This win over their neighbours Kilfua"c W~IS" milestone in the hisloryofToomcvaril hurling and it will also help prolong a remarkable career for Phil Shanahan as history would show over the next decade or so. Phil Shanahan who now resides in Cion mel first came 10 prominence when he helped Tipperary win il Munster rninorchampionship over Cork in \946. He soored a winning goal that day and he would laler figure in the A11- Ireland minor fin •• 1 when Tipp lo~t to Dublin. This final might be beneT known for the Billy O'Brien (RIP) goalmoUlh incident. In the !>arne year he played his part in helping Toome win theirelghteemh North final in seni or hurling and three years hlter he was ilt midfield in help ing Tipp to a historic three-in-a-row in 1941}-·SI. It waS:l fining tribute toa man who had captained it losing si de one year earlier when Toome lost 10 Nenagh in Ihe final. Later Phil would play in three county finals in 19SH-·61. There was no success there despite having players of great stllture playing there at the time. Phil Shitnahan retired from competitive hurling in '66. 21 1959 NORTH T1PP S.H. FINAL: Kilruane McDonagh shock Toomevara in senior hurling final

KILRUANE 0-11, TOOMEVARA 1-4

Kilruanc McDonagh created a first class surprise when they defeated Toomcvara. the holders, in a very exciting North Tipperary senior hurling championship final at McDonagh Park. Ncnagh. The final score was: Kil ruane McDonagh (I-I I . Toomcvara 1-4. Toomevara were contesting their third divisional final in succession and were firm favourites to win Sunday's game while Kilruanc. who last won the championship in 1944. had played in four finills si nce then without success. However they had ample revenge for last year's defeat at the hands of the 'Greyhounds' by emerging victorious in this absorbing encounter by a well deserved four points margin and the Kitruane players themselves made no secret of the fact that a big part in their win was played hy their trainer. Mr. John Heenan. Ringroe. himsel f a former McDonagh player who had his charges tuned up to perfection. Conditions were ideal for the game and Kilruane. who played with the ad· vantage of the wind in the first half led by (}"8 to 0 .. 1 for Toomevara at half timc. It was anticipated by the majority of spectalOrs th,lI the 'Greyhounds' would make this traditional sall y after the interval but try as they did they were unable to peg back a great McDonagh team who kept their lead from the start .. nd ran out deserving winncrs of an cnthralling gamc. The absencc of John Hough . who was injured in the closing st.lges of the Roscrea ..Toomcvara game. and W'IS unable to take his place on Sunday was a big blow to thc 'Greyhounds' and no doubt. Toome supporters will argue that had hc been on the team there would have been a different gamc. D. Cuddihy was also a absentee from the Toomcv'lra team and he was missed in the forward line. 32 STAR OF THE PAST: Jimmy Gibson (Kilruane) by Uam Hogan From Ihc years 195210 1966 Jimmy Gibson played in no less than eight North finals winning three ,Ind losing thc remainder, The firsl North final for Jimmy was the 1952 minor final when Kilruanc won their firs t ever til Ie in the grade. This win for hi s parish would signi fy greater things 10 comc for bolh him and hisc1ub. II is said that Jimmy Gibson would have made No 6 his own with thc blue and gold but for thc man in !X'Sition at thc lime which was . His displays for Kilruanc have been talked about by many past and prescnt. He won the first orhis Iwoscnior medals in 1959 when thc Gerry McCarthy-led side gained revenge ovcrToomcvara who had won thc previous ycaragainsl Ihe sa me opposition. In Ihal game he marked Con Ryan who in !Urn was held. scoreless. In Ihe Nenagh Guardian report Gibson was praiscd for his sieriing errorts. This is thallhe reporl said : "II was forlunate for Kilruane thalJimmyGib son who misscd Ihe semi-final against Borrisokane and the game previously against Shannon Rovers owi ng to an inj ury, was able to take his place on Sunday. Gibson played m:my fine games for Kilruane but in Sunday's con lest he attained a new stature by his wonderful defensive play. He was the hero of the McDonagh team and the bulwark on which many a Toome al tack broke down. Time and again when Ihe Greyhounds laid seige to the McDonagh goal Gibson broughlthe ball clear and effected gre,1I clearances to give much needed respite to hi s harassed colleagues. He was excellently supported by his brother Billy and Scan Ryan who shone on ihe Hanks". One year earlier Jimmy Gibson captained Kilruane ,md led them to the North final. His brother Billy played alongside him at wing back. Kilruane losl in thai fi nal. Jimmy Gibson had to endure Ihe agony of playing in two more finals which ended in failure for Kilruane. Both games were against Toome in 1960 and 1962. Perhaps Ihe McDonaghs mighl have won in the laller in a game in which he himself pointed two frees. Kil ruane lost 4-9 to 5-4. However success came at lasl in 1965 . A second North medal for Jimmy afler the white and black defealed Lorrha. As menlioned above Jimmy might have gained many honours with Tip. perary. However he did receive a NHL medal in 1960 as he played against Galway. and Clare in the 1959-'60 campaign. This was after he played in his onl y county final in 1959 against Sarsfields. Hurling was not Jimmy's onl y passion. Ploughing was anolher speciality and as earl y as 1952 in February he won the minor ploughing championship of Ireland. Later in '59 bolh he and his brolher Billy came fi rst and second in the North Tipp ploughing championShip of '59. Jimmy's son Seamus Gibson, former club and county corner back, is now a member of Ihe team's selectors, having retired from oompetitive hurling.

TOOMEVARA 6-13, KI LRUANE4-3

Toomeyara showed marked superiority when winning the North Tipper ary senior hurling final from Kilruane McDonagh at Nenagh and their IOtal scores reOectsthe accuracy of their forw:Jrds and midfield dominance where McDonagh fai led 10 stem the advance of the brothers Hough. John and Gerry. although M, Ryan tried hard but to nOllvail and the lengthy strokes of John gave the Toomc forwards a great se rvice and they took full advan tage of it. Great things were expected of the brothers McCanhy who were promi nent scorers against Roscrea in the semi-final, but this half forward line wa~ held in a grip by the Toome halfbacks. However. the best score of the game was got by D, Williams, a brother of Neill who played a great part in Toomevara'S win. D. Williams Ilroke through the Toome defence to lash home a great goal to the net and gave Mounsey no ch'lOce to retrieve. The first half of the game gave promise of an eYenly contested fin'll. McDonagh settled down to their work in great style but in the first minute of the game Toome were in the lead with a point ,lOd this was soon doubled, but McDonagh we re full of fight and their supporters were cheered by a goal which gave them the lead. and they added a poi nt. but their lead was short lived and a goal to Toome reversed the score to 1-2 to I-I in favour of the Greyhounds. Jimmy Gibson was sterling in defence and together with Dwyer Iheywere still holding the Toome attack. which was being well fed by the midfield pair of John and Gerry Hough. Williilms left the Toome defence stllllding by a great goal 10 reduce the margin 10 three points. and this was the tally when the in terval came. Broken at midfield, the McDona~h defence felt the strain of the Toome pressure and it was not long before Toome had a double lead again and they continued to pile on the -.cores to win hy a big mi.lrgin of 2-111. while McDonagh ~ucceeded in getting ago.ll, As the scores mounted the game de- tcrioratcd and thc spectators were leaving the field tcn minutes before the game ended.
