that can be seen are two thin, gray strips of tubing extended across the road. Though small, they accurately register the speed of cars passing over them. The two strips are tiny air hoses spaced exactly ten meters, ten centimeters apart. The hoses make contact with an electric current at the road’s edge. A car passing over the tubes sets off and stops an impulse that registers the time the car travelled the distance between the tubes in hundredths of seconds. The time corresponds to kilometers an hour, which immediately gives the attending policeman the car’s speed. aise The policeman — one of the unit’s advantages is that one officer can handle the entire traffic operation stations himself beyond the tubes at whatever distance he deems necessary to control traffic. It can be as far away as 200 meters. Normally, and for Aruba operation it will be 100 meters. The officer need not be at roadside, he can be away from the road as long as it remains in full view. The line that carries the electric impulse connects the hoses to the meter. The meter, which looks and acts much like the odometer on a car, is held by the policeman. The control] device is called a Gatsometer. Its name is derived from the inventor’s, Gatsoneter. One of Holland's foremost racing drivers he constantly sought an accurate means of timing his racing cars. His invention now not only times racing cars but also passenger cars that shouldn’t be racing. As emphasized by Police Commissioner C.
